so mainly i'm making this thread for myself, but i figure it'd be nice to have one collective thread where people can post saying "hook me up with some xxxx" and people can reply with whatever it is. knawmean?

anyway, i'm in need of new musics. i'm pretty open to whatever, but i really can't stand noise or anything remotely metal/"core" sounding. i'm a big fan of melody, simplicity, riffs, and pretty vocals. i guess a lot of what i listen to can be classified as indie, but again, i'll go for pretty close to anything (including, but not limited to, rap, non-twangy-bluegrass-esq. country, pop, techno/dance, classical, and whatever else floats yer boat.)

basically i wanna hear stuff that stands out. i don't like anything generic. some recent favorite artists include: mother mother, sufjan stevens, cake, cocorosie, and jumbling towers. if you haven't heard of any of these, look them up. they're outstanding.

so, yeah. RECOMMEND ME SHIT. (it'd be dynamite if you could post album names too.)

and anyone else is free to request. be as vague or specific as you want.

(if a thread like this already exists... yeah, sorry, i'm an asshole.)

I'm not familiar with any of the bands you mentioned, and "Melody, simplicity, riffs, and pretty vocals" is not exactly my thing, but if you're absolutely open to anything...

First off, Love - Forever Changes is more or less the album, regardless of category.
YouTube- Love - The Red Telephone

Chroma Key - You Go Now
YouTube- Chroma Key - When You Drive

Slowdive - Souvlaki
YouTube- Slowdive - Sing

Obvious recommendations I shouldn't even need to name: Radiohead, Arcade Fire.

I don't really need general recommendations myself, as I already have tons of music to listen to and I know where to find more recommendations if I need to. But what I'm having trouble to find is good writing music.

What I find works best for writing is something dark and/or melancholic that's ambient but more abrasive than actual ambient music. Vocals are fine, but they shouldn't be distracting and they shouldn't be the focus of the music. Nonsensical/indecipherable/minimal lyrics are preferable.

Good examples of what I'm looking for: Radiohead - Kid A, Chroma Key - Graveyard Mountain Home, This Empty Flow - Magenta Skyline, Cocteau Twins - Treasure.

Being one of the few hip-hop fans around here, I'm obligated to advocate for my own preference of music. Here is some stuff I've had decent luck getting non-rap aficionado's to give the thumbs up to (some people may recognize some of this from other posts of mine):

Eyedea and Abilities:

Atmosphere:

El-P

Jedi Mind Tricks

Cage

I'm trying to expand my musical repertoire. Can anyone give me some good electronica? bluegrass?

[edit: realized there already was a thread about that]
