I don't know what an introit is, but this place seems like an introduction space, and so i'll use it for that purpose.

For purposes of not ruining my chance for presidency when my competitors go searching for dirt (which will never happen because i'm too lazy to run for presidency) I'm not going to state my name but I do live in central California.

Lately I've been too engrossed in Ne and have almost become an ENTP but hopefully by heavily reingaging my Ti I can reverse this stuff before it's too late. I blame the problem on an incredibly annoyingly Si I developed myself in which it will randomly call my attention to outside matters and the fact that I AM thinking about what I'm thinking about when I think about it. Perhaps that's not what Si does, but I still blame it on Si regardless. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I reddited for some time but after some time I realized it was just wasting my life, so I deleted the account. In order to fill the gap, my subconscious likely brought me here in order to fill the timewasting.

I freerun, which is parkour but flashier due to flips and tricks mixed into getting around. I can do standing backflips, corkscrews, sideflips, wallflips, and occasionally front flips on flat. Other than that, I don't do anything else.

I've cycled through my fair share of obsessions over time and I'll list some.
Rubix cubes
Smash bros melee
Starcraft 2
Defining universal patterns and principles by which the world functions
I separately devised what is known as prisoner's dilemma before I found the name, after which I applied it everywhere for some time.
Jungian functions and typing everybody, of course.
Other mental obsessions which I now am failing to recall.

I might not stick around here for long. We'll see. On the other hand, which I think is more likely, I'll probably get hooked and this forum will be my next obsession.

Some Book Favorites
Enders game and ender's shadow books are my favorite
Currently reading hitchhiker's series
Sanderson's Elantris and Stormlight Archive series
other vast quantities of books I'm failing to remember.

Generally I favor fiction, science fiction, and fantasy but if anything has an interesting plot and engaging ideas, or basically good attributes, I would love to hear them.

Aside from that, there is nothing on my mind as of now, thus, this post ends.

EDIT: I completely forgot to add that I'm male and 17.
EDIT2: Oh, and handstand walking is a favorite of mine, but not really freerunning. Try it. It's like learning to walk, but on your hands. (Weird...)

Hi there, welcome to the forum ^^ it's great to have another Melee fan from California on here!

I think what you're describing as Si may actually be a combination of Ne and a moment of actualized awareness. Si is more associated with memory and worldview, while Ne is what gathers information from the outside environment. But um, I'm can't be certain of what your experience is, so I'll not say anything definitively.

I wonder, do you like stories about dragons? If so, the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey is quite engaging, from what I remember. It sounds like you do quite a bit of fantasy reading though, so perhaps you already know of it.

Anyway, hope you enjoy your time here.

There's just an indescribable fluidity and beauty in melee other smashes can't match.

What I think is Si just randomly reminds me of where I am and what I'm doing. I made an effort some time ago to pay more attention to my surroundings and so I think I consciously programmed Si to do that to me. But now that I want to be in Ti mode now, sometimes I'm too aware of my surroundings to do that. I start what I call "running conversations" in my head to just talk about the world and sometimes that succeeds in getting me back into my natural introvert state. Other times, it doesn't. Problems, problems.

I've read the dragon rider series by cornelia funke which was pretty ok, but I haven't heard of that. I've always liked Dragons but i'm not exactly obsessed with them. I prefer western over japanese but both are pretty awesome. Any book available online for free or in a pdf, I can put on my kindle and I end up reading it eventually. I will look that up. Is that your favorite?

Freerunning videos involve much more shenanigans than I am willing to try, so my freerunning doesn't look nearly as cool as that. Ne is a great tool for responding fluidly, but those with Se are much better due to their ability to reapply the same movements to flip after flip, trick after trick. I had an ISTP friend bring me into it. He and the instructor I'm friends with there (ESXP) had the insane ability to learn flips really fast. I can tell Ne to perform flips and then I don't have to think about it, but I can't pay attention to anything my body does during it because of how fast I have to go. They'll both do flips on concrete, but I flip on pads and grass or when I know I can do the flip. I've broken several fingers in padded environments and although I see these occurrences as outliers, I know somethings behind it. Probably that first Si imprint takes some time to sketch. :/

Enough ranting. Thanks. I've had some time to learn, about 4 years on and off due to soreness and injury and breaks and whatnot, but I honestly believe anybody (and by anybody I say Ps mostly) could learn with enough practice.

How can I quote two people and still have their name in the quote without it going to a separate page...?

Wow. I didn't see that there... I don't think i'm alone in being terrible at finding things.

Haha ironically all I do is watch pro games on youtube. I exlusively watch Zv_ and have only seen one or two T/P vs T/P for some reason. Now that I think about it, I don't exactly know. I have SC2 from a friend, but my computer is too slow and has no space to download all the extra files after the initial download, so i'm stuck for now. :(

I just finished the first one. i'm not too intrigued with the geeky aspects but the humor it/he has is definitely unique from many other authors.

