Heres the deal. Melkor is a bit of a loser, in that, he's really not very musically inclined. Granted, he can appreciate it, be moved by it,ponder/ mentally compose it, but he's never really been the sort to dedicate himself to any bands/ genre. I'm certain I could, but as most of my close friends don't, I never have. Recently I bought an Ipod though, so.... This is the deal. I'm open to any and all suggestions you lovely people have concerning musical interests. Be specific please.:P

Die Ärzte!
Wonderful lyrics. That is, if you can understand them. Haha.

As for English(language) bands: Nirvana, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, etc are all good places to start.

If you want popular (English)music of today, then I can't help you much.

I like to listen to everything that sounds good to me. I don't care what genre it is. The only music I really don't like is country music.

Voxtrot, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, LCD Soundsystem (get the album Sound of Silver), Cloud Cult (Get the album 'Advice From The Happy Hippopotamus', it's a masterpiece). If you like, check my last.fm for more ideas...I'm kind of obsessed with music.

Why did you buy an ipod in the first place?

I was once like you are now (without the loser part). Find a song / band that you like, and then find out about similar ones. And so on and so forth. Altough some bands are more consistent than others. I try to go at it on a song-by-song basis. Beware of genres. They're rarely clear cut, and a lot of good things get lost on the gray areas.

Also following random recommendations, or downloading / buying something out of the blue sometimes brings quite unexpected surprises. For this purpose, compilation albums can be helpful. Of course, recommendations are tricky, most people have very particular tastes... it's very hard to find a person that you can trust knows your musical taste.

Anyway, this is all made much easier now thanks to things like torrents and last.fm

I support most of the bands already stated.
Some variety off the top of my head:
Interpol
Ladytron
The New Pornographers
Radiohead
Metric

music is something of a difficulty in that no one has the exact same taste. tekton does it justice though, just start at what you already like, however small that selection may be, and you will inevitably expand from there. if you really want suggestions:

POP: tears for fears, massive attack
ELECTRONIC: daft punk, juno reactor, massive attack(mezzanine), new order
ROCK: sum 41, blink 182, rage against the machine, rancid, sublime

thats all i got off the top of my head, as i dont have my iPod right now

Not relaxing music, but when you're walking around you'll want something that your feet can move to, although the last three groups have tiresome lyrics that are really only relevant to Americas.

Speaking of relaxing music,

I forgot to mention some reggae! Specifically Bob Marley.

Also, if anyone is into foreign language music like me, you might enjoy some German reggae, such as Peter Fox and Seeed. :D
Peter Fox is great, listen to "Haus am See" (House on/at the Lake)

Thou shalt listen to Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd shalt thou listen to. Thou shalt listen to Pink Floyd forthwith and with much earnestness.

So sayeth the Lord Noddy.

And thy Lord also enjoyeth Metallica, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, Van Halen, or any musician who dost not like Jesus.

:evil::evil::evil::evil: <---- these bands are rated five little devil heads

If thou dost not like any of these bands, thou shalt keep thy opinion to thyself, lest you be cast into an eternal pit of torment.

Amen.

My great dedication to music started when my ears were first brought to awareness of a band called Dream Theater, so try that. (The song was Pull Me Under)

My first venture into musical-obession-hood was due to a mixture sent to me by a friend, featuring Dream Theater (this song was one of them), Porcupine Tree, Opeth, and others.

That's when I realized that most of the music I liked before that time was pure crap. My tastes have vastly expanded since then, and I am now a proud music snob. The above that I mentioned are still on my favorites list.

(Now what did I do with my last.fm account...? Must have misplaced it.)

I have to admit to this as well, although I eventually got bored of them.

Stream of Consciousness is still one of my most liked songs ever. DT's instrumentals are their best, IMO. Liquid Tension Experiment FTW!

I'd also like to add Depeche Mode and The Cure to my previous list.

You haven't mentioned what you're interested in, so my suggestion would be to sample a variety of things. It's a good idea to keep an open mind and then narrow it from there. (duh...)

