So Stanford is offering these upcoming computer science classes in artificial intelligence, machine learning and databases. They're free and open to the public. I think the AI one has already had > 100,000 sign ups, and is being co-taught by one of the guys that wrote the AIMA book.

I'm not sure about the other two, but there seem to be two tracks for the AI course: basic and advanced. You can switch back and forth at any time, and the difference is basically whether you do the homework assignments and take the exams. Seems they're also going to have some kind of forum too.

So that's that. Did anyone else here sign up?

So... no one? Besides hitode-kun and I?

Course started today. Not sure if it's too late to sign up - probably. I think we were hoping to get some discussions going about it or something. Ah well.

That sounds really interesting, but my own course load really leaves little time for anything else. That's how it's like at Digipen.

Oh sweet, two more. Hitode and I had been talking about it on skype a bunch, if you guys want to get in on that. Alternatively now that the classes are going I suppose this thread could be used as a discussion place, although I'm not sure what inclination there might be for that sort of thing.

I'd mentioned possibly watching the videos together in a google hangout or tinychat (using manycam to share someone's screen, mine would be fine). Again, I'm not sure if that would a good idea or just a distraction, but it's something that occurred to me, if anyone is interested.

I'm trying to find copies of all the recommended texts to pirate as well. The DB class had four listed, I haven't checked the other two yet.

I saw your post, signed up for all 3 classes, read intp forum for a few weeks, got distracted... finally got around to create a username here and reply. Yes, I'm INTP! Hi guys, girls, and computers that might be slurping here.

These classes look so interesting but I am under employed and should be looking for a job, so it's a case of an INTP that started something, and now I'm not quite sure I will be able to keep up. I'm 7 years out of college and need to refresh my math skills. Fortunately the classes are on video to watch at any time. I do software and web development, and I really want to get into Artificial Intelligence! It might help get more work too. There are so many Indian programmers that can work for less. We have to upgrade our skills to stay ahead of them to get the higher paying jobs needed to survive in a high cost of living country.

Indian customer service jobs are soon to be outsourced... to AI. A software trained to answer customers questions, measure their emotional response, empathize without ego and give expert answers based on deep (total) knowledge. And it works for free, 24/7. There will still be someone with a job. Those that make the AI.

Exciting times!! Anyone want to start a company? :D

That would help me stay dedicated and learn faster. How do we find the meetup?

I have 6 employers and work more than 80 hours a week. I'd love to take a course, but, alas, once I factor in sleeping and eating, I don't have any time left each week.

That said, this is the future of coursework, and I recommend it to everyone. MIT and a few other places are also beginning to offer more and more classes online (though almost none of them offer this stuff for credit--but that may change in the future).
