Not bull. Maybe aye-ayes (look them up in wikipedia).

...when I think about it, aye-ayes are somewhat suitable. I'm voting 'other', mostly because I like them.

I still think it's cheetah, lack of flight kind of sucks though, eagle might fit well.

Re: Waht animal type is the INTP?

I think the bull is too down to earth, and the eagle/hawk are too assertive. A Phoenix is entirely fictional so it's behavioral traits are entirely speculative. I voted owl because they traditionally symbolize wisdom. They also symbolize death and destruction but hey that's kind of cool too.

INTP's typically can foresee problems, peoples actions, and consequences in the future. Eagles have the exceptional eyesight.

When I created my handle, I used the first word that came to mind.

I think they're best represented as a small cat, maybe a housecat. Here's a bunch of INTP-esque cat characteristics.

content to take "catnaps" most of the day
sometimes affectionate with those they are closest to
friendly one minute, standoffish the next
independent
intelligent

and those aye-aye pictures are oddly endearing.

Think about it this way: If there was to be a children's movie with talking animals, and one of the characters was an INTP, what would that character be? An owl!

Cat is pretty good, but I think they're more INTJ. Though cats are always watching and observing, they also always appear to be scheming. The owl just reacts immediately to a slight movement, the cat stalks and traps.

I take mild offence at the Cat or Lion portrayal. I consider this a Fraudian (Freud + Guardian SJ) misrepresentation. The Cat I have allocated as ISFP.
The Weasel would be a variant of ENFP.

They are not Judgers though, Cats, Lions, Genets, Weasels etc.

People don't necessarily like others who think and act differently, especially when they think and act different to them. I don't doubt that if given a choice, many people would want to get rid of annoying INTP's.

I would consider a wolf into this. INTP's aren't completely heartless. Wolves group together as a family. Small groups. They are only affectionate with their small family and only the members of the family know about them. (Ignoreing the scenting thing) INTP's are observant right? Well a wolf is too. Patient animals on hunting their prey. They are smart and they are quiet secluded animals. Sure they are seen as mean but seriously, they are only wild.
Oh and wolves can be pretty laid back animals whenever they aren't trying to survive.

Hm, but wolves are very social and hierarchical-oriented, right? They live in packs and have strict hierarchies. I wouldn't call that something i'd like to live like...

I put Wolves down as ENFJ, the Teacher.

I do not know if I care if I right or wrong and I have changed by opinions from the original.

Wolves are (first thoughts).

Pack animals with a top dog and an appreciation for hierarchy.
Can be tamed if caught by incentives, including praise.
Lots of stamina.

Less characteristic

Playful
Aggressive

Now, I do not have any of these characteristics.
I find hierarchies almost impossible, well more than almost, as rank position does not really register for me.
Not really affected by praise, although nice, and preferable to criticism.
Hardly any stamina, although I can do resolute.

Playfulness is not a strong suit, and Artisan SP tendency as is Aggressiveness.

Re: Waht animal type is the INTP?

Extra justification or not for a Wolf as ENFJ. There may be justification of allocating Wolf to ENTJ and putting Beaver down as ENFJ ???

SJ are the Guardians, A Tamed Wolf or Dog ISTJ is one of these.

NT is a Rational like the INTP Eagles

NF is an Idealist. I am not so sure that Wolves are after soulmates, more like a Helpmate, so Wolf could be wrongly allocated ???

ENFJ typical jobs are:

entertainer
recruiter
artist
newscaster
writer/journalist
recreation director
librarian
facilitator
politician
psychologist
housing director
career counselor
sales trainer
travel agent
program designer
corporate/team trainer
child welfare worker

As an INFP/INTP I have trouble with Wolves as their Judgement role is too quick and they can seem a bit heavy and rigid. Too much, if I know them well enough.

A ENFJ/ENTJ I ahve aloocated as Beaver and these hard working people come across as damn Blockheads rushing around without thinking.

Re: Waht animal type is the INTP?

Last thoughts

Henry Haller came from Academia:

Der Steppenwolf is the tenth novel by Hermann Hesse, combining autobiographical and fantastic elements. Released in 1927 and named after the lonesome wolf of the steppes, or coyote, the book in large part reflects a profound crisis in Hesse's spiritual world in the 1920s.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steppenwolf_%28novel%29

