It's been a long time since I've posted on an internet forum after being a somewhat respected member of a well-known video games forum for some 5 or 6 years. I'm a little rusty.

I'm Tom and I'm 23. I live in the UK in an unspecified very nice middle class town in a flat with my ENFJ girlfriend who I have been with for four years. I have a pretty modest life and a very ordinary office job which I sort of enjoy due to heavy involvement with CRM software. I like to spend a great deal of time alone, composing bizarre pop music and soaking myself in atmospheric games and films. I have very little time for rules, hype, pretentiousness, teenagers and music as a social soundtrack.

I did the Myers Briggs test recently and became a bit obsessed with personality types. Does anyone else think that INTPs are more likely to be interested in the concept of a personality type index than any other types?

Well, what I have written seems a bit disaparate, so...ask me anything?

Welcome!

Having been a teenager, one now despises them?

I understand completely, I am now 57 years old.

BTW- there are numerous teenagers in this forum and some elders with adolescent minds... just so one knows...;)

Welcome to the forum.

Some claim Jung was an INTP, and it makes sense, as abstracting messy human cognition into a rational system (pretty much from the comfort of your armchair) seems like a very INTP thing to do.

I think INTPs are certainly more likely to appreciate it than extroverts, who would rather deal directly with people, and sensors, who don't grasp abstractions as readily. That being said, other introverted intuitives also take interest in the system, especially INFJs.

I suppose that by teenager, you refer to those people who are incapable of intelligent discussion. If I am incorrect in so supposing, do correct me, otherwise, I shall continue my point:

Do not tar all those between the ages of thirteen and twenty (including ages thirteen and twenty, in case you happen to be picky on logic) with the same brush. Even if the vast majority of them are incapable of rational discussion on theoretical topics, in my years, I've met some that can. They congregate at school clubs devoted to the purpose of such discussions, and sometimes compete in regional, state, and national debate competitions; for the engineers among them, entire organizations, like F.I.R.S.T., are devoted to nurturing them into bright minds who will invent the technologies that will power the future.

Indeed, bright teenagers abound.

I... I'm floored. *big, warm bear hugs for you both if you want them* :3

@SpaceYeti No-one believed that I was a teenager at the last forum that I went to until I submitted video proof, and even afterwards, one guy thought that I had a son and had coerced him into pretending to be me; therefore, I find your surprise *puts on sunglasses*... UNSURPRISING! *guitar solo* YEAAAAAH! :D

Apart from my little spiel, *pants, whines, and gives puppy-dog eyes* *wants to play fetch* :)

I second Duxwing's opinion (being a fellow teenager), albeit less eloquently and more smiley :elephant:.

Elephant-riding smiley, that is.

But seriously, I hate stereotyping. Don't do that.

Where do you brains come from and what are you doing on the internet?! Socializing?

Wow that was powerful information to freely divulge I would be slow to spread it around, I mean, unless you really want to. And I don't really hand out unwarranted advice. That was right out of character.

Hi Publius. My hypothesis is that NTPs like how personality type theory gives a model for understanding people and relationships which appeals to introverted thinking and extraverted feeling.

I was going to record myself quickly sucking balls at playing a noodled guitar solo, but it wouldn't be worth the effort just for a stupid joke.

What what?

I mean that first I advised you two not to spread that info around. Not for any reason in particular, just I was surprised you don't keep it hidden.

Then I remembered it's your decision and that I shouldn't spread my advice around.

To save face I'll try and say that's out of character for me. At least I'll try to keep it out of character for Montresor.:beatyou:

Is it true that anarchy in the U.K. equates to denying an offering of a cup of tea?

And I'd imagine the usefullness of systems like the MBTI varies by type and situation. An xSxJ, for example, could use the categorizations to manage people they've categorized via Si.

