Hmm, last I completed was Ninja Gaiden (NES) for nostalgia value as I remember it being too hard to beat as a kid. Usually just play old console simulators and indie games these days.
It's among the most beautiful games graphically on the NES I remember, music & controls are pretty good, and its use of cutscenes was innovative for its time. Otherwise, just a relentless platformer. It is hard but I'd say the only sections I found really challenging were the penultimate level and the final boss. There are very few random elements to the game, so it's largely the case of perfecting the best course through a stage by trial & error and committing it to muscle memory.
Started playing 2 & 3 then just thought 'nah, &%$@ this
