Yes, the huge wave of stereotypes portray an absolute lack of time discipline, the stereotypes make us out to be 'night owls'. I've also read that the majority of us prefer evenings / nighttimes to persue our intellectual challenges.

But what isn't clear, is how many of you suffer from being unable to get to sleep without any kind of medication?

It's just, I can lay in bed for HOURS after settling in, I can be very comfortable and content, yet I'm just completely unable to switch my mind off. It's almost like I spend the first 12 hours of the day with this foggy layer over my periphery, without the assistance of stimulants I am an incredibly lazy and under-performing colleague, fortunately I don't really have official 'working hours', I essentially come as I pllease most of the time, which helps regarding my sleeping problems.

I've done extensive reading on the subject. Apart from being surprised at how little we still know about sleep. it was amazing how many 'techniques' and 'advice articles' I came accross but even then, not of them work. Things like:

- Focusing on your breath. Clearing ideas out of your mind to the best of your abilities.
- Choosing a huge number, like 648, then detracting 3 from that number over and over in my min; 648, 645, 642 etc etc. This actually worked, a little.
- Tried using no electronics for at least an hour before bed.
- Properly dehydrated, no tea/coffe consumed for the hours prior to bed.
- No high energy foods consumed before bed.

The only thing that gets me to sleep is either Diazepam or Zopiclone. I just worry that this will be a long term issue for me and drugs like these aren't meant to be taken long term.

I'm hoping that I'm not alone here, and if you have found methods of switching Ti off whilst in bed then I am MORE than happy to listen and try.

Pure exhaustion.

That's the only thing that works.

So, I'll be up from anywhere to 30 - 40 hours before I finally crash.

Lay off those pills unless you want to be a mongol by the age of 40.

A big bag of weed is a very good substitute.

Nothing like 2 hours of doing your projects for your Master's can't fix.

Nope, I am the exact opposite and a morning person. I usually get up early because I wake up thinking things and can't clear my head to get back to sleep. I have no tricks other than knowing not to waste time thinking about things before bed because there is nothing I can do about it until the next day. I have found that I am fairly adept at passing things off to my unconscious which might explain me waking up early with a bunch or new ideas/answers.

I can't sleep when my life is not how I feel it's supposed to be. I can sleep when it is. Maybe you're taking the wrong approach by trying to "turn off" your thinking. Your mind is shuffling through all kinds of ideas in search of real satisfaction, but (and perhaps because) you're avoiding the thing(s) you really want and need, trying to live according to some outside "ideal" that is not truly your own. Maybe you're trying to please the ghost/impression left in your mind/heart by your parents, who probably didn't know what the fuck they were doing in the first place.

Incredibly apt.

None of those techniques from 'sleep experts' have ever worked for me either.

I have generally accepted the fact that my sleep lives its own life, and that I have to structure my life in a way that allows for that – for example not letting work dictate when you sleep, but letting your sleep pattern dictate which work you do.

Made an account just to share my success with this.
I can only sleep when I work out often. It's the only way I've been able to tire myself out and get out of my head.

I second what AlexER said. The body can often be depleted of stimulating chemicals just by using them all up in strenuous physical activity. The mind can run out of material to work with.

I nap/sleep a lot during the day, mostly due to excessive boredom leading to the need to sleep to "pass time".
I'm up all night till 4-5am and sometimes not sleeping at all.

I'm still able to function well, like attending school and such.
