As much as I like NIN, their version of Hurt doesn't hold a candle to Johnny Cash's cover.

Leave thread now pls ->>> :beatyou:

If you prefer watered down, teetering-on-generic music to a gut wrenching pain-soaked lament, then yes, Cash's cover might be the one to go with. Otherwise, the only thing Cash deserves credit for is bringing a little-known gem to a wider audience.

^ I like the Cash version, but yeah, I'm always a bit confused when someone says his version is way better. NIN's does seem more genuine and heart-wrenching, although that's probably partially due to me knowing it's the original. Covers always seem a bit insincere to me even though many of them are good.

Anyway, moar sad songs...

I'm really getting into Riverside. I love the emotional tension in these songs, and the vocals are absolutely haunting.

I don't think anything by NIN can count as "little-known".

Just recently started listening to Led Zeppelin again, 'The Rain Song' is pretty moving stuff, as is 'That's the Way' and 'Gallows Pole'. Pink Floyd too, and it's weird because I'm not really being brought to tears, more that it's emotionally disconcerting to listen to, for whatever reason, makes me feel lonely and anxious; my guess is it has something to do with David Gilmour's voice.

Dinosaur Jr. - The Lung, sounds like the sort of music that'd be played over a montage of your childhood/early adolescence.
UB40 - Can't Help Falling in Love, probably the heavy-synth beat and sappy lyrics.
Madonna - Take a Bow & I'll Remember
Dire Straits - Walk of Life
Robert Palmer - Woke Up Laughing

Best song about love ever:

YouTube- Eyedea & Abilities - Paradise
What a beautiful world, so fragile and fertile
Pain filled the void, when boy met girl
He's a puppet to nature, one year later now
So deeply and sickly in love, it makes him hate her
The average romanticized american relationship, sinks capsized
When either side becomes a slave to it
Conditioned, dependent, afraid to be alone
He needs that feeling that he can't create all on his own
He despises the fact she has a life outside of them
It drives him crazy to think she's not insanly consumed with him
Give her the guilt trip
And maybe she'll quit livin to stay behind these prison walls
And lose all individualism
Well this is happiness, masochistic torture, plagued by the decadent, craved for affection
The needle digs deep to push contenment through his blood stream, it drowned now - hollow
The pothole of a junkie
If he could only hear her sing he wouldn't wanna break her wings
But emptiness has such a warm subtle sting
She makes up for what he lacks - trapped
He can't imagine life without someone like that

[Chorus]
we've discover the long lost art dying
Only the lonely resent angels for flying
Twisted, living off eachother's sickness, like parasites
This is paradise
we've discover the long lost art dying
Only the lonely resent angels for flying
Addicted, afraid to take control of my own life
This is paradise

What a beautiful world, emotionally destroyed
Her became girl, when girl met boy
Between several breakups and plenty relapses
Routine read comfort led to serious attachment
Now every once in a while she forgets to breathe
Terrified of losing 'em, paradise is misery
Too much faith in the lifesaving knight in shining armor
Now what knight's noticing - the scar she can't hide any longer
But they were her story way before he was
It's gross hope to think that he would heal such deep cuts
At first it felt so right but after one too many fights
He turned out that hallway light and all the wonder turned to spite
So they sleep in the same bed with guns to eachother's heads
Dead the romance, boiling the blood that painted roses red
Suffering from post-honeymoon's disease, leeched to his whole existence
She'll die if he decides to leave
Addicted to the way she feels when they spend time together
Detouring the now in a childish attempt to find forever
Despite the fact they hold each other heart-to-heart
You can't be that close to somebody without being so far apart

[Chorus]

Silence, this is the most obscure sound I've ever heard
Those lonely giant spaces in between your every word
And maybe I'm totally crazy for holdin on
But just cause I'm insane don't mean that I'm wrong
Now that you're gone I can't sleep at night, i barely even function right
My memories on overdrive, too hungry and too cold to cry
Miss the companionship I once took for granted
The way you helped me manage, the partnership that vanished
But I don't expect you to stay chained by the ankle
There's so much world to see, so, fly free my angel
I'm dying without you but it's teaching me to live
Heaven ain't something someone else can give - it's all inside of me

[Chorus]

There's so much world to see, what's stopping me from flying free?
There's so much world to see, that's stopping you from flying free

As I understand it, this song is about the pain of losing a loved one. It makes me think of my grandmother (she was like a second mother to me) who died in 2002 from a brain tumor. I also think about my mother in law who is still battling terminal cancer.

And love lost ........

And the human cost of war ..........

And when I'm in the mood to shoot myself in the face .........

Someone mentioned Whiskey Lullaby, that one does it for me too.