Some things I like:
Mastodon, NIN, Deftones, Isis, Devin Townsend, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Slayer, Ministry, A Perfect Circle, Katatonia, Neurosis, Incubus, Blind Melon, etc. etc...

Thing is, there are just so many different types of music. Morgoth, it would be good if you gave us fellow INTPs some info as to why you're even interested in music (we all listen to music for different reasons, and so we have different tastes). What music do you currently like (we do need a starting point!), and what do you dislike in music? Even just a little bit of info might make the recommendations more suitable.

Seems that Dream Theatre is official INTP iniciater in the music world. Too "sorry" my first "real" band was Led Zeppelin and I got stick in any band from 60's and 70's, what, unfortunately, left my taste very narrow for some time.

Some bands/artists:

Blues - B.B. King, Eric Clapton, John Mayall & The Bluebreakers, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson
French - Yann Tiersen (his soundtrack to Amelié is great), Nouvelle Vague
Electronic - Moby

I could recommend Tenacious D either. I think you'd like.

The band is spelled the American way, 'Theater'. It's not a huge deal, but since it's been a common misspelling in this thread by many people, I thought I'd point it out...

Okay, this is the topic matter on which I seriously question my INTPness. I disagree with about 90% of what you've all listed. I'm going to list a few, and if you guys recognize any of these, you can tell me how I am so obviously not an INTP. Not that I care. Here goes:

Bob Dylan, esp. Highway 61 Revisited
A. A. Bondy
Bright Eyes (I know I will get a heap-ton of shit on this one, but I don't care.)/ Conor Oberst
Modest Mouse (oldest stuff)
Ugly Casanova
Iggy Pop and The Stooges
Old Rolling Stones
Flaming Lips (so I agree with some of Anthile)
Sonic Youth
The Velvet Underground
Murder City Devils
Nous Sommes Loups
The Clash (London Calling)
Pixies
Nirvana (esp. Bleach and Incesticide)
Animal Collective
Neva Dinova
Classical music, esp. Chopin
At the Drive In
And you will know us by the trail of dead are good but the most obnoxious, pretentious band I have ever seen live
Johnny Cash
lots o' other.

^ IMO I don't think music taste is an indicator of type. Although it seems INTPs rarely have a narrow taste for it.

Actually, according to this exceptionally detailed description of the INTP personality type, there are some recurring preferences among INTPs. This part describes my taste in music pretty well:

