I'm somewhat bored with my life right now, and I'm looking for new hobbies. I like to collect fountain pens and ink, but it's expensive and I'm not exactly Bill Gates at the moment.

Objects in the mirror might look closer than they
compose my music, writte lyrics for it, record guitar, bass and voice, write the digital drum parts, mix it, master it, create the cover for the demotape, that means either take photograph and do some photoshop or paint it with a cheap bamboo tablet for virtual hand drawing, play concerts in small clubs, give free copies of the record, etc.
Besides music i like to play video games once a while but i'm tired of them right now, started playing the last zelda game and gave up quickly, i have to get on that again, i love those games.
Read some book, once i tried to write some short story about a post mortem - not quite even lived - squadron that tried to mantein equilibrium between those who were dead and those who were "living" but i got tired of it and gave up.
Practice english here in forums and in real life with strangers.
Do exercise 4 days per week.
The part where i suck totally is the actual real life work lol.

Chess is pretty much THE obsession right now...but with a big tournament goal in mind for next year ($10,000). Since I live and work alone, I can study/play 24 hours a day if I like...and to win next year will require some serious "deliberate practice" over the next 15 months. Competitive cycling is my other "thing"...time trials mostly. Lots of other side hobbies like writing, dictionaries, home theater, subwoofers, politics, documentaries, music, interior design, fashion, mbti/enneagram...etc.

Writing, music, analyzing cinema, hiking, RPGs, reading, drawing, psych, and whatever random thing looks interesting that crosses my path.

I'm going to go learn how to shoot a gun this spring. Whee. (Branch out, right?) If I was going to take up an outdoors hobby, it would be alpine climbing; it's something I've had an interest in for many years but did not have time nor money.

* I play and design RPGs (as a hobby, no career has been launched form it, yet). My current project is a VisBas RPG I'm calling "Bad RPG". It sucks, hence the name.

* I play vidja games, but don't get enough time at them to be considered a "hard core" gamer. It's not a title I'd really care to achieve anyway.

* I play Magic, The Gathering, as well, though I'm not super into it. The appeal is mostly deck design and testing.

* You'd think going to Lowe's was one of my hobbies, since I've seemed to go there every single day since getting my house.

* I luuuuurve me some coffee drinkin'.

* I enjoy a good cookin' night, too.

* I'm also a father, and watching my children learn and develope is almost a hobbie. My daughter can form new concepts and multiple sentence communication. She's also starting to be scared of things that only exist in her imagination. There'a a frosted window downstairs that she thinks a monster hangs out near, outside. I open it and show her it's steps to the patio every other day, but when it's closed, the stairs are a monster again.

There's a huge pier going into the ocean near my home and I just stand there and pretend I'm sailing into the blue. Also, it's fun to watch the pelicans dive straight down into the water. I love it when the sting rays breech the water, because they look like happy-flappy squares trying to fly. Dolphins and pilot whales make my heart leap as well. Last week, I saw a Magnificent Frigatebird. It was fucking spectacular.

Sorry I haven't responded in a while, my memory of creating this thread was lost in an ocean of thoughts about how many nukes it would take to destroy Jupiter (it was a lot...). All of your suggestions have been really interesting and I'll definitely consider picking up some of them, at least for a few weeks before I lose all interest and motivation then move onto something new. :p

I'm going to go learn how to shoot a gun this spring. Whee. (Branch out, right?)

Try skeet shooting. Handgun is boring (just aiming at a stupid stationary target), but with skeet there's a lot more skill involved with the flying target and so it's way more fun. Even better if you get a nice range where you shoot in a 'natural' setting (like over a lake). Plus the bigger handguns are so intensely violent, like my dads 45 I shot, that it takes the fun away.*

I've killed most of my hobbies. I have money but not enough time and energy. Oh I have the energy, but it's a matter of focus. I just finished selling off my photography gear even though I really enjoy it. Too much time, takes too much focus, my gear sits around too much. Poured the money from that into stereo gear.

So I've gone back to my roots - music and computers. And a movie about every day, but I wouldn't call that a hobby. That's it, all I need, I have no plans to travel or try anything else. Been there done that, I'm done exploring outward and no am diving deep.

