I've done this since I was a child but didn't realize it until tonight.

I can't call people by their names. Every person I've known for any length of time gets renamed by me and whatever I chose to call them is what they become and eventually answer to. (Even with other people.) If I can't find or create an alternate name for them, then I don't call them anything.

I'm wondering if any one here did something like that when they were younger, or if it is just another one of my delightful eccentricities.

I don't know if I'd call it a 'delightful eccentricity'. Actually, it seems rather insulting, like a king renaming his subjects to suit his own whims.

Names are deeply significant to family and self-identity. Also, people can be rather particular about how they're addressed. Regarding my students, who in this country have two first and another two last names, all with nickname and diminutive variants, I always ask how they prefer to be addressed and then stick to it:

"What is your name?"

"Gerardo Daniel Canseco Romero."

"And which do you prefer that I use?"

"Daniel or Danny, but please don't call me Gerardo, and NEVER call me Lalo!"

The whole idea of using names is clumsy.
It would be more logical to use numbers - then no two would be alike.
We could use our social security numbers.
You could call me “46.” That's my nicknumber. ;)

Whatever I say? Really? I like how you think Joal0503.;)

Solitaire, I would not call it a "delightful eccentricity" either. My sarcasm program has never functioned at 100%. There seems to be a flaw in how it communicates with other beings.

However, I don't claim to be perfect either. Often.

And it may be unoriginal, but can I be Nine? I love that number. (Three threes.) If that fails, I can work with Mahootajamblaman. It sounds like elephants.:elephant:

I'm terrible with names until I become quite close friends with someone. Usually I need some information to associate with that name for me to remember someone's. A visual picture is just not enough.

You mean like way back when I was in my 30s? No, I don't believe so.

Is this because you can't remember names? If so, ditto.

If it's something else Mr. Eight then you should probably stop and call people by the names THEY want you to call them. :)

I once gave a kid in high school an insult nick name. His name was andrew, and for some reason the name spooger popped into my mind. So that's what I called him, and so did the entire school. That name haunted him till he turned 20, and people still know him as spooge. I'm sure his cell mates, in jail don't call him that though. Now that I'm older I feel bad. Turns out his dad committed suicide in front of him after his mom got sent to jail for attempted murder of his father. He did inherit a shit ton of money, but he never really had any real friends.

Other than that time, I've never had a nick name stick. People love turning the nick name that I have been known by (my entire life), into another nick name. I'm still not quite ready to share my name, even my first name, with the forum yet. But people have fun with my name, and so do I. I don't mind being called my real name, but I prefer the name I've known myself by, since ever.

HippoLotamus. Pretty much add ottamus, or asorous, or dactyl, to any name and you got a golden nick name for any one.

I take it you have an easy to make silly last name. In high school I knew this kid named Chris Long. His ex-girlfriend, told us his penis was small, so we called him Chris not-so-Long. People try to pock fun at my last name, but there are only two options for them to go after, so It does very little to offend me.
