Does anyone else think that we are deducting ideas from the MBTI system to prove how we are better than others? It seems like a lot of NT forums equate personality with skill and I think it is fairly annoying when people dont even bother to read up on MBTI, before coming up with these prejudiced claims about certain types being able to do only certain things.

I dont know if this has come up before, since I dont read threads that are specifically about MBTI.

I am not saying that you need to be a researcher to state anything about the MBTI, but people who posts these threads dont seem to base their ideas on anything other than intuition. It wouldnt bother me as much, if we didnt use this to disregard other types. I found the idea that sensor value experience (ESC´s link) very interesting. These are the kinds of ideas that I enjoy reading about.

Yes, but that's what enthusiast groups do, generally.

To be accepted as a Ford Mustang aficionado, you must first denounce the Chevy Camaro.

We are all prejudiced all the time. It's just a matter of choosing what source we decide to be prejudiced from.

Even if we didn't have the mbti, people would still be able to come up with reasons why they are better than others.

It's ridiculous though considering MBTI is supposed to be a tool for understanding..

I agree, I think MBTI is there for you to understand why other people do what they do, not to split us into 16 tribes.

I find differentiation important, but I don't personally - and don't see people here - making the point that they're better than others because of it. Yeah Sensors bug me, I also bug them because I don't go to their parties and when I do I'm no fun. They make much better friends than me, I'm inconstant, flaky and demand more alone than together time.

There was a thread here once about INTP failings, and INTP's dog piled on it pointing out their own flaws.

Yes, we're better than others because we're able to point out our own flaws! :)

I think for the most part people are more concerned about why they prefer their own type to others. There is real prejudice, but there is also connotation neutral discrimination being mis-perceived as prejudice.

I prefer introverts to extroverts; intuitives to sensors; and thinkers to feelers; and judgers to perceivers, but I don't mistake the order of my preferences for actual superiority.

Is MBTI, like your default personality?

Is it good to conform to your default Ti-Ne-Si-Fe, or is trying to be different make you more well rounded?

Rounding your functions is development of those functions you use less. I'm not sure if this extends to the shadow functions or not, though I imagine it does.

I have found that there is more misinformation about type theory available online than there is substantiated information. It's simply the state of things and we'll have to work with it and accept it if we don't want to crazy about it.

A part of it is the Dunning-Kruger effect. People get to know just enough to get involved with it, and then think that they are experts until they run into a wall, at which time they then claim that the theory is generalizations and full of shit.

So in the case of an INTP, Fi would be used the least.

Yes, an INTP that can use their Fi would likely be considered more mature than his less rounded counterpart.

I'm not sure this is the Dunning-Kruger effect, as people that know even a little about type theory know more than the average individual. This misinformation is less genuine unresolvable incompetence than it is mere inexperience. That said, I am no expert on the DK effect.

I think many INTPs find themselves outcasted and ostracised by most other people in real life without a conscious knowledge of MBTI.

At least the MBTI allows INTPs some degree of comfort and acceptance of who they are.

I think many INTPs find themselves outcasted and ostracised by most other people in real life without a conscious knowledge of MBTI.

At least the MBTI allows INTPs some degree of comfort and acceptance of who they are.

This makes since to me. I am new to this form but I just left another INTP forum site and I realized that a lot of the prejudice type INTPs are expressing almost a reverse prejudice because they are themselves very ostracized IRL. Just because they are traditionally loaners that spend a great deal of time in there own head and not relating to other people.

I think that many introverted types can become this way especially if they are only introverted because they are outcasts by the Extroverts of the world.

I have a theory that there are at least two different levels of Introverts.

On one hand you have the introverts that find solace and comfort in there personal time. These people have no real desire to be part of the group or being excepted they just want time to think and get away form all the noise. These are the true introverts and they a few.

On the Other hand you have the Outcasts/Abused or those who believe they have been Outcasts/Abused. These people either don't trust people or they find it painful to be around others who they believe they will hurt them in the end. These type of introvert has far more introverted than even the true introvert because they can't stand to be around other other people.

The problem is some of these Outcasts/Abused Introvert are actually naturally Extrovert people that no long can trust others enough to actually live there life naturally. This causes bitterness and pain. If you have a natural desire to be accepted and loved and you live your life as a outsider off ball you are never really going to be happy. Of course some times you find online sites that have open communication between introverts and than become an outlet for you to retaliate against all the types that outed you IRL.

I myself am of the first type of Introvert. I have no real want to embrace society. I like being on the outside so that I can see everyone else more clearly. I celebrate differences in people because this is what makes them interesting. I may generalize at times for convenice but I don't think of myself as superior to any other type. I feel no bitterness against the world that hasn't truly accepted me because I don't have a need to be accepted by the world. I some times wish I could find a job/career easier but that a different subject all together.

I am sure other functions besides the Introvert function may have something to do with this as well. S's generally don't see eye to eye with N's they have different world views. F's think T's are too anal and T's think F's are to emotional. My biggest pet peves is against J's I don't understand how they can try to simplify subject matter that is so complicated. They generally want the easy simple answer and few things can be answered in such a way. On, the other hand my wife who is a J thanks I am to flaky to survive in the world without her direction. The said truth is she maybe right.

We're not really better so much as the least obsolete at the moment.

Enjoy it while it lasts...

Edit: More on topic - before, I considered the majority of people as simply "stupid". Personality theory has done nothing but teach me tolerance and understanding.

I attribute prejudice to tribal survival. It's good to favor those around us and we tend to associate with those who have common interests and goals and that means those who are most like us.

The trouble is the tribe can't feed us in every way. We need to go outside to vary our input. That means accepting and even welcoming differences. But it also means being cautious. It means being wary of differences. Check them out.
