I realize it is judged to mean you have a good sense or knowhow on what it is you are talking about, but is that it? when somebody says "you have good/bad taste in ____" what the hell does that actually mean? does it mean "you have failed/succeeded in making good judgement"? or does it mean "I (don't) agree with what you are saying"

One is saying you fail/succeed and should (never) make a critique like that again, and one is accepting that the two of you are different/similar, but of the same ability

It is recognising a sound aesthetic preference based upon highly discriminating value-judgements.

Tate is entirely subjective and you should only be flattered if someone you admire claims you have good taste.

its pretty simple. Tastes are different with different tongues. but, of course, there are "established majority" norm created taste.

But to have taste is to have a similar liking with the compliment-er/giver.

I have taste for fine wine, cheese, smoked salmon and classical music. If any girls are into the same things we can get drunk, eat cheese and smoked salmon and listen to classical. Then you can make sexual advances on me. I know what the ladies like. :o
