As is well known, Luther preached against fighting the Turks --- or anybody: even the Pope --- on religious grounds; but acceded civil defence. George, Lord Byron died aggressively freeing the Greeks from the Turks. Vlad Tepes really carried it too far.

Yet none was subjected to the ravages of hackers on their websites ( martinluther.com, look-at-me-damn-you.com and all_turks_must_die.ro ): had they been, each of their attitudes may have hardened, still gradated, but with more bitterness.

In other words, the Turks are back. For half of the 20th, and part of today, the forum was down due to a Turkish hacker having assaulted the server at URLJet which necessitated the hosts saving many many sites and restoring back-ups. It wasn't aimed at us and almost certainly ( there are no details ) it was the same chap who broke the New Zealand parliament site yesterday and a whole range of others, Iskorpitx.

Screw You, Turkish Hacker, You F&(*%&^%(*%&^%#@#$%#!!!!!!!

Our apologies. In recompense we demand the restoration of Constantinople.

Oh-oh-oh!

Mister admin mister admin!

I sawed who it was!

He had a beard.

Also, there was a flag, a red one.

Though all my intelligent efforts into researching said banner were futile, for it seems to be a thing more vile and esoteric than even the druids did possess,

Truly, it is a mystery!

Actually, we had damn all to do with the incident, other than watching helplessly from the poolside, smoking nervously and sipping cocktails. This was a server attack, not a forum hack. The hosts did all the recovering. And these hosts take hourly back-ups.

But when you have around 30 - 50 sites per server each separately to back-up, and perhaps a number of servers involved it's gonna take hours of pointless work just to get back to where you started.

Restoring Constantinople, now that a thought. Perhaps there is a parallel universe where Constantinople never fell. Where Christopher Columbus never had a reason to 'discover' America and the Byzantine Empire instead of the Holy Roman Empire became the dominant force in that history...

Of course there is. But it's not our universe. Sadly.

How? How did a group as benevolent and friendly () as this create enemies? Out of the websites I have regulared during the years, at least three has been hacked, one fatally (firestream.net). I fucking hate hackers.

I fucking hate hackers.

I'm actually half-interested in the field. I'd like to write some super virus just to prove I could. Of course, I don't, for one reason: if I did, I'm sure I'd fuck up, infect my computer, and then it'd get out. And I have no desire to harm anyone else's property. So, best not to create it if I don't want to use it. Although, there is the whole idea of "learning to hack to protect against hackers," although I doubt I'd enjoy being a Security expert for more than say... A day. At least then, however, I'd be doing the computer-using world a service and finding ways to prevent or cure viruses rather than create them.

If I were to take up hacking as a skill (and I have thought about it before) then I would most likely not do anything malicious with it (even though... hehe). I think for the most part, I would remember what it is like for some of my favorite websites to get hacked and much of the information deleted. It sucks. And even more so with what the host has to deal with. But, now that I think about it... there's no way I would have such a great power to corrupt and destroy and rebuild and then do nothing with it. Power truly is about how you use it, but you can do a lot more if not bound by anything.

But I'm sure I could think of a few times when unleashing a super-virus upon the ignorant and hapless minds of the masses would be greatly satisfying. Wow, I sound sadistic.

If he dies at the tragically early age of 95, they'll blame it on the fags...

I leanred in sociology that there are a bunch of turks living in Germany

I heard that too.

Still, as immigrants go there are a lot worse groups than the Turks. They don't want to integrate much, and don't fit well into Germany's education system; but they don't seem aggressively islamicist or inclined to violence, despite some brutal incidents against them since they arrived in the '60s. Compared with some demented muslims in Britain, or the troubles France is facing with her immigrants --- not the Roma --- they are mild and law-abiding.

91-yr-old Helmut Schmidt* has correctly warned that 7 million unintegrated immigrants won't do wonders for Germany's future, but the Turks ( only a quarter of that total ) will probably be willing to let others alone if they are left alone.

Claverhouse :phear:

* From Wiki: Schmidt and his wife are both smokers. He is well known for lighting up cigarettes on TV interviews and talkshows. In January 2008, German police launched an enquiry after Schmidt was reported by an anti-smoking initiative for defying the recently introduced smoking ban. The initiative claimed that Helmut Schmidt had been flagrantly ignoring laws "for decades". Despite pictures in the press, the case was subsequently dropped after the public prosecution service decided that Schmidt's actions had not been a threat to public health.

Quoted for laughs. If the German police have nothing better to do than impose Nazi-Era Anti-Smoking persecution on an 89-yr-old ex-Chancellor for lighting up on television they have too much time on their hands...

All I care about is Claverhouse's literal way of expression. What are these allusions? Who are the "Turks" and these people? Public Figures? What is "Constantinople"? What is going on?

Course, I'm too worked to do the searching. ("Lazy", the societal constructed one, is not straightforward in meaning so I not use it.)

Though we wouldn't have to find him if we decided to send a letter of complaint.

Restoring Constantinople, now that a thought. Perhaps there is a parallel universe where Constantinople never fell. Where Christopher Columbus never had a reason to 'discover' America and the Byzantine Empire instead of the Holy Roman Empire became the dominant force in that history...

Actually, a long time ago I had a dream where some chap was sitting on one of the more massive modern tanks, like an Abrams, wearing dark glasses and smoking whilst gazing at a damaged concrete landscape --- I should say desolate, but all concrete cityscapes already have desolation built-in from the get-go --- and finding out the force was the Imperial Byzantine Army...

It had a Clark Ashton Smithian feel.

Martin Luther was a Saxon religious reformer; Byron was an English poet ( Scottish family ) who was perhaps the first modern celebrity, 'famous for being famous, outside his merits' unless you count Napoleon; Vlad Tepes was a Transyvanian terrorist. ( Prototype of Dracula, and terrorist in it's exact sense as typical of Robespierre or Lenin: using applied terror as intimidation to quell disagreement ). Constantinople was the heart of the Empire of Eastern Rome, The Kjzyl Elma 'The Red Apple', which was finally conquered by the Ottoman Turks just 500 years ago, which means modern Turks are so closely related to Europeans they are practically part of the family. Just muslim, sorta. ( Ataturk did a pretty good job in secularising the Turkish polity. )

The Ottomans were just pests to their neighbours however --- but, Winwood Reade, a once noted atheist thinker, who wrote a famous book that depressed even H. G. Wells, The Martyrdom of Man claimed therein that North Africa and it's equally pestlike peoples, such as the four Barbary states, were both more European than African, so the moral we must take is that Europeans are always pests.

Some Turks are famous for being skilled at hacking --- as are some other nationalities --- which I would put down to having to listen to Turkish pop music; doing anything on earth is preferable. Every now and then they go on a spree.

Iskorpitx is a particularly brilliant and industrious individual. I always mistrust people who live for their work.

Hope that makes it clearer.

vBulletin 3.8.5 has absolutely NO vulnerabilities, meaning that this version of vBulletin cannot be hacked. If you ran something other than 3.8.5, then I don't doubt you got hacked, especially if you were running a nulled version.

Rule number 1 of Security: Its not a matter of if your site can be hacked, but when: no website, no software, etc, is invulnerable.

lol. If you had the skill to write vulnerability-free code, your talents would surely be better put to use on something more important than internet forum software.

This also makes me laugh because the login here doesn't even use SSL, meaning that a very large number of people on the internet can read & steal your (or an admin's, through which they could do enough damage to validate the claim "the forum was hacked") password every time you log in, if they were listening.