As for other songs,

Black Rose-Trapt. That song makes me think of my ex. The parts the chorus and bridge. The bridge just sounded like him to me.
"I'm not the one who hurt you, so why are you so scared?
(you are who you are)
All that you've been put through couldn't be repaired
(to fall apart)
I'm not the one who hurt you
(I couldn't save you)
I'm the only one who cared
(You are who you are)
You need someone to turn to, and I couldn't be there."
That gets me every time.
Change the World-Finger Eleven
Mockingbird-Eminem
When I'm Gone-Eminem
The Last Night-Skillet
Savior-Skillet
Bother-Stone Sour
By the Way-theory of a deadman
I'll Keep your Memory Vague-Finger Eleven
The Bleeding-Five Finger Death Punch

Anything that remnds me of my past pretty much. God I feel so emo. Sorry guys. I'm going to add that you guys have some pretty beast taste in music.

In another state of mind

[Part one: My Greater Cause]

As I ran down the street all the
Faces appeared to me one by one
By the fifth I took a sudden turn
The melting snow revealed the bodies
Buried long ago
All the violence a man can take
Broken bones, and broken homes
Beneath my feet

On the dark side
We'll meet again
And cook it up for one more dance
It's who we are

But I swear it'll be my last
And if I go, I go alone

In the eyes of elephant
Nothing's too big and no one
Proves you're wrong
But the kind they had to offer
Didn't do me any good
It barely cracked the softer shell

On the dark side
We'll meet again
And cook it up for one more dance
It's who we are

But I swear it'll be my last
And if I go, I go alone
Yes I failed and I can't go back
I'm wasted beyond my years
And I breath to let it go

All that I wanted was to slip away
For a little while
Cause I felt alone
And couldn't keep up with the world

[Part Two: Home Coming]

[Instrumental]

[Part Three: House Of Cards]

Where am I?
They're all gone
All is black and white
I think I have passed on

All so warm
All so calm
All these worries shutting down
Something's wrong
Something's wrong

Is it really you?

A moment of...
And they're all gone
If I could close my eyes
I'm sure I'd disappear

Here they come
Pulling me up from the mud
I've failed yet I'm holding on
Here they come
I'm hiding in vain
My shadow and I
In our house of cards

Never did I question myself for the truth
There never was a greater cause
Never did I open my eyes for you
But there it was my greater cause

Here they come
Pulling me up from the mud
I've failed yet I'm holding on
Here they come
I'm hiding in vain
My shadow and I
In our house of cards

For an uplifting song, see Elliott Smith's "Big Nothing". They should play that one at weddings. Seriously though, I find the radiohead album ok computer tragic - but not hand me the kleenex tragic, more like, how did things get this messed up tragic. Sterile places, robotic people, and clueless institutions. Get me outta here

Truthfully, almost anything that features slow, depressive pianos generally makes me emotional. Either that, or it makes me think.

"Field of Daggers" by House of Heroes almost always makes me emotional.

I listen usually to metal and metalcore so it doesn't make me emotional too much.

The finish to Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree caught me off-guard once. And I remember In the Wake of Poseidon by King Crimson making me want to cry the first time.

Being honest the majority of songs that have made me cry have been Christian songs in a worship setting..

Just noticed your list Desertsmeagle - a good selection.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2
YouTube - Two Headed Boy Pt 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel

Daddy, please, hear this song that I sing
In your heart there's a spark that just screams
For a lover to bring
A child to your chest that could lay as you sleep
And love all you have left like your boy used to be
Long ago wrapped in sheets warm and wet

Blister, please, with those wings in your spine
Love to be with a brother of mine
How he'd love to find
Your tongue in his teeth, in a struggle to find
Secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight
Sounding only at night as you sleep

In my dreams you're alive and you're crying
As your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet
Rings of flowers around your eyes and I'll love you
For the rest of your life

Brother, see, we are one and the same
And you left with your head filled with flames
And you watched as your brains
Fell out through your teeth, push the pieces in place
Make your smile sweet to see, don't you take this away
I'm still wanting my face on your cheek

And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place where some holy spectacle lies
And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life

Two headed boy, she is all you could need
She will feed you tomatoes and radio wires
And retire to sheets safe and clean
But don't hate her when she gets up to leave
I've lost count of the times I've cried listening to this song.

I used this one as a background for my most recent video. It is from an old movie. It seems from my POV, that there is a shortage of instrumentals laden with emotional content, most of the tunes listed on this thread seem to involve emotional lyrics - not music (?)

Goodbye Blue Sky, though I think Floyd's a bit played out for me, at this point. Someone mentioned Rach, and that's a good call.

Other bottle-shakers include:

Clann Zu - A Sudden intake of Breath
Aereogramme - Barriers
Rilo Kiley - All the Good (that won't come out of me), Better Son/Daughter
Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise
Elliott Smith - I Did Not Understand, and about 30 others...

Most of them are obviously point out my failures as a human being, because it still means something, somewhere, to me. I hate that as much as I understand why people are the way they are, I don't understand how they can choose to be, or why I won't.
