Is anyone else here fascinated by severe storms? We just had a huge storm (tornadoes, hail, 80+ mph winds) and I ended up standing outside in the rain watching it. Of course, my mom forced me to come in when she realized what I was doing, but I did end up being in 79 mph winds.

Something about storms is just really interesting to me. Wind and lightning are especially cool. If I didn't love where I live so much I'd move somewhere that has storms like this all the time.

Does anyone else enjoy storms?

You in Tennesse?

When I lived in south Texas as a child, my family rode out a few hurricanes and I found the experience thrilling but as a child I wasn't allowed to really watch what was going on. When I moved to NC, hurricane Fran ran right through my town. I sat out on the stoop of my apartment drinking beer for hours watching trees sway (and sometimes snap). It was dark but ambient light allowed for some visability. When the wind blew the rain straight into my face, I got up and went to bed. But it was fun for me. Storms are great unless they snap my power lines.

I love severe storms, in fact I always wanted to be a tornado chaser before it became popular. My favorite times of year are during the seasonal changes in the spring and in the fall where there is a good chance for storms to generate. I love the sky, the wind, the weather, the onslaught of the rain.

When I was young, I would go out when I knew a storm was coming and I would climb a tree and sway in the wind, feeling the storm blow in. (I guess that was a little dangerous, but if I saw lightning I would find a safer place.)

When I was a teen, I went to Ohio to help as a camp counselor and there was a HUGE storm in the hills and I just laid there looking up in the grass as the clouds swirled around and it poured what felt like tons of rain. I was soaked but happy.

I still love the thought of all that and when a storm comes in, I'll stand where I can to watch. I feel very alive in the natural energy and all my senses are completely keyed up. My only issue is that I don't want to be at risk of taking property loss by having a storm destroy something... so while I'd love to visit Tornado Alley and chase storms, I don't really want to live there.

i love storms..
nature seems so powerful and human so small. it's like nature sometimes gets so mad and wants to blow away everything. it's kind of beautiful.
i enjoy watching storms.

I love watching storms! Almost got struck by lightning once but luckily it hit the house instead...didn't detour me from going out again. :D

i love storms as well. i was in western florida when katrina was all the rage, and i loved being outside in all of that weather. i also like being outdoors in dark, dreary, rainy weather in general because no one else goes outside, and i can be alone in it all :) i savor those days

I have always loved storms and found them beautiful. I am content to be in the presence of a storm, typically staying on the porch as it passes.

OP, I'm in the same state as you but I only got a little of the storm. I think it's pretty much over now.

I like watching them, and even being out in them, but I hate what rain does to the outdoors after it's gone. I prefer being in dry, warm weather where the ground isn't slippery and spongy and everything isn't so dark from the rain. I tend to become a bit depressed after a long rain, even though it does have a peaceful quality to it.

I guess I just love the shadows the sun casts on things, and a nice dry ground to walk on. I miss those things when it rains.

I heartedly recommend being in a tornado.
I have survived three close encounters with tornadoes
Of course, being in Oklahoma, that's about average.

The last one was perhaps
the most beautiful thing I have ever seen,
It had just come off Lake Hefner
It was clean, no dirt or dust in it
It was late afternoon and the sun was shining thru it
creating a multitude of weird rainbows
It was a gigantic swirling crystal chandelier
reaching down to greet me
A power child in quest of a friend,
In innocence not realizing that,
I was too fragile a friend to survive its embrace
I stayed out, in IT, way too long...

I also love storms. Property damage sucks, but I even enjoyed the storm induced blackouts from my childhood. Cleaning up a flooded basement is no fun, but I can't say that I didn't enjoy the weather that caused it.

They were making fun of me at work yesterday for jumping up and squealing when I heard the rain pounding on the roof... it's fascinating. It makes you seem so small...

Hail is ok when you have an old car and a 12 year old roof (don't much care about a few dings on my car, would love a new, free roof. ;)).

I like storms, especially when it's all windy at night, and I can hear the rain. I annoy the rest of my family by opening all my windows, which makes the house all cold and noisy, especially in the middle of the night and the wind's all loud.

I like thunderstorms a lot too, but they don't tend to happen in the middle of the day around where I live, and they're usually late at night so rather than actually going outside I have to just look out my window and watch them.

Yes! I love storms. I used to live in Kansas (tornado alley), and my whole family used sit in the open garage and watch the storms rage. It really helps that the land is flat enough to see several miles away. I also remember that once a tornado got close enough to my house that we had to stay in the basement for a few hours. Everyone was nervous, my sister was crying, and I had a huge grin on my face, just visualizing the tornado. Blackouts were great too, just wandering around with a kerosene lamp in my hand, seeing my house in a whole new way. I've also been hit by a mild hurricane (no damage to the house) and I just spent the entire time watching the storm.

I also particularly love playing dark classical music on the piano while watching thunderstorms. It's a beautiful atmosphere.

Thunder, rain, wind. I love it all. The sounds from it are great.

One of the best nights of my life was when I snuck out of the house during a thunder storm. Hung out with a girl, both of us just listening to the thunders and trying to figure out which direction / how far away it was. (When the storm ended we went skinny dipping.)

I haven't ever really been in a storm and I'm somewhat envious. I have earthquakes to make me feel small, but those are rarely interesting.

I live in Arizona and we get some pretty intense monsoons that come through the summer and early fall. I had lived in the foothills and we could see for probably twenty miles to the south. Watching lightening storms there was just breathtaking. Once or twice the monsoon got so intense that you literally couldn't see past 4ft or so. When I graduated it was raining fairly hard and was bitterly cold. Everyone else whined about it, but I was thilled :D

There are also few things more enjoyable than dancing out in the rain with some of your more eccentric, ADD friends.

Hahaha! I got my new free roof last year thanks to hail. And a new west side wall as well.

Oh yea, i concur!
I mean, even though i never have been in a real strong storm, anything like a hurricane or so (they are pretty rare here in Europe) i still like storm, wind, rain...
As i was in Spain last month at my parents' there was some massive rain (as is normal, they seldomly have rain, but when they have, it's much) and i had to feed the horses and such and i had so much fun jumping around in the rain! Haha, even the dog thought i was crazy. The first time i ran into the rain the dog happily came with me, then outside, noticing it raining strongly, stared at me, and frantically ran back under the roof of the stable and tried to get off the water. :D

I also love storms. The rain, the incessant pounding that is like background noise, the howling and the thunder. And everyone disappears, everyone hides. The solitude and magnificence of nature. And my senses are heightened, fully aroused. Is there a better thing than the smell of wet earth?

*sigh* I miss a good storm. It's been a while.

I enjoy severe storms greatly. I love to stand outside and let the rain soak me to the bone. If it was cold too, it would be a dream come true ~
