What is it that makes a person beautiful?

Is it the position of the nose? The eyes? The mouth?

Well, yes, proportions and symmetry have a lot to do with our perception of beauty. So does the appearance of good health.

Beyond that it's personal preference.

Though worth noting is that our youth obssessed culture will prefer models who look young, having smooth skin, wide eyes, a slender build etc.
This preference, stemming from popular media, still influences most people.

Yeah? Duh.

Eye shape, distance between eyes, nose shape, mouth type, cheekbones, overall facial structure?

No offense, but they all look ugly to me. Especially the first one, she looks so...old...

@Dormouse, I know youth has something to do with it, I know that distance between eyes have something to do with it, but many people have about the same distance and scale between eyes yet the opposite gender is attracted to one particular individual's face. Build has a lot to do with it but now I'm just talking about the face. Also, there are plenty of people out there who look young, yet, their not necessarily considered "hot".

It would also be nice to know what kind of face structure satisfies the requirement for handsome. It would quench my curiosity. :/

I don't really know any girl that's cute to me, I think that the girls who really do make my heart skip a beat is in anime and manga. Weird, I know. But I usually forget about what that first jolt of surprise was like after a few minutes.

I really wish both of you (Ashitaria and Anamalech) would post less. It's almost as if you're oblivious to the fact that you ruin threads with your pointless back and forth bs. But hey, keep posting cliche American Actors and Anime girls who look like they're 10, I'm sure you'll convince more members that this is a conversation worth joining.

Thank you, flow, for your constructive comment. I'm sure your addition to the BS helped a lot.
Hey, I'm not supposed to be the one to judge but since you were the one starting it, why not?
After all, this is coming from the fact that you are the oh-so great thread maker and the ultimate most intelligent guy in the universe.
Anyway, thanks for your maturity, but I can do without it. This is a forum, not some kind of government-run chat system, so me and Anamalech will post whatever we want, thank you very much.

@Fallenman, Since when has this forum became so strict to silliness and overall joking around? We are not offending anyone, neither are we breaking forum rules. If you wish for us to stop however, post some comments that will change the conversation from joking around to an intellectual topic. Don't just stand there and say we suck.

Here's some constructive criticism: You two constantly sidetrack threads with your own conversation. Instead of talking over a forum talk to each other on some kind of chat (aim, msn messenger). I'm not saying don't post, I'm saying post less. Neither of you use any discretion, and quite frankly it's not fun to read through a thread only to inevitably see Ashitaria Anamalech Ashitaria Anamalech Ashitaria Anamalech back and forth and back and forth. This forum works best when the posts come from more than two people. Let other people think and respond.

Okay, here is some constructive advice. Most of the people come here for themselves. Not for other people. Before opening your big fat mouth to judge, remember that we do things because we want to (should be obvious enough) and we as INTPs do not do things for others unless we are obliged to by a favor, certain amount of respect, or a relationship.
By now, you have neither of the above three.
Other people can come think and respond pretty fine. It's not as if we are drowning out their thoughts, they can just cut into the conversation and change it into an intellectual conversation. There are many many examples of this in the IRC.
So please, keep your "intelligence" and "maturity" to yourself.

For me, 'beautiful' and 'handsome' are different than the rest of the compliments like 'pretty,' 'cute,' 'hot,' etc. A person who is handsome or beautiful is all of those, and then some. There's just something different, something unique and special about them. It's sort of an all-encompassing compliment. I'm sure physical appearance plays some part in whether someone is beautiful or handsome, but it's so much more than that. I can't really describe exactly what it is, and it's different for everyone depending on preferences.
Anyway, there are very few people I would classify as truly 'beautiful' or 'handsome'.

I would say so too. Cute would be granted to a puppy or a really kawaii girl, pretty is harder to find, hot can occasionally be attributed to some models.
But there's one thing that just confuses me...what is it that makes them cute or hot to us?

Mhmm. Cute is something that makes me go 'D'aawwwhhh' and want to hug someone for just being so adorable. Pretty, at least in my view, applies to every kindhearted person I know because I honestly don't know any plain or even ugly people who have good hearts. There is always something redeeming. Hot is typically something that has the potential to turn me on, which is usually pretty difficult to do.
What makes someone cute or hot just depends on personal preference. Yes, there are some general societal guidelines that many people follow that determines whether someone is or is not these things, but in the end it's all up to the individual. Which has been pretty clearly demonstrated in the thread already between your preferences and Anamalech's preferences. But it's not just in physical characteristics, there's also behavioral characteristics that I believe play a rather large role in deciding who's attractive to us. At least for the less shallow portion of society.

