I have always been plagued by the sensation that someone is watching me (and yes sometimes it took the form of drug-induced paranoia). That is to say that often my life seemed to take on a surreal aspect as if I was merely some sort of clown performing for some type of invisible audience, a cloud of silent witnesses.
Later in life I discovered that this imaginary audience was a facet of adolescent development, so like why hasn't it gone away?

Anyone else have a similar experience? Any thoughts?

This is the intro. of an article on the subject (link below)

The long-standing and often-cited theory of adolescent egocentrism (Elkind, 1967) delineates two distinct but related ideation patterns--the imaginary audience and the personal fable. The imaginary audience refers to adolescents' tendency to believe that others are always watching and evaluating them; the personal fable refers to the belief that the self is unique, invulnerable, and omnipotent. The patterns of thinking reflected by both constructs seem to capture and explain feelings and behaviors typically associated with early adolescence, such as self-consciousness, conformity to peer group norms, and risk-taking. Further, they have substantial intuitive appeal.

William Shakespeare - All the world's a stage (from As You Like It 2/7)

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything

I've felt that way before, and yet I disagree. If there were someone watching this macabre puppet show, it would make much more sense, it could even be acceptable in spite of all. But it is much more surreal and disturbing the idea that there is no one watching and there is no plot or direction, complete absurdity...

(can't read that article just now, too long)

Actually, I think it would be egotistical of anyone to think others are watching us.

I call that paranoia, and that started from "The Truman Show". As a little boy, growing in a post-communist country, it made a truly remarkable impression on me. I always feel myself watched by cameras and my apartment tapped (since i don't leave my house often). Dunno, maybe the fact that i always felt different (not better, not worse) than others gave me wild ideas. Like i'm an experiment, alien hybrid (Long live X-files) and someone was always watching me. And because my father left me when i was very little, I always felt protected by that/those entities who "watched over me". I have a very big and wonderful imagination. :)

I don't feel like I'm in front of an audience as much as I feel alone and hoodwinked. It sometimes feels like I'm interacting with imaginary people and things, and I'm the one being a fool.

In one of Gaiman's comic books (The Books of Magic I) There's a brief conversation between the boy (who is walking through the universe purely as an observer, in some special way) and a sage.

Sage: Are you listening, boy?"
Boy: Can you see me?
Sage: "No, of course I can't see you. Or hear you either, for that matter. But you ought to be here at this time, or so my spells have said."

^ The whole idea of people watching, without us ever being able to tell (except with magic) is so very interesting. Arthur C. Clarke also wrote a book (I think it's called "The Light of Other Days") about a piece of technology that could look back in time. (It could also look presently in time- the distance it could look was measured in lightyears, and for every lightyear of distance attainted they could also look one year back, from the spot the machine was.)

Magic or technology, someone might be looking at my life! So sometimes I give narration. Ya know, when I'm alone, I just talk about what's on my mind. It's also amazing therapeutic.

It's only paranoia if they aren't actually watching and given the number of times one is tracked via data we scatter about simply living or are simply caught on a random camera.......

Haha. So despite my biological age I can truthfully claim to be adolescent.

I thought the 'audience' thing was a game I played with myself... splitting my mind into viewer and viewed.

I just like to imagine an audience perspective and then modify my behaviour to try on different skins. It amuses me.

I can't get an accurate view of my real self from outside, but I can exercise certain characters. I can pretend to be things I'd wish to be, but don't think I can take these aspirations seriously, so set up the imaginary audience to keep things in perspective. I think I do it when I need to make fun of myself and there's just no one else around who'd 'get it'.

And sometimes I imbue aspects of my environment with sentience so that I can dialogue with them.

I mean I am entirely comfortable finding 'humanity' in the least obvious places. Except it isn't human.

I don't view these dialogues as being with 'pets'. I am the equal of all things in the universe.

I should start speaking in third person. So I provide narration to my invisible observers, and become one of them...

Wasn't there a guy here who always spoke in third person? And in a nearly incomprehensible manner? something about "like this the thinking it the human it the writing"

I have good reason to be paranoid, but I'm only paranoid when in large crowds...not when on this forum....

Although...

I do often feel as though people are reading my posts while I'm writing them....

Which is why I press enter so often.....

There are many people watching me. All the time. I can hear them speaking into my mind and its frustrating, but can also be very hilarious. Their names are: Me, myself, and I.

One of them is constantly telling me that I and every one of my efforts are failures and that my continued existence is a 'Poor Investment Of The Earth's Oxygen Supply'. She has a habit of ambushing me at the most strange and inopportune moments, derailing what was originally an interesting and entertaining train of thought into a horrendous wreck. Also has habit of taking on multiple voices to support her case and even lambastes her own arguments in order to show the futility of my thought.

I usually then tell her that I do not care and that she should be silent.

The INTP, Yozuki's naughty OCD. Too much the telling and the performing and the controlling and the gnashing of the teeth. The driving the crazy activity, the performing the calmness, the repeating the lacking.

Too much the dizzying.

SILENT VOICES SOUND THE SAME

There's a couple of books you might like to read (if you have not already)
"I'm OK, You're Ok" and "Games People Play"
they're old but provide (perhaps ?) a useful upgrade to current internal models..

Well, sometimes I'll find myself imagining..."if so-and-so could see this, they would think..." .

The "so-and-so" is a famous historical figure...like one of the (American) founding fathers or a famous inventor. I just think its fun to imagine what people would think and say about something. Like this forum for instance...hmmm.....

Oh, and I also do that narration thing too.

I do this, except with fictional characters. I'll think something like "if Xena were here , she'd say..."

Oddly enough, that is one of the best Creative Problem Solving techniques.

A group will get together and brainstorm possible solutions to a problem by asking things like
How would Spiderman solve this Problem? or How would the X-men solve this problem? etc.
It is remarkably efficient in coming up with new and novel ideas...

EDIT: New and Novel?, a bit redundant, say what...

Think of it this way. Your carbon dioxide output is helping plants everywhere you go, and plants combat excessive greenhouse gases.