Thank you for all your replies! Particularly to my provocative point about teenagers. That got the joint jumpin'!:)

I'm really a nice chap and I feel I now have to convince you all of this. I don't hate teenagers, in fact I hate very little. This seems like a very nice, mature community.

thehabitatdoctor - anarchy in the UK is certainly turning down a cup of tea. You would be surprised. If you have a minute, check out https://twitter.com/SoVeryBritish for an amusing account of the quibbles we British folk face every day. We're an overwhelmingly polite society, which both amuses and frustrates me. Your Fool quotation is appropriate there!

Hello Publius. What mean you by "music as a social soundtrack"? There are so many ways to imagine that, and I wonder what aspect is particularly grating.

I wonder if he means garnering nostalgic feelings from popular music as a way to facilitate socialization with others. Maybe he finds it altogether shallow.

Can't tell if
1: elaborate joke implying Snafupants lied to you about his gender.
2: Snafupants is a girl (which would surprise me greatly)
3: Genuinely fell for Snafupants' lie in which case this is hilariously ironic.
4: You're expecting Snafupants to correct you, in which case you have a joke prepared and I've just ruined it.

Please let it be number 4... Maybe I'm just really tired and it'll make sense in the morning.

I don't know if you're trolling, you misunderstood something I said, I misunderstood what you said, or you're just stupid.

My guess is it's a combination of the second and third options.

Your posts are extremely ambiguous, however, so it could also be the first option. Regardless, I don't even care anymore.

Hello Publius. What mean you by "music as a social soundtrack"? There are so many ways to imagine that, and I wonder what aspect is particularly grating.

Interestingly, I was posting in another thread about how I'm a very nostalgic person, especially where music is concerned.

It's difficult to describe. I take music very seriously - a lot more seriously than I perhaps should - and loathe when it is branded and cut down so far that it becomes little more than an excuse for a catchphrase.

Of course in retrospect, it was a terrible facet of my personality to give away in a first post and I really wish I hadn't. I feel all indignant now.

Thank you all for your kind welcomes, by the way. You all seem very engaging.

So it's a reaction based upon perceived sacrilege of something deeply meaningful to the self; the dilution of the personal soundtrack with commercial fashions. Not at all what I thought you might say, but I'm glad it's that, and not a general dislike for the way music underscores our lives.

Not that you need my approval :smiley_emoticons_mr

What I find interesting (and some scholarly type has written about this - I forget who, but it gives me the right words to describe something unsettling, so I plagiarise the expression), is the phenomenon of branding social identity. Humans identified by the type of music (among other things) that they consume, rather than engaged in the experience of creating. ie. music as product and identity as consumer of product rather than music and human identity arising from creative experience.

I've only once had an inkling of what it must be like for gifted people to express themselves through the creation of music, and for those around them to become part of what had the aura of something holy (for want of better word), and therefore become active participant as opposed to being a passive consumer.

I guess your intro indicates you're far from the consumer end of the scale. Sooo...

Indignant? Thou jests? Why is it so terrible to give away such a fact? Will the International Council for the Abasement and Commercial Exploitation of Beauty and Meaning seek you out and ...and... um... umm... do unspeakable things?

You said it a lot better than I did! And yes. Music is not something you put on a t-shirt. Although the band I play in does have badges...every cloud and all that...

I am a music creator but I don't think you have to be to fully understand its value. I know a lot of people that listen to all kinds of music, but don't treat it as a product made for mass consumption, like a new car.

Although I was annoyed recently when I went to see a band I like who happen to be very popular (Foals, anyone?) and they have a really wonderful atmospheric song which I listen to with headphones which makes me feel like I'm curling up and dying in the snow in some sort of bleak art film. And all the kids there...were jumping around and singing along. I didn't get how they weren't getting it. And I spent the evening trying to rationalise why. :( haha

1) Why does it matter whether or not they "get it"?

2) Is the message so unambiguous that there is only one way to enjoy it such that you truly enjoy it and they don't?

3) Is it wrong to enjoy a painting which is masterfully crafted because of the boobies it depicts?

Basically, my point is that whether you enjoy something for a deep or shallow meaning doesn't matter. You enjoy it either way.