Um...I'm pretty sure that our preferences implied are very very out, mainly because we were joking and being silly. But that's up to you...
In any case then, does preference have something to do with personality? Because there is a certain group of girls who like a certain type of look, another certain group who likes a certain type of look...
Might be an interesting theory.

Yeah, I knew you were joking, haha.
I think preference definitely has something (if not just about everything) to do with personality. And looking back into people's histories of who they've been attracted to for a certain period of time, there are usually consistencies- whether they be in a physical sense or a behavioral or intellectual sense.

Edit: To clarify, I am talking about personality on an individual level rather than MBTI types. Two people of the same type may have radically different views of what's attractive to them.

Yes, definitely. Unfortunately, I haven't had much experience to say what I am attracted to yet, though I see all the girls here in this forum as really nice cousins. :D

I wonder what each MBTI type likes...Adymus?

I'm INTP or INTJ or INFJ and the girls I've been attracted to:

INTP, INTP, INFJ, INFP.

Mostly shy and introverted.

I can't stand ENTJs, any SJs, ENTPs are CRAAZY and toooo much.

Bleh. I like nice polite girls who don't get up into your face and shout things out in a high-pitched shrilly voice and throw stuff at you.

Or maybe they just do that to me.

Very simply, it's about immunology and babies.

If you have a good immune system, then you can fight off viri and bacteria which does show up physically. The symmetry is one. If someone has an infected sinus, the facial shape would change, making it less symmetric and less beautiful. Also, skin texture and color is important to ward off harmful environmental effects etc.

Having good genetics for immune system isn't enough. You genes and that of a potential must be most different. Those with similar immune system will smell like nasty BO to each other. Those with differing immune system have a more pleasant BO.

Researchers have identified 6 genes that mark these kinds of smells. And the immune system is the digestive system. These genes also express physical appearances as well.

Authors don't explain what beauty is because it is indeed in the eye of the beholder. For each person, beauty will be different.

edit:

I should also point out that the faces of hollywoodland are hand picked, not for their beauty alone, but also if it's a memorable face.

Well being attracted to women sometime I guess I can say that to me all of the (real) pics in this thread suffer from one or more of these failures - pointy chins, eyes that aren't open enough and/or too much makeup.

I noticed after the other night (when somehow I landed up chatting to a random girl in a pub for over an hour) how little attention I pay to the physical. All I can remember about her was that she had mid length dark hair... Did I stay with her rather than finding my colleagues because she smelt good as durentu says beauty involves? Sounds strange but maybe

Damn, I would have liked for you to keep your posts. My favorite was your sarcasm against Flow. :(

In any case, I want everyone to stop posting useless stupid judgmental crap and do something constructive. If you don't like it, tough. This is a forum, not a class-induced environment.

If each individual have personal tastes, why does everyone seem to like this particular girl?

No, I meant as in there's a girl who everyone seems to think of hot, be it a particular model or celebrity. Perhaps biology has something to do with it....

Social role theory.

*facepalm* ashitaria, you are aware that internet forums have rules of conduct and a hierarchy of administration, right? "This is a forum, not a class-induced environment" doesn't mean "I'm on the internet, anything goes!"

They have similar tastes. Dude seriously, it really is a matter of preference. You also forget the factor of hormonal teenage males.

Am I the only one who lol'd at ashitaria saying he's asexual right after saying Brad Pitt is "alright"? :D

My answer:
Two tons of exosuit, who’s going to argue it?
There's nothing like an unconventional gift to help a girl forget valentine’s day is a contrived exercise in commercialism, and nothing says "I trust you" like high-powered weaponry.

It's all a matter of opinion. I think Shakira is beautiful, others may disagree. It's hard to pinpoint what makes someone beautiful when people think so differently about it.

Isn't she kawaii? <3

I was thinking about this, and it occured to me that anyone who looked like that in reality would be freakish and disgusting. Nestled right in the crook of uncanny valley. On a zombie level of grotesqueness.

Those proportions are an aberration!