Another area of interest common to INTPs, where Si has a strong influence, is Music. INTPs are usually fascinated by music and may have deep and wide-ranging tastes. Indeed, each of their three main functions (Ti, Ne, Si) plays a role in the enjoyment of music, and indeed music is a key interest for bringing out the feeling shadow of the INTP. Si itself brings a fascination for mood and atmosphere in music as well as for a strong sense of personal nostalgia. INTPs are therefore often keen on melancolic minor-key music in which an introspective and/or esoteric mood is conveyed. Equally, INTPs enjoy hearing music that they heard and enjoyed when younger (provided they can still appreciate it now) and yearn for the sense of nostalgia that it yields. INTPs are also drawn to complexly structured music, thanks to their Ti core. An appreciation of modern classical music, as well as perhaps contemporary jazz, is therefore common with them. Such music types are usually too complex to be understood after a single hearing, which hence provides excellent material for analysis, exciting the INTP no end. Once the basic developmental structure of the music has been assessed, Ne provides the impetus to derive a general meaning of the piece. What does the composer wish to convey, for example? Why was that particular development chosen? Indeed, the Ne is usually hard at work during listening sessions, trying to grasp the meanings behind the often fascinating combinations of sound-world evocations, structural developments and nostalgic impressions.
When the Ti core dominates the choice of music to listen to, the need for intellectual stimulation derived from complex structures and sounds will override concerns for cultured harmony. Hence, INTPs are often drawn to dissonance. Indeed, they may even thoroughly strive for dissonant sound worlds. When in such moods, consonant harmonies, especially of the three-chord-melody variety, are dismissed as boring and uninspired. If an INTP is forced to listen to simple harmonic music for a while, he usually can't wait to feel the relief provided by a few minutes of pure dissonance. The ideal music for the Ti core might be typically a modern symphony, with a complex, but analysable structure, with a rich and varied sound world, predominantly dissonant but with sections of melodic motifs to provide solidity. Examples of modern classical composers who particularly speak to the Ti core might be Simpson, Arnold, Holmboe, Maxwell-Davies and Shostakovich.
However, feeding the Ti core alone with music will rarely satisfy an INTP for long. Where music really inspires in when the Si function is brought into the picture. Generally, INTPs are fascinated by atmospheres evoked by music. Examples of modern classical composers whose music speaks more to the Si-melancoly through sound-world evocation might be Bax, Tavener, Pärt, Szymanowski and Rautavaara. Some elements of world-music also speak strongly to the Si-melancoly. INTPs may be interested in the Folk musics of eastern Europe and India, for example. The role played by the Si function is shared by SJ types, so that INTPs may find a common musical bond with some SJs in this area. Indeed, INTPs often feel at ease with SJs, especially their near-shadow xSFJ types. The SJ's guardian instincts usually help the INTP to feel at ease, while the tradition-based predictability of the SJ approach to life helps the INTP to know where he stands, giving him the space he needs to relax. Although the most intense communicative friendships may develop with fellow NTs, some extraverted intuitive types may overstress the INTP by being too dominant and unpredictable, extracting too much energy from the Ti core.
Ultimately, however, music forms a vital, central role in awaking the underdeveloped Fe shadow in the life of an INTP. It is undoutedly Fe that gives the INTP the life-spark to introduce a genuine sense of joy that music is experienced with. To the INTP, the role of Fe in music appreciation remains mysterious. Music forms which may be useful for awakening the shadow are expressive forms of jazz, where extraverted Feeling is central to the music-making process, as well as some expressive Folk styles (Irish for example). Examples of modern classical composers whose music may appeal to the Fe shadow of INTPs are Messiaen, Copland, Schnittke, Bartok, Vaughan-Williams and, again, Shostakovich (Noting that Fe can be expressing a range of positive or negative feelings). The music of Shostakovich is a particular favourite because, alongside its developmental structure, it also yields an immense sense of passionate tragedy which awakes the Fe-shadow together with the Si-melancoly.

yeah, I was crying when I read that Vegard, I was like: "someone understands the way I listen to music!" I had always known I listened to music based on my mood, and so I divided my music by mood, and not genres, although some genres evict a certain collective mood anyways...

oh, and great list(s) Anthile, Im pretty sure I'll use it as a map as I continue to navigate through Metal.

and as for my intro to music of a "higher level" I would have to say it was early Tears for Fears, and then Mezzanine by Massive Attack, but neither of those led anywhere. right now Im listening to Opeth, and its pretty damn good.

yeah, I was crying when I read that

I freaking cried throughout the entire description. I also wondered how in the hell that guy knew so much about me.

So, I basically disagree with 95% of the music listed here. I basically live for music that is melancholy. The more depressing, the better. But I dislike music that invades the personal space of my brain. So here are some suggestions of more mellow tunes to either thoroughly depress you, intrigue you, or provide an atmosphere conducive to deep thought (or it might just bore you, how the hell should I know?).

Intriguing:
Imogen Heap - Embers of Love
Chris Botti - All Would Envy
Enigma - Gravity of Love
Idina Menzel - Forever
Idina Menzel - If I Told You

ahh thank you SO much for this thread. I took the suggestion of Opeth, and now my musical taste has literally exploded in a million new directions.

before, I usually listened to one or two albums at a time, with a few singles i liked, but really didnt know exactly what I would get next. it was sort of whatever i had heard lately that i liked. now, if i had $300 to spend on music, i could easily spend up all of it (and i most definitely would, too). :D:D:D

Two Opeth songs I'm obsessing over right now are Black Rose Immortal and Ghost of Perdition. They're both very different from each other, but both so perfect!

Glad you've discovered them.
