Every one knows that Descartes was an INTP. However one particular member, *glares*, seems to think he was an INTJ. (As suggested in another thread)

Discuss.

I'm no expert, but the internet consensus seems to favor the idea of Descartes being an INTP. I've yet to see one source (other than said member), favor anything otherwise.

a random find: http://www.zazzle.com/famous_intps_architect_shirt-235255973688318783

it's an INTP t-shirt! It features famous alleged INTPs, including Descartes. Also interestingly enough, it features the names of John Travolta and Dustin Hoffman (one of my favorite actors). Dustin Hoffman being an INTP makes sense to me, but not so much John Travolta..

have all of these famous people actually taken a test? are functions that black and white? it seems to me anyone could find proof of any type in everyone they analyze. name dropping seems to be a way to say "my personality type is better then yours."

Okay. SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!? T_______T

I was looking at a site for INTJ quotes, and it was there. So sue me.

No one but Descartes himself knows whether or not he's an INTJ or an INTP. I just liked the quote, and the 'INTJ claim' was already there, I did not insert it myself.

In fact, I'm not going to debate you over it. I won't change my sig either (though I wouldn't put it past you to convince lor or somebody to change it with admin powerz).

My master plan: Wait for you to lose interest.

*shrug* It's possible, despite it's improbability. I'm just staying on my toes. If my sig gets changed to 'Wisp was here and Descartes was and INTP' then I will be prepared.

I also wouldn't put it past him to hack my account. *paranoid*

Oh, and I actually have a very good opinion of Wisp, I'm not accusing him of anything (yet).

Then why did you not also put 'INTJ' between quotation marks when you wrote it in your signature? :D

I do agree that it's a fine quote, though.

This is a good example of an INTJ sticking to their guns, despite the evidence.

I just copy-pasted the line. The "Rene Descartes, INTJ" was already there. I saw no point in removing it since I had been searching for INTJ quotes.

I have been given no evidence thus far...

I'm waiting for evidence to support any assessment of his personality, apart from websites merely claiming it.

edit: ahh, lol sugarpop slipped in before me. Well... here ya go :D

[we need a good eye rolling emoticon]

haha, this might just be the most ridiculous thing I think I've seen here. I'd almost be upset about the possibility of people ganging up on and chasing away the non-INTP like at INTPc, if wisp and kia didn't know each other outside of this place.

Anyway, I would actually be inclined to wonder whether or not he's an INTP, based on what I've seen of his Meditations. They're really one large appeal to God to justify Science, which I'm sure a solid 88% of you hate the idea of, and he equivocates the meanings of "thinking thing" within the first couple of pages. The only thing he really "shows" (that is, if you believe his premise up to that point, that one must exist in order to think) is that he is capable of believing things, which requires thought, and then suddenly asks "but what is a thinking thing? It is a thing that doubts, understands, [conceives], affirms, denies, wills, refuses; that imagines also, and perceives...." and goes from there.

From what I've seen, INTPs don't usually mess their terms up like that, uneless he did it on purpose thinking that no one would notice, since they usually think with concepts rather than words. I'd be willing to bet that sites like those knew the phrase "cogito, ergo sum" and said "hey... that seems to sum up INTPs pretty well. If he thought that (since most peoeple don't know the context in which he said it, I get the feeling that they think he meant something along the lines of "thinking is the most important part of life" sometimes), he probably was one." Then they stick his name up as a famous INTP, and people run with it.

He may have been one, and he may not have been one... but why would you use practically homemade MBTI sites to type someone when you could read something he wrote and analyze it yourself?

If anyone has any doubts that he was INTP after watching this, I don't know what else to say other than he spent his life doubting everything and didn't do much of anything besides thinking and sleeping.

(After reading biographies and the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, my best guess is that he was INTP as well. But I don't care enough to make an argument for it.)

I'm not trying to debate it. Here's the site I got it from http://www.keirsey.com/rational_quotes.aspx

I just happened to trust the Keirsey site more than the homemade ones. I don't intend to make an argument of it and I never did.

lol, fear not. I'll have my revenge tomorrow. I'd pick on him except that I know enough to do it in an arena that favors me.

In my view, it's much less about whether or not Descartes himself was really an INTP (who knows anyway, right?), but more a matter of his philosophy and methodology being incredibly Ti-ish.

Indeed it would make us better than everyone else since Descartes was basically the most intelligent person to ever walk the earth

And of course god is an INTP, would you not say god could be considered an architect?
Of course he isn't real though :D

can you justify the "sensing" part of that for gathering information?

Lol he is definitely introverted, he doesnt make very many appearances does he, and he would have created a world where he could be with the people he made if he were extroverted. T instead of F because if he was emotionally driven he would probably answer peoples prayers. And P instead of J because he takes no part in his plan, he created it and granted it freedom.

All of this is just dribble though... god..pff

That was a good read. Man I wish I had been around to participate in that discussion.
