Chicks. In my experience chicks dig us. Granted, I'm the only INTP I know to any significant degree. And the other INTP I know well is actually so socially awkward that I wouldn't be surprised to find out his 43 year old butt was a virgin until he married the wife he met on eharmony a year ago. And even more, I’ve been in situations where I was talking to INTP IRL. It was like our ideas were merging. The three of us were literally absorbing the creativity of others and our thought logically converged to some level. With proper training, it might be possible to make one huge parallel computer from a legion of INTP. Should we bother trying…

But perhaps they're not as popular and well-known as penis/miscellaneous growth forums.

That was sort of my reaction: Not to sound like a complete asshole, but this hardly seems like the epitome of online intellectualism, more of a middle tier below physicsforums and slashdot but well above the vast majority of other places (there are some really shitty forums out there). It does have it's own kind of intelligence though, or at least there's a lot of points that can be made here and will actually be understood that would most likely be viewed as crazy/incomprehensible/incoherent in most other places. Plus it allows a nice juxtaposition of serious thought with inane babble that I find quite pleasing.

Don't take that as too harsh, I love this place (most of the time), but "the greatest collection of free thinkers, effectively marshalled facts and persuasive oratory since Cicero prosecuted Gaius Verres" was lolable.

And off-topic J-spewing is your idea of raising the bar?

The question was "Who's the boss around here?" That the question even needs to be asked is itself quite intriguing...the vast majority of other forums employ things like color variants, little sparkly avatar borders, and other uniquely-identifying regalia to make their ruling classes stick out like sore thumbs. Perhaps this forum's failure to observe the foregone conclusion of these things as functional necessities only validates your statement. Then again...perhaps the fact that this forum appears to function quite efficiently despite the lack only validates that this forum has ascended to a caliber so high that it has soared straight over your head.

OP...you're looking for something that doesn't exist here. You have to pick the color of your expressions yourself. You crave direction...you feel lost without a cult of personality to follow. You rely on highly visible authority figures to draw lines of conduct for you, because you cannot draw them for yourself. Perhaps INTPc would better suit you.

I really don't know what other forums you guys have been on, but in my books this ranks pretty high. I don't post here much, but the discussions in which I've participated are always among the most satisfying I've stumbled across in the internets.

You crave direction...you feel lost without a cult of personality to follow. You rely on highly visible authority figures to draw lines of conduct for you, because you cannot draw them for yourself. Perhaps INTPc would better suit you.

For once I can say with relative confidence that the random poster which I met in the Internet is inaccurate with their analysis of my personality.

I was responding to Space Yeti. I wasn't intending to raise the bar, and am probably incapable of doing it anyway. Just adding that I have seen (what appears to me to be) more rigorous and thorough analysis and discussion elsewhere, fairly frequently.

Also, I should probably clarify and say I meant (internet-based) forums for discussions, not necessarily forums. Blogs, articles, etc allowing comments. There is definitely some really great stuff here, and the average standard is higher than most places I've come across. But a lot of discussions seem to fail to get anywhere substantial because there aren't enough people with a sufficient level of expertise in the area (and a lot of ground is covered). Topical blogs and articles probably have an advantage here as they draw people on an interest/skill base, rather than a cognitive-function/personality base. Expertise would be more concentrated in the former, leading to more fruitful (or at least substantive) discussions.

There's no doubt this place is interesting, fun and worthwhile though, and most likely closer to the top of the pyramid than the majority of other places (in terms of ideas and thought). Assuming (as we have seen done many, many times before) that this forum contains the peak of intellectual discourse simply because the members are INTP and interested in philosophy (and sometimes, thinking) is unwarranted and perhaps betrays narrow experience, although I think often enough it's meant only as a joke.

Also, I believe the lack of rank signifiers has been pointed out before several times, though not on this thread. Some were in favour of changing it, but it's stuck, which I think is nice.

(The point I was somewhat frivolously trying to make up above was that the benefits of the forum to "the boss" behind it all may simply be the forum itself, no derivative benefits like money, power, sex, or free beer. Isotelic/exotelic, all that. "Cicero" etc. was meant to be merely humorous hyperbole.)