* I expressed an interest in my Dads beautiful showpiece shotgun. Probably 60 years old, it's a work of art, so it's willed to me when my Dad passes. I sometimes think "yeah, maybe I'll take up shooting it occasionally" and other times I think "are you crazy?".

Other than music and computers, everything else for me was "once and done".

No, actually, my character uses them in RPGs and I want to understand the experience IRL just to make me more aware in my games. Same thing for my story writing, I like to understand the experience so that I can relay it properly.

So I guess you misunderstood some of my reasons for trying them, although I had not gone into detail.

I've done skeet shooting a little bit with a shot gun. I found it boring as an end in itself.

I went shooting a little while back. If I had the money I would do it constantly. (little bit each day or an hour on weekends) It's just one of those skills that I could see myself perfecting over a long period of time. I wouldn't mind trying handguns as everyone talks about how inaccurate/how much skill is required to hit something. (also for writing/roleplaying reasons like yourself) Rifle shooting is fairly simple if you only need head-size precision. :D

Unfortunately it's one of two hobbies I enjoy the most and both cost large amounts of money to sustain.

Thanks for all that.

I haven't really tallied full cost if I persist (but I tend to not like to commit to long-term schedule slots and costs unless I really like something). I'm in Maryland, with a decent size population, so there are a number of indoor ranges around here that you can either buy a $150-200 annual membership and then just pay a small fee for lane use. Not sure if gun rental is included (for their basic guns), although I'd have to pay for ammo as well obviously.

I have a female ENFJ friend who wants to go with me; she tends to be dedicated in what she does (she's done martial arts for years and competes). She's interested in seeing what it's like. Yes, all we need is the convertible and we can do our Thelma & Louise run...

There's a chance I'll get frustrated with the experience and not continue very long (or maybe I'll love it? who knows), but I thought it an experience worth having. I did have an archery set when I was young and enjoyed shooting, but didn't persist with it once I got in high school.

My sustained hobbies: fishing, gardening, hunting, various card games, and science.
at least for a few weeks before I lose all interest and motivation then move onto something new. :p
Maybe you should look into things that are more integrative than repetitive, change your hobby heuristic.

I've been into photography, collecting a bunch of stuff, weaving, carving, video games, puzzles... all too repetitive. At one point I'd learned the common and scientific names for every bird, mammal, tree, shrub, reptile, amphibian, and fish in my state, along with a few grasses and orientals. (Including birds is cheating somewhat since their common names are standardized and scientific names weren't taught). Their ecology and life histories were cool, but it became too predictable. Same with anatomy and physiology.

Then I discovered systems theory, game theory, agency, and complexity. Following that I got more into testing myself and others for experience and entertainment (including a bunch of bad ideas, taboo/violent/sexual/occult/criminal), concluding with the urge to teach and help others, and decided to turn this hobby into a career. Leading people to accomplish something is what I now live for. Everything prior to this was self-serving and narcissistic. Why be the star when you can transform others into something much greater? My self-control has also improved, now knowing just how deep that rabbit hole goes and what I'm capable of in terms of empathy.

This process has been both catalyzed and inhibited by mental health issues. I'm currently back on an upswing digging out of the rabbit hole. A few weeks? Maybe you share some of my struggles.

My hobbies are anything and everything I want to learn about.
Currently I'm reading about drugs a lot. I'm also dabbling in magic, new age philosophy, and chronic masturbation.

I used to write music, but the need for performing in front of people causing me extreme anxiety, I dropped it. Playing bass was my thing. Poppin and Slappin. Playing eastern inspired music. If I buy a new amp I would be forced to get into it again. Perhaps worth investing again.

Other than the things listed above. I do a lot of meditating, listening to and analyzing music, getting high, reading this forum, ingaging in mystical thinking, and speaking in tongues without an interpreter. Dat rich inner life.

But shouldn't those people then dedicate their life to helping others reach potential rather than be the great star? And then the people they help be great, shouldn't they actually be helping people instead of being great?

My thoughts on that are:

1. That's their choice
2. Star-starters are probably rare
3. Too many star-starters = a cosmic circle-jerk and no greatness