Hey can you do some of those the Assassin's Creed moves? Of course I don't mean you can do the Leaps of Faith which is technically impossible IRL.

Actually, I can. Sometimes I'll be messing around doing tricks and stuff and then just kill somebody and pickpocket their money, it's really fun.

Assassin's Creed is pretty well setup to the point where everything is perfectly placed for parkouring, except some of the jumps across things are nearly humanly impossible. Some of the leaping from bar to bar I could do, but I would never try it because it would be stupid if I did it that high up. Here's an example, the 3 jumps he does immediately after 3:35 I think I could pull off, but the rest of the barwork before that second you would have to be really skilled, and that building scaling he does after his barwork is nearly impossible.
https://youtu.be/v3H6-ywlWr8?t=3m35s
In more controlled places closer to the ground and padded I've done jumping like that and I know I could do it higher up, but I don't want to take the risks. I know it sounds somewhat hypocritical to say I can do it if I haven't actually done it, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Scaling buildings is a different matter, It really would depend on the building.

Yes, indeed. I think I prefer the original melee.. I've tried out the new game, and it just doesn't compare to the original. I love how much thought can be put into melee, how creative one can be with the sequence of moves. It's quite nuanced and fluid, as you say.

What you describe does sound like the perception process. Something I've learned about the functions is that they always operate as dualities - Si/Ne, Ti/Fe, etc. I think overuse of the perception processes may be a common occurrence for Ti leads (Fi leads too), since introverted judgement is so naturally inactive externally. I think you're smart to pursue your natural mode, though, too much extroversion can be taxing/scrambling over time. Oh, the endless reach for balance between the functions XD

I haven't had the time for much recreational reading lately, but I remember the Dragonriders of Pern being one of my favorites back in the day. I also really enjoyed A Wrinkle in Time and Swiftly Tilting Planet. I used to be quite fond of dragons. I still like them, but I wouldn't say they're necessarily my favorite fantasy creature. Western are more aesthetically pleasing than eastern, but the backstory of eastern dragons is more interesting (of course.. I'm a fan of Japanese culture overall, so that's a personal bias).

It would have been interesting to see how brawl would have been made if melee became competitive after brawl's release. Maybe we would have had a better Melee. It is true that having melee become competitive prior to brawl could have helped balance-wise, but then again meta-knight, so probably not.

I'll have to check these dualities, I agree with Ti/Ne but I don't know about Si. Ti/Si and Ne/Fe are definites, but now i'll check to see about more 'dualities'.

"Western are more aesthetically pleasing than eastern"
Yeah thats the basis of my preference. I said japanese, then I realized eastern but I was too lazy to change it. Maybe I'll investigate this "back-story" sometime.

I think brawl may have been designed with a kid-friendly audience in mind.. that's just my impression though. I'm not sure if melee competitions would have changed their plans for brawl, but I suppose it could have influenced them to make it more like melee.

The legends accompanying the symbol of the dragon in China seem more deeply archetypal than those of the West. It's even incorporated in their creation myth, which I found quite interesting. Ah, Melee is Melee. It's the Super Turbo or 3S of Smash. 64 was fun but it was amazing to see how much depth was added to the sequel (they added side+B and air dodge for example). That was fifteen years ago though and while it is still interesting and probably has the most aesthetic out of the four it isn't really that worth playing unless you're already pro or just curious. Don't get me wrong, it was and is still amazing but good luck winning any tournaments nowadays; otherwise just play for fun and or nostalgia, which is nice.. Interesting to note that we didn't like it at first due to how slippery it was compared to the original. I come from a family with four siblings so we all got to enjoy multiplayer together and logged many hours in. After a while it grows on you and becomes rather genius.

As far as Brawl goes, some people made PM. Melee was largely an accident and Brawl was basically a return to the original 64 style (notice how moves naturally connect rather than having characters easily slip out like in Melee; Melee is more improvisational). It pretty much sucked but was fun to see new characters and stages. It was just designed to be less difficult. Now that Smash 4 is out you can see how again it's more similar to 64. Except, Sakurai (;etc) seems to be conflicted over who to appeal to. Sure there isn't as much free movement involved but it's fun for what it is and more people than you might think believe 64's play style to be the best. It's an exhausted topic and ultimately people are free to play what they choose. The newest one has been out less than a year so it's interesting to see where it'll go, in a way.

Either way, Melee is still one of the best games ever made (it had a menu you could bear to look at, sequels just seem like re-hashes) and while it never gets boring seeing a Fox/Marth/Ice Climbers/Sheik, I will suggest that the newest title, as far as it goes, has a bit less hate and more support than one might think, which of course means nothing. They're still actually pretty similar once you get past a few user friendly mechanics, and all five games in the series (including PM) get boring after about the same amount of time. I'm actually interested in seeing if there will ever be a P4. And I'm looking forward to Smash 5, even though it probably won't be as cool as Melee.

