Thank goodness. Bad flash playing was one of the things that bugged me most when I moved to linux... but it may also be that I switched from IE to Firefox at the same time. Chromium seems to fare little better than firefox.

This is wonderful news! *does an Irish jig*

edit: fail. Apparently only Google Chrome works... Chromium does not. Firefox doesn't recognize the video format either, for whatever reason.

Now that flash is slowly but steady fading away, world peace is no illusion anymore!

Excellent news! :D I'm sure they'll move to an open codec as well when they figure out how to do it and still work within the copyright laws. Or at least show a good effort to staying inside the copyright laws ;)

Flash won't die. As someone who's into independent flash media and flash game, whether or not HTML5 replaces video doesn't matter. Flash is among my favourite programs, as it allows for a lot creation by people who don't necessarily need to be pros.

Flash allows us to do a lot, I don't get the impression, from reading about HTML5 that it will be able to replace all the media functions of Flash.

If flash dies it won't be happy or peaceful day to me, as it will mean the death of a massive amount of independent media.

Yeah I haven't heard anything about HTML 5 replacing the game creation element of Flash at all, so far all I've heard about is video. Though Flash has been horribly overused, and abused, it does have it's virtues, and I think it will, and deserves to, stick around for quite a while longer. Perhaps it will just be used more for games and certain other interactive features and less for video in the future.

This does seem like a bit of a premature adoption of HTML5 as well though, isn't it not even really complete at this point? I don't think most browsers have even adopted it yet, unless this changed just recently. I'll have to start really following HTML5's progress.

Flash will probably exists for a long time, as it's easy to make media with and individuals will still like it for that use. Just games on places like http://www.kongregate.com/ and more indie, fun stuff on deviantart. Not to mention our own games here are probably flash.

It sounded to me like HTML5 will be able to integrate things like video without using flash. That would be nice, it would be simpler.

The news is just jumping the gun for a story. I guess nothing interesting is actually going on. I've been finding more mediocre stories lately.
