I want to make some N friends. How do you judge whether a person is an N or an S? What observations can tip me off?

Their sense of humor is probably the biggest tell. If you notice people making jokes that you think are funny, they're probably intuitive too. I find all of my friends to be quite funny, and they all happen to be intuitive. Hmmmm!

Oh, I don't know. S-types can be pretty weird too. Especially the emos ISFPs.

I think a good indicator might be that they do non-mainstream things.

frim what little i have seen i would say the N will know or think they know something with out having the facts. they also seem to grasp large ideas better. also S seems to be more detail orientated. they will pick out the best parts of you as opposed to saying they like the whole thing.

like always i am most likely wrong.

I just want to have someone who I can talk to. I was watching family guy yesterday and I saw how Brian (INTP) was hanging out with Stewey (ENTx). I want that king of coversation. I want the kind of conversation we have here on the forum! But with people in real life. I wish I could take all you guys out to a bar and just talk and drink with you guys.

You buyin'?

I'm a funny drunk as opposed to a mean drunk so......

I'm not going out west for free drinks though.

Sense of humor might be as good an indicator as you will get.

Hmmm I'm better on the internet - I presume others are too? I don't know what would happen if we all met up in a bar, maybe all sit around thinking about what we're going to type on the INTP forum when we get home? No, I'm projecting...

I think I agree. I find both N and S humor to be funny though. It's just that the type of humor is different. S humor seems to be based more on how things look or sound funny, often using culturally shared sensory experiences as its basis. N humor is harder to put my finger on, but I know it when I'm around it. I think it's most likely to be the kind you find funny but don't know why. Like when you find yourself laughing for no obvious reason. This can make S types think you're weird.

Holy shit, people are always thinking I'm crazy for "laughing for no obvious reason". I think you have a valid point by stating that S types think you are weird if they see this nonsense laughing behavior going on. I would like to add that N types will just wonder what you were laughing at, instead of labeling you weird. Well.. now I guess I know who all the S types are now :)

You can just try to talk to people. If they will give you a solid conversation, you shouldn't worry about what letter describes them best. Also, try looking in the right places. Book clubs, science groups, philosophy clubs. I don't KNOW who all the INTP's at my boarding school are, but every friday night we have "Old Dead Greek Guys" (philosophy club), and the conversation is excellent. It isn't even structured, and we a ton of our international students go, and its very fun. We just throw out a random starting topic, say, cannibalism in Papua New Guinea, and we go, for hours, wherever it takes us. We might end cannibalism night talking about whether selling in vitro embryos should be legal.

I know it is immensely difficult for INTP's to let go of this, but you don't always have to be FULLY aware of your environment. You don't need to KNOW everything about the person you are talking to. It makes it easier to appreciate and enjoy what you are doing or talking about with them.

If they talk conceptually I lean toward them being N. If they talk about specific people and events I lean toward them being S.

Last summer a perfectly nice couple came over. Friends of my wife's. Suddenly I was left with the woman, most charming. N.g. She kept talking stories about specifics to which I could say nothing. I couldn't stand it. I had to call for my wife to rescue me. Her husband could speak closer to some concepts. I got along with him better.

Si dominants seem to tell a lot of personal stories. It's nice when I can think about their story and offer insights they may have missed about whatever subject. I sometimes prefer that when I get tired of the kind of bullshit that can come out of intuitives. It requires more work to go through and explain to someone that everything they've said is horrific horse shit than to sit, listen, and offer opinions.

But sometimes it is oh so worth it to do so. Especially when their bullshit idea is so stupid it is offensive.

Sometimes one's intuition is wrong or missing and can be improved. If you name a bullshit idea that is offensive, maybe I can try another intuition.

Are you challenging me to procure one?

I don't know if I can think of a specific example, I just know that there have been several situations where an immensely dumb person has gone through the effort to grow one misinterpreted, usually prejudiced, unsupported statement into this disconnected, poorly explained theory, then have diarrhea of the mouth and sow their stupidity into other equally dumb people's minds. Such as an explanation of why it makes sense and would be a GOOD idea to "nuke the whole middle east".

Yes a challenge, but the one you just gave does the trick. Lots of people don't see the whole picture as some interpreters of Islam. Sure they got it wrong just as many Christians fail to act or think in a "Christian" manner. This is an issue of how to deal with prejudice. It's a broad issue, worthy of Ti and Ne. It's both an issue in sociology and how to deal with the person who is mouthing this stuff. I don't know, but I'd invite the person to explain their view. Then try to trip them up on something small. The idea is to put doubt in their mind. Now it's my turn to think of an example:D.

The only problem is that these people are the people who are too...(searching for word-failing-sighing)....stupid to even realize that they are wrong. Even when you trip them up or completely take their argument's metaphorical pants off they just keep plowing on, talking louder, being more general and vague, then just saying "NOPE, YOU'RE STUPID, YOU'RE WRONG". They might as well just put their fingers in their ears and go "lalalalalala".

Okay. Let me see if I got this right. I am talking to a person who doesn't get it. I am a thinking person. So if I can't figure any way to get through to them, why am I continuing? I have no choice but to quit until and unless I can think of something better.

There is another approach, one I lack the skills for. How about pulling in someone who does -- maybe a non-INTP. That is to appeal to their emotions. Another way is to go over their head to some person they trust and talk to them. Who is the chief Ayatollah for Islam anyway??? Maybe THEY get it. There ought to be plenty of Muslims that are worthy of respect. Lets talk to them instead.

Fox News.
I should say that I don't want to offend anyone who actually believes what they say, but it would be a complete lie, so I'm not going to.
EDIT: I should also say that I don't want to start a political debate, and that would be true.

Maybe this can be empirically verified if both an N and an S write a joke in this thread, so we can tell the difference.
