Not entirely sure where to put this, and I don't know how to add smileys myself:

Could we have an easily available sad emoticon that doesn't burst into tears every 2 seconds? It's so damn effusive I feel embarrassed using it. We need a moderately sad smiley, one that has some goddamned restraint.

If not, I'll :( on your ass and water your :rip:.

I agree! We should be able to express our gloominess on several different levels!

Can't we just have the old smilies, uploaded in addition to the new, and made visible in the list of immediate smilies?

I find the green smilies are too excessive.

When using smilies I enjoy the fact that I express myself through the smilies by placing and arrangement in relation the to text.

I do not use smilies with the intent of conveying a preset emotion.

The greens smilies to me, are the equivalent of text tabs that can be added saying
'I'm very very sad, so sad I;m crying'

or

'I am rolling my eyes showing dissaproval'

I prefer open ended smilies. Smilies that be twisted to the authors will.

Example.

Ooh, what are you planning on doing with that?:D

I just finished my coursework!:D

You trust me, don't you?:D

Gimme a call now, woncha?:D

See?

Flirty, pleased, suggestive and charming...

Something the new, moving smilies don't convey so well.

The new smilies were a very ill informed choice.

I'll say it until I'm blue in the face.

^Yes, yes yes. (Although I don't think the new ones are *bad*. I just miss the old.)

Also Melly, you need to work on that typing-and-breathing-at-the-same-time thing we talked about.

I think the new ones are wholly inadequate, not only that, I feel the old smilieys were part of the forum, a slice of our history.

You know, I don't usually agree with you this much. I think we may be making forum history right here.

I remember the good old days when Noddy's impeccably-placed blue faces had me in stitches for whole minutes at a time.
And when the ninja wasn't abused because nothing else would let us hit on it.
And when little Toothy added such fine nuances of occasionally twisted meaning, instead of acting as mere punctuation to a cheery salutation.

(Actually, I really love the banana men from INTPc.)

Nope. The vbull defaults are inartistic.

Any other smilies can be suggested, however adding smilies is one of the least pleasing admin duties and can cause the less stable to run amok, slaughtering passersby.

Make your own, place them on a server somewhere and hotlink them.

Smilies that be twisted to the authors will.

Why is that not surprising ?

Blue Melkors are amusing.

Ragnar, you displease me.

I wish to be trapped forver in the sordid past.

Will you at least not grant me this one wish?

Also, how can you call these green monstrosities artistic?

I will make my own smilies if I must.

Please wait a year.

*reasonably* To grant you this wish would mean inflicting the antique smilies of yesteryear upon the whole forum. However, should you find some unrepellent yellow smilies that Anthile approves a few might be added, yet not in the posting box but in the extended selection.

As to remaining in the magic of the past like lotos-eaters self-trapped upon an island of bliss, the downside is stagnation and a certain lack of stimulation. I could not ever suggest to anyone that they should like unwanted challenges, as in encouraging you to embrace new members, grow to like them and discover them as people; but on the other hand, I'm not prepared to close registrations forever either...

As Claver points out, rather too often, fora are as organic as flora: they need to grow undirected and as the elements dictate, otherwise you end up with sad stunted bonzai, which may be awfully pretty, but whose unnaturalness creeps the soul. And 'That which is not growing, is dying' to quote Gautama...

You are an old fool Ragnar.

Do you not know that growing is aging and aging is weakening?

Dying is merely growing backwards.
I would have an old, fresh-faced forum over the new, bastardisation of today, with it's half-bred Intp's with their barely thought out date threads, internet ejaculations (LOL,ROFL,etc), and two sentence posts lacking charm or wit, looking merely to be accepted as 'cool and thoughtful' by latching onto a personailty type which quite blatantly does not suit them at all.

Indeed. and in one of my favorite phrases: 'Progressiveness as a political idea merely enthuses increasing senility as all progress to the equality of death'...

Yet the grave awaits us all, as does progressive aging unless the grave gets us first. Youth is that period when you can hang out with 16-yr-olds and they don't think of you as older: the rest is merely waiting for the end. As an Englishman I am contractually obliged to keep a skull on the velvet-draped credenza in one of my studies and meditate about death as night falls.

The mordant pages of Tom Sharpe's 'The Throwback', though a couple of decades old, can still give foreigners who aren't ever going to come here a good taste of contemporary English life.

Dying is merely growing backwards.

I don't quite understand that. But I'm pretty sure that's not what happens.

"Sir," said a panting little fiend, in the form of a tadpole with hairy arms and legs like a monkey's, as he ran up with four bundles of faggots, "we are doing the very best we can for your discomfort. But you damned have no consideration for us, and do not remember that we are on our feet day and night, waiting upon you," said the little devil, whimpering, as with his pitchfork he raked up the fire about Coth.

The staff merely provide the venue, the patrons choose the dance.

How do you return to a past that exists in memory ? By a grand purge of unreliable elements ? That would not address the fact that members naturally eventually leave forums anyway, especially those that have nothing new to say and no new members to post provocative and bold new thoughts.

Complaining about the 'youth of today, and how it was better in my past', is one of the permitted consolations of old age, and I congratulate you on reaching this querulous stage so early in your career.
