If like people wrote like the way they like, spoke, then you know like, what age they group they like, might be from. Like, it's way easy to guess that like, they would like technology, but like, they kinda have to like, talk about it first, you know.

lol, nice. It's (unfortunately) true though. I generally don't associate with people who talk like that, however.

Of course I could be wrong about this, I don't know how many INTP teens over use the words like and you know.

You're not too far off on the first part at least. As far as my own experiences are concerned, I don't think too many INTP/J teens talk like that. Probably because it's a hallmark of ignorance (and that they have nothing worthwhile to discuss) and sounds idiotic.

Those words are space fillers, they are used to fill in time so the brain can catch up. It has been said, but is unsubstantiated, that thinking types are more likely to pause without a word to fill in that time space.

I'm of the opinion that if you need to pause to let your brain catch up with your mouth you're either talking too much or not thinking fast enough. Or both. I think people insert 'like' and 'you know' into their speech to subconsciously soften anything they say (like) and assure themselves that the other person understands them (you know).
By saying 'like, -blah-' they're not actually saying '-blah-'. Just something that is 'like -blah-.' Which means that if blah is positive or negative, it's not as powerful as it would be on it's own. That way, if the other person disagrees, they're not so personally invested in the statement. Or, if they agree, it gives the other person the opportunity to agree further with the statement.

Or this is me looking too deeply into things.

Oh, that's why. Thanks for the explanation.

Yes, I do it to soften things, not because my brain is "catching up." Sometimes it takes me a moment to figure out how I am going to words something in order to increase clarity, but I generally just pause when I do that. If I say "like" it is because I don't want to seem more assertive or direct than I really am about what I am expressing. It is, at least somewhat, a sign of submission, and is neither age-related nor intelligence-related in my case.

Ah! the balance of silliness is tipping in our favor (the old and more "mature" folks)!

I.b., may I fling shit at MrJones?

Now now, us INTP's don't tend to partake in that. We're typically found 'checking' the sh*t-slingers.

Uh-oh, perhaps he isn't old enough quite yet. Maybe if we dry him in the sun for several weeks.....

@grey matters - If you think my explanation makes sense, you're free to believe it. I just wrote what I thought was the best answer.

If anyone who says 'like' or 'you know' were to read that, they'd probably say it's false and not know why.

Nice way to say it.

I'm eighteen.

(I pause a lot when I talk too, but I think it's more because I have to concentrate so hard on what I'm saying and making it come out right. I need a little bit of time to get my thoughts into coherent, grammatically-correct sentences before I start talking. I'm not a bloody E, for crying out loud- I can't just spew out whatever pops into my head. ;))

I'm fifteen years old, but if I lived in Venus and had a Gregorian calendar, I'd be twenty-five years old.

I realized that I'll be one hundred years old in Venusian years when I get retired...

Did you mean to say younger looking?

Are we meant to be picturing you as a twelve year old?

Well, I am 20 and some people think I look like 30 and there are others who think I am not older than 16.
Did I mentioned that I am a very confusing personality?

I'm 59. Do I win a prize or what?

My impression has always been that most of the people here are much younger than me.

Decided it didn't matter.

Just as a footnote and not as a "one up:" In newspaper circles I'm an innovator, all this cyber news and text messaging and whatnot most of you younger folks take for granted, and I go here and there to speak or have people from other papers come here. Invariably, if my age wasn't known ahead of time, I hear variations on how they'd expected a younger person. (One hopes one is hearing surprise and not disappointment.) So perhaps the ability to learn and teach new things is something you all have to look forward to as a youthful trait extending into your INTP dotage. :-)

I tell people I'm 59 going on 17.

Yes! That's what I'd like to keep.

I'm 25 and my students keep expecting someone older. The first time I walked into a highschool to apply for a job (that's 4 years ago) people thought I wanted to study there.

It does bug me a little that I'm supposed to be older to teach where I do. As in, I'm not really supposed to be older, but it's expected. I have to quickly establish that I know what I'm doing and saying. At the same time I have to stay flexible and keep away from confrontations. It's a demanding job. Age makes it slightly harder.

i must look pretty young, because i still get carded at some of my usual liquor stores (you'd think they'd know who i am by now).

i think what editorone brings up is a good point. i know a lot of older people (no offense) that just can't seem to keep up with modern advancements, but to me INTP's seem like the perfect people to always be open to progress. the curiosity for new things and the natural flexibility keep us from getting too set in our ways. a lot of people in my extended family are great examples of people who refuse to welcome progress...

This thread is old now, but I`m 30 and just wanted to say I liked what I read from editor_one and some of the others around my age or older, makes me not feel so bad to be so childish! :)

I get taken for 22-24 usually (in person).

I am 13 but very mature for my age I think, I see differences in how I think in just two or three months I was wondering why I am so different from kids my own age so I looked up personality types and found INTP. I come to think of almost everything from, My career plans, Goals, Living location, Sex, Marrage, My religon and my beliefs, The purpose of life, politics, and have come to know myself.

I started playing Grand Theft Auto when I was 8 , watched horror movies etc.
even though I did not understand all of it I still was not effected by any of it.
I can almost never descrbe or completley express my intellect to anyone, or can find nobody my age that s similar to me. I much like to befriend or meet another INTP my age.

17 here~ I feel slightly below average, oh dear. O.O

On relative mental age- when I used to go play games on those sorts of gaming sites where there'd be a chatbox under your virtual checkerboard and whatnot, one women asked my age. Since I didn't want to tell her, I said "I'm a student..." and she replied with, "Still in college, then?" That was four years ago... >> Of course, now people would probably assume I was 13-14 in person... I blame catchy NF enthusiasm. ;)

26, although for some reason I keep forgetting when people ask me and default to 25. Age seems irrelevant once I reached 21.

I guess I never posted in this thread. Hmm.

I'm 23 and look a few years younger but have the presence of someone much older. Or so I've been told.