The book is presented as a manuscript by its protagonist, a middle-aged man named Harry Haller (who has the same initials as Hesse himself, a recurring device in his books), who leaves it to a chance acquaintance, the nephew of his landlady. The acquaintance adds a short preface of his own and then has the manuscript published. The title of this "real" book-in-the-book is Harry Haller's Records (For Madmen Only).
As it begins, the hero is beset with reflections on his being ill-suited for the world of "everybody", the regular people. In his aimless wanderings about the city he encounters a person carrying an advertisement for a "magic theater", who gives him a small book, Treatise on the Steppenwolf. This treatise is cited in full in the novel's text (another level of self-reference) as Harry reads it. The pamphlet addresses Harry by name and seems to describe him perfectly, as a man who believes himself to be of two natures: one "high", spiritual and "human"; while the other is "low", animal-like, a "wolf of the Steppes". This man is entangled in an irresolvable struggle, never content with either nature because he cannot see beyond this self made construct. The pamphlet gives an explanation of the multifaceted and indefinable nature of every man's soul, which Harry is either unable or unwilling to recognize.
The next day Harry meets a former academic friend who invites Harry to his home. While there Harry both becomes disgusted by the nationalistic mentality of his friend, and offends the man by criticizing his wife's picture of Goethe (a figure Harry later dreams about), thus cementing his belief that he is not fit for the society of other men. Trying to postpone returning home where he plans to commit suicide, Harry chances upon a young woman in a dance hall, Hermine, who recognizes his desperate condition very quickly.

Re: Waht animal type is the INTP?

I think I figured it out... INTPs are like wombats. We aren't joiners, so we end up spending the bulk of our time by ourselves. We are highly intelligent, but often overlooked in preference to the stupid, but charming koala. If we spend too much time with people, we can get grumpy and accidentally hurt people we like. If placed in an enclosure, we will escape.

turtle, man. like INTPs they are kind of slow when out of their element, but excellent at that to which they are naturally suited. the ability of the turtle to retract into it's shell mirrors the INTP ability to retreat into their own thoughts. they are both also few in number.

oh how I miss Perseus.... :(

welcome Malcolm! would you like to be our new Perseus? the job requirements are:

  1. Be absolutely crazy
  2. Come up with a metaphorical (possibly animal-based) naming system for all the types.
  3. Use your terms with disregard to the actual four-letter codes. When people whine about not understanding what type the "Wolf" is, wait 48 hours and then begrudingly explain that they're ESTJ.
  4. more crazy!

Hmm, I'm not sure on what specific animal would have the most INTP-like characteristics, but I've always known that if I could be reborn as an animal other than a human it would be an eagle. To be almost completely independent, effortlessly soaring above and observing, doing as I pleased with no fear of any natural predators (except humans I guess) is bliss as I see it.

perhaps INTP's are not like other animals, that is what makes us so rare and spectacular. Even on this forum it appears the only thing a majority have in common is crazy(or close) and an embrace of it. Also a love of ideas, but I may be wrong. Other than that, we seem to each be our own person, with few similar traits.

Even aye-ayes look like a failed bat/rat/climby-thing hybrid that got tossed out and managed to survive

I liked the idea of the wombat :D Wombats are awesome but bad-tempered. Going too close to a wombat (invade its personal space) would get it very defensive. They only like their carers and a small number of other wombats. Well actually I only wanted to say they are completely awesome, but turtle is probably an INTP.

And I find a bat eerily accurate, it's always been one of my favourite animals. Plus, we get echolocation and flight. :D

a flying turtle then. a bat's blind personality is good. but its too socially active. its too scheduled(nightflyers). and most of all, too aggressively scary.

Aggressively scary? Really? Really?

They're adorable... True about the social part, though. But night-flyers is applicable to most of us.
And I still think echolocation is a good metaphor for intuition.

After doing some in-depth research it seems that bats really are extremely social animals... which disqualifies them from being a INTP totem animal. Instead the turtle seems like a good idea.

Turtles work i suppose, but i think turtles are slow and methodical, which doesn't quite fit... Turtles seem to fit ISTJ's better than INTP's.

IMO owls match better than turtles.

Ravens seem to work better, they are extremely intelligent, very adaptable, not especially social, have a slightly negative connotation, and are creators.

(I also don't think it is a coincidence that there are 4 Raven smileys)

A couple more candidates:

Snow leopards
Independent, Rare, Intelligent, predatory, quiet, contained, (and they are devastatingly beautiful)
stephen-oachs-pic-of-the-year-20082.jpg
aside from Lions, i think Cats in general seem to fit rather well. :cat:

Arctic Foxes (or other foxes)
Independent, adaptable, wary, insulated, sly. However whether or not we want to call INTP's "sly" is debatable, because of our general abhorrence of lies, but still, i think it pertains.

Ravens seem to work better, they are extremely intelligent, very adaptable, not especially social, have a slightly negative connotation, and are creators.

(I also don't think it is a coincidence that there are 4 Raven smileys)

A couple more candidates:

Snow leopards
Independent, Rare, Intelligent, predatory, quiet, contained, (and they are devastatingly beautiful)

aside from Lions, i think Cats in general seem to fit rather well. :cat:

Arctic Foxes (or other foxes)
Independent, adaptable, wary, insulated, sly. However whether or not we want to call INTP's "sly" is debatable, because of our general abhorrence of lies, but still, i think it pertains.
