Hi all,

I'm still really quite new to this typology stuff, so I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense at all. But for the last couple of days I've been thinking about tidyness, and how it relates to the Jungian functions.

Now, originally when I was first looking into this typology stuff, I was under the false impression that J/P was related to how tidy someone was. However, after reading about the Jungian functions, my understanding is that J/P is less important by themselves, but more on how they relate to which functions you rely on.

So, as a sort-of experiment, I've been looking at people who I've identified xxxJ's, and seeing how tidy they are, and figuring out how this could relate to the functions. This is what I've observed:
Flatmate 1 (INTJ, Ni-Te) - Not tidy at all. His room as always a mess, and generally makes a huge mess of the flat in general.
Flatmate 2 (ISTJ, Si-Te) - Keeps her own room tidy, but does not care at all about the mess that occurs in the external world. This can go to the extreme of her vaccuming herself a path to the fridge, while the rest of the flat is a huge mess.
Friend/Mother (ESFJ Fe-Si) - Everything, everywhere must be tidy at all times. If there is a mess it must be cleaned up. They don't generally understand how people can stand living in messes.

So, my theory is that those with a strong Si must have a clean environment in order to be happy. Combine that with a strong Fe, ESFJ's (and possibly ISFJ's) try to clean up every possible mess to make everyone else happy as well.

Also, if my theory is correct, how could this relate to INTP's who also have Fe and Si in their functional stack, but on the lower end?

I bet most of the people on the forum are messy.

messy and tidy are relative.

when my place is "messy", i still know where everything is.

therefore, I put it to people that "messy" situations only appear so to people who cannot comprehend them.

to quote some dude who was quoted by another dude who wrote a script that quoted someone else and I saw it in a movie - brilliant men are often untidy. Which btw only makes sense from an unbrilliant point of view :)

Interesting observations... I dated an ISFJ and she was a neat freak! I liked it but it also drove me up the wall....

I go through stages, let it get messy then go nuts cleaning, I like clean environments when working, but they don't stay clean for long if I'm working... I too know where things are if I need them. there is method in my madness so to speak.

ENTP is my type so you can add more info to your dataset. I generally didn't notice the "obvious mess" when I was with the ISFJ, nor did I really care to, there are more important things in life.... like being brilliant!

When I was younger I was always messy, as is my INTP son presently. As an adult I can be quite tidy, because I've learned the value of it. At work I know a lot of tidy types, namely ISTJ's. Most of them are, but one has quite a messy cube, and though he says he needs to tidy up so far I haven't seen it. So I'd say this is something that can be driven both from personality and type.

J's seem much more tidy than P's if you ask me.
Might just be a wrong observation tho.

Also, I don't mind an absolute mess. It keeps other people away and suits me fine. I typically can find my stuff fast. (Everything is where I last used it, so most of the useful stuff is centered around my fave spots.)

The question is though, while you might know where everything is, do you see your place as "messy"? Personally, 90% of the time, my place is without a doubt messy, but there are usually more important things to worry about. Unless I start cleaning as a form of procrastination.....

That sounds very similar to me. I generally start off with good intentions of trying to keep an environment clean, however as I actually start working, I find that cleaning takes a lower priority. Then their comes a point where I just start cleaning like mad, and then the cycle repeats itself.

"There's a method to my madness". That is my usual response to people who tell me to clean up my desk.

I oscillate from tidy to messy and when it gets too much back to tidy which I really enjoy, but I get too busy to put things away in the right place (or they don't yet have a right place) and it can get very very bad................ I just hate housework. I always know exactly what needs to be done but just don't prioritise my time to do a job that very soon needs doing AGAIN.

At work I am pretty much the same. But when I file things I am absolutely pedantic about the file structure, and making sure it is all done properly.

Meanwhile my husband who likes everything to look neat all the time will just dump all the cutlery in a jumble into the divided cutlery drawer and put plates and cups in any random cupboard that is nearest - and nothing can be found for days!

So there is tidy and ordered - and they can come on their own to create a neat disordered person or an ordered messy person or together they create a neat freak!!

Ohhh yesss... I'm absolutely anal retentive about file structure; everything must be in its place.
