I imagine it's not very expensive. He might be fond of a few oldguard, but since he's notoriously difficult to reach, my guess is that he's not overly interested in those that have come since he left.

From my observation most members here are INTPs, what make you think INTPs will click on ads?

Assume this forum's owner is INTP and I was the owner, I wouldn't also do the business on this forum. This forum is not supposed to be business, if I want to make money I will do on other sites, completely.

Polaris is in fact the avatar of Ragnar.

He made the account Polaris long ago so that he may dwell upon us mortals, as our kind, without the burden of leadership. He then reascended to the modbox as Polaris that he might conspire insurrection among modbox to dethrone Lightspeed and establish his reign as absolute.

He is also clearly not very good at managing his finances.

It of course follows by necessity that Redbaron is also clearly gay.

ehmmm, you dont necessarily have to make a profit...

-> but clearly cos this forum costs money to upkeep
and there are no ads meaning there is no revenue
-> so the forum is probably involving a monthly loss to someone....

EDIT: so does that mean we all leave this forum and create a new one where we all contribute enough money to let the forum run or forever just using the interest to pay off the costs.
By doing that we dont have to fear the wrath of our "sustainer-Gods"

i think "have a bigger dick" type ads appeal to the INTP sense of perfectionism, essentialism and logical scrutiny.

That's just the particular page's html... Think of it as wallpaper. Not the actual code that runs the site.

I investigated forking the forum recently and consulted with Ptah who forked INTPComplex. It's time consuming, takes a lot of work and the biggest issue (to my mind) is recurring costs on the order of a few hundred per month, plus some 400-500 startup costs. It could be done cheaper in my estimate, say if I go with my current provider and cheap out on the services (no SSD, no dedicated host, etc). Another option would be to host it on Google or AWS, which would give as much scalability as I could want, but I estimate would cost more (it's nearly impossible to estimate with those services, you have to try and measure). I'm unwilling to donate several thousand dollars a year to such an effort (not to mention time), so other sources of funding were looked at.

Ads would run down the site and probably be largely ineffective, donation ware never works, paid membership is possible but goes against the philosophy of a forum. Best would be a core group of supporters who know each other IRL and pay for it.

I think the best thing is to leave the forum as it is. Ragnar probably has it relatively on the cheap, low bandwidth hosting, low level of service, old forum software. That's fine as long as he's willing to keep it going.

Since we don't know how long the Ragnar is willing to support the forum, we may want to look at having some redundancies in place. After all, we are family here.

I don't know what this forking business is all about, but couldn't you start a new forum for pretty cheap? Something shiny with cool features to lure people away from this forum. Put up a sticky thread saying "Go here," and then take away everyone's posting rights on INTPf.

Oh, but then post counts would be gone. Names might be stolen too, I guess. That creates a lot of work, huh?
