I was wondering if any of you guys played any roguelikes, and if so, what specific ones you liked. I do, and my favorites are Elonahttp://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html and POWDERhttp://www.zincland.com/powder/

These may be a little ...err....... lacking in depth compared to classics like Nethack(I'd play it, but i just can't stand the insanely small tiles.) but I find them to be entertaining.

I used to play Moria endlessly. Much later I tried Nethack but didnt get into it so much, but that may have been a time issue on my side. Also, I consider Diablo a roguestyle game and I played that to death as well.

I started with Dungeon Crawl after it was mentioned in the Questionable Content webcomic. But I only ever got to lvl 10. :( I would have probably continued playing it but someone in the IRC recommended Dwarf Fortress so I started with that. I'm currently building my 3rd Fortress.

Now I'm playing Rogue Survivor, it is a zombie survival roguelike with graphics, a hunger system, a sleep system, barricading, half-decent combat, smart npcs.......just awesome.

Kind of. The only real difference is that you are not directly the protagonist.

So I downloaded both that you provided links for, I can't play Elona because the download at the link is in Japanese so I have no idea what I'm doing. I did play Powder however and have successfully spent the last two hours doing nothing but dungeon crawl (yay!).

I'm really enjoying Rogue Survivor, but I'm really bad at these it seems, I always preferred Real-Time to Turn-Based anyways.

I can't seem to survive more than 10-ish days, I always get owned by a pack of gangstaz or some fucking bikers while I'm out looting food for my safehouse

My problem is that ammo is generally hard to find so I just buff melee skills a lot, I often get a point or two of leadership but then they end up dying or starving because I'm not very good at the follower commands, or they don't trust me yet. I often have a shortage of food but it's not too bad unless I have followers. The one time I get the light eater skill I spawn next door to a grocery store, such a waste....

I can make it successfully to day 5-6 but that's where I start to lose the ability to find certain items usually just one of the above (weapons, food, health). Sleep is rarely the issue for me, I just run back to whatever basement I had before.

EDIT: I just spawned in a Police station for the first time, I brought all the Zombies down there when they chased me so the cops could kill them, cops are really weak....I just had a bunch of Zombie cops chasing me also.

Certain parts in the main menu were in english, and I downloaded it from the page that was all in english, it's just as soon as I went to create a character or whatnot it was all in not-english. I will search this anyways however.

Huge nethack fan here =)
I'm pretty bad at it, I can normally only get to the quest level, and then I die trying to level up to start the quest.

I've played so very many roguelike games. I remember the original rogue. Played so many version of NetHack and spending hours polymorphing stacks of objects for the fun of it, so much that death by mimic was common for me.

The latest rogue like I've started playing is Cataclysm: http://whalesdev.com/forums/index.p...ed8501e8c0d41d02e7c&topic=554.msg6688#msg6688

Zombie survival but you can have bionics and mutations. I've not yet survived very long in the game.

Canada... no more.
I play a lot of Dwarf Fortress, both adventure mode and fortress mode.
I have also played cataclysm quite a bit. (Not WoW)

So I downloaded Cataclysm. It may be my favorite roguelike so far, despite the fact that I have yet to survive past day two and have died dozens of times...

Been playing them all the time, currently actively play Cataclysm and Crawl.

Well, the difficulty is where the roguelikes excel. A few tips: the enemies spawn on sound and move toward its source (can be found if you browse the game's code), so avoid pointless door breaking/window smashing. Don't use guns without without silencers, or craft a "noob" weapon: a longbow.

In the latest update, sound doesn't affect spawns as much. What happens is Zeds spawn as time passes. They usually don't have the slightest idea where you're at until: 1. They see you or 2. They hear you. Whales said this is intended to make using firearms more dangerous.

And you will not believe how many times I've died trying to make a longbow. I made one once. I was slaughtering them. Headshots, criticals, until pain dropped my STR to 7 and I had to hack at 'em with my machete. I died shortly after.

Running is usually better than fighting, unless you're wearing the most hardcore armor and can one-shot greens with your melee weapon of choice.

Well, the STR requirement for the longbow was dropped to 5 STR, however the firing range was reduced too, so you can't use it as a sniper rifle, like you could before with high perception and archery. Compond Bow is a good alternative, as you'll have greater range with no serious penalties for lost STR and can still one-shot most of the enemies.

As for running and melee, the trick is to lure enemies into a hard-to-move terrain, like windows or pits. You could whack them there at least a couple of times before they attack you again.

I managed to find a Savage 111F for my current character, and along with the enhancements I've stashed it makes a great weapon. 12 days of survival already.

I haven't survived past day 2 yet. It either crashes or I get jumped while running from a previous encounter.

Perhaps you are using a Windows build posted on their forums? I have heard that those are prone to crashes. Try and build it on your own machine, it won't take you long and would protect from crashes.

As for getting jumped, try running into the woods and recover there. Unless you meet any annoying bears, wolves or bees, it's the safest place. And don't forget to sleep (preferably in the toilets, sewers or basements), carry around some sleeping pills or NyQuil.

I usually end up dying on my first run in the city. The problem is surviving that first run. After that, it should hopefully be easier. This specific desktop runs Vista (cue groaning), so yes, I'm running a windows build. However, I may end up getting the Linux virtual box on this machine (I run cataclysm on that on my laptop) but the download and setup is an arduous hour-long process with my connection. It hasn't crashed with the virtual box on the laptop, though.

Nethack is the only game I continue to come back to. I've been playing it off and on since junior high. Still haven't ascended though. When I get too serious about surviving it loses its fun. Best part of the game has to be provoking the, "You your character did what?" response in my gamer friends.

I like the idea of dwarf fortress. I played it for a little while. I like the adventure mode better. Super pumped for the next update.

I'm not sure, but it's rather chilly.
Lemme see...
I play DF, but I'm terrible at it. I either die upon the first invasion, or I've managed to commit suicide by then by playing with pumps.
I also play Nethack, Dungeon Crawl, ToME, and a couple of the 'bands, all with similar levels of ineptitude.
Woo!

Reviving a lost thread as DF looks to have another major update soon, and I've been playing it waaay too much. Also, just curious what people have been playing recently.

I haven't been playing roguelikes a whole lot recently, but when I did/would, I would usually play Cataclysm...

I've been too busy for any really immersive entertainment recently.
