Personally I love to hear jokes and I laugh a lot about them, but I also have always gone by the old saying " If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all " bit. since it implies that you should not make jokes that "put down" people.

Watching comedy is one of those exceptions though. Since it is very open to all sorts of humor where people can pay to see it, and actually want to hear it, so I accept that, and I do not have anything against that.

For most other situations though, that involve people who may or may not find certain brands of humor to be funny, I think it is only appropriate to respect that area, especially if the humor is off-color.

Now this is my view on it, but I'd like to hear from the rest of you, about when humor is acceptable and when it goes over that imaginary line for you.

I lol'd. Oh jeez dude, you're just asking for it.

I am merely following the guidlines that Cegorach had provided me with. In them he stated that it is acceptable for me to start a thread where I can ask the people for their opinions, and that is exactly what I am doing. If you have something you wish to say then I suggest you bring it up with him.;)

By all means, you can post whatever you want for all I care.

I'm commenting on the sheer ridiculousness of bringing up "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all" to a bunch on inferior Fe's. :storks:

Heck, that's even an offense to an INTP. ;)

It's always too far for someone.

You're talking about jokes but what about such things such as sexual orientation, skin color or nationality?
A lot of people feel terribly offended by gay, black and/or Jewish people, just to name some examples. Even much more so than they feel about jokes.

Personally I don't like racism or sexism or any of what you mentioned, but when they are put into the contexts of a joke, then it becomes more acceptable to some people.

Basically, what I am asking is for your opinion on the subject. When do you draw the line on humor? When does it go too far for you?

I love British Humour.
If that does not sufficiently answer your question: There is hardly any kind of humour I find offensive, and if I do, it is strongly intended to be offensive and either extremely humiliates someone or lacks any wit.

I'd love to hear an example if you wouldn't mind. ( just trying to draw a picture here )

I hate examples. I'm an INTP, after all.
However, to go more in depth: humour that is considered offensive by me mocks or humiliates a person so strongly that I feel actual pity for them (I think that once happened in regard to Butters in a South Park episode, but I don't know which one right now), or a person is criticized very bluntly - thus seeming to be meant seriously -, especially because of a characteristic they are not responsible for, e.g. their race. And some people's (usually TV stand-up comedians') jokes are just so stupid that their blatant unfunniness offends me (I guess I see that as an insult to my intellect).
So I think one element of the "humour formula" is the right amount of exaggeration, which does, of course, differ from person to person.

Behind you, kicking you in the ass
*sigh*

Some people (like me) draw the line somewhere past South Park.

Some people (no names) draw the line at around Leave it to Beaver.

Most people are somewhere in between.

If you don't like where someone's line is then you can do one of 3 things (that I can think of):

1. Try to lecture the offender about it and tell hir they should change. This will usually backfire. Case in point.....

2. You can say "Hey I didn't appreciate that" get a response like "just a joke man" and then say "yeah well still" and maybe the offender will dial it back a little. Maybe not. It's your best hope though.

3. Understand that different people have different lines and just learn not to take things so seriously. Could work but it is also suffering in silence if something really bothers you.

Now I don't believe in singling out an individual and teasing them, even if you mean it in jest. I might try it a little to see what kind of person they are, gauge their reactions and if it seems they aren't taking it in stride then leave them alone.
**this is very different from using an inclusive like we, I'm not singling out anyone that way, rather I am including them within the group dynamic**

The line between being funny and just being an ass is a very fine yet vague one for most of us. It's pretty much like what that US Supreme Court justice said about indecency, you just know it when you see it.

Are we done now?

It is also acceptable for me to ban you for two days for reviving the issues in a closed thread, and also for taking stuff literally.

If each time a thread is shut down it restarts, regaining it's strength like Anteus thrown to the earth, Old Mother Night triumphs.

Thread locked.