Actually, with the recent addition of Ryu in Smash 4 something, maybe, nearly happened... We saw an addition to the engine not seen since 64 to Melee. Brawl was disappointing because it was so similar to Melee whereas Melee was a VAST upgrade from 64. Smash 4 is similar to Brawl and yes we all hated it at first (and still do, in many ways) but with the way Ryu plays maybe they'll be able to give the engine another sort of evolution like that again.

Yeah I play PM too. They do get boring, but that depends on the skill level of those you play. Since I've nobody to practice with that matches my skill level, I don't have much to learn, but if I did then that would make it much more interesting. You have a history of smash too? You said you played with your brothers, was it technical play or introductory(wavedashing, shuffling)?

Kind of both but you saw the need for extra technique the more you played. Melee was interesting because it was more slippery than 64, meaning characters always fell out of moves that were supposed to combo. There were still combos in the game but they required the use of advanced movement techniques to get you where you needed to be in order to perform them... Sure you could say the movement was much more free ranging than any of the other games but you still felt kind of stuck and forced to use loopholes. In the newer ones you actually have weird fluid movement (with 64-style connecting hitboxes for "combos") but it isn't as awesome as it sounds plus everyone's range was massively nerfed, couple that with lack of advanced techniques; etc and you can't really do those combos or setups like you could in Melee. You can still do follow up combos after the first or second hit but it's more fair in that the other player has more of a chance to escape and the pursuer has to rely on good enough reads.

It's true that melee is more slippery than 64. What do you mean by loopholes? For combo escaping or movement options? I don't like smash 4 that much. But the meta needs to develop, except now, without a fixed build, buffs and nerds may be rampant.

Moves aren't always supposed to combo in melee. Maybe you could clarify what you meant, but other than very precise chain grabbing, shine walking, or whatever its called, and a few other exceptions, no combos are ensured, and it still takes skill to start and continue them.

Although the skill barrier is pretty high, it's very rewarding. And just fun, imo. Dash dancing, wave dashing, shield dropping, ccing, they are complex techniques but having more control over your character adds to the game.

I hadn't noticed smash 4s range reduction until you pointed that out, ive only seen one game as of now, but I've read up on it.

For movement options.

I don't like Smash 4 that much either, but it is playable to say the least. Melee is more action oriented and faster paced, it might be better but there aren't that many characters in the game. Again, Melee is one of the best games ever made.

Yeah, I meant chain grabbing and anything similar to whatever leads to a C. Falcon knee.

It is very high and time consuming. I've played it since 2001 but didn't put that much time towards complex techniques until later on. Yeah there's a certain grace to it. It's fun. I need to play more Melee.

You do. Who do you main? I started with marth but went to a tournament and got destroyed. Probably from lack of people practice, and I was pretty nervous. Not mentally, but outwardly, if that makes sense. So I picked up falco, and I'm much better with him, I think.

People say I tend to give them the most trouble when I use Falco, but I don't really like him that much. Otherwise I'll try to use Roy or Marth; etc

In Sm4sh I try to use at least ten characters because of all the matchup scenarios. Right now is my Marth/Lucina week but I still need to learn more fundamentals with my top two characters (not exactly sure who they are). Haven't actually played in a few days.

Going to tournaments is so-so. Can be helpful, definitely. I lose matches I know I shouldn't lose though. So make sure you get plenty of warm up in. Met a few decent people too. Hit it off basically instantly with this probable ENTP guy at a tourney not too long ago but have not seen him since... There are communities out there with people always looking to train.

Yeah. I think if I wanted to do better I would have to get really into it, but the place I went to had some super devoted smashes with their tvs and game cubes signed by the pros, and I don't know if I want to take the time to compete with that. It would take much more practice and much more money for tournament entry.

Also, lots of sketchy people.

Sweet, where do you live? I can maybe visit then we can play it.
Some of those people are trying to go pro, so that's who you're pretty much getting involved with. You can learn a lot from them. So far haven't really met any sketch bros.
generally you would have to devote the next few months of your life to that. Hopefully there's still time for other stuff.

Central Cali.

I'd be up for continually practicing if it was consistant. I can't do tourneys because I'd be paying 100s of dollars for practice I could easily get from a friend.

Honestly, if I got 30 to 40 hours of practice with a skilled player, I think i'd be ready to take on tourney players.

I think I live near there. But yes, right now it isn't worth entering tourneys. Usually you have the same people placing top 5 or so. I go to the arcades probably once a week and play there. More of these locales are starting to pop up, interestingly enough. If we still had Melee I might have been playing it more. We had it twice but lost it both times. I know you can download it nowadays and stuff but I don't think I'll go that route.

If you already own the game it's not illegal to download a modded version onto a USB to use on the wii.
True, it is the same people, but it does depend on the place. Hbox won evo, and he was 6th or something in the ranks, and smaller tourneys are much more volatile, so if everybody's in the same range I imaging placings would be sporadic to some degree. In other places where there's a clear #1, probably not.

But I've only seen one scene so this is purely hypothetocal.
