I am currently trying to apply for this part-time job at an airport. It's been a long time since I have worked. My work experience is pretty much just sales.

I have to apply online and send in my resume online too. Do you guys have any tips on how to get myself noticed?

I also don't want to lie on the application...but I haven't worked for 2-3 years and that looks really bad. Should I be completely honest on my resume and cover letter?

Yes, because airports will do extensive background checks for security reasons. It might even be a crime to lie on an application that involves security. Don't know for sure. You will need to explain why you have not worked for 2+ years. Come clean about your drug use and how you have come to stop using (assuming you still have). It might actually help you to be honest about something they may not otherwise find out about. Especially if you don't have a drug related criminal record.

Hmm.... you might even be able to 'market' your drug-use. Cause ya know, being a druggie gives you druggie-radar. Kind of like the gaydar.

Why do you want to work at an airport?

But realistically, do you think someone would hire a former drug user? Maybe I can say I was "discovering" myself...

Well besides that, I need to get the interview first. Any ideas on how to make my resume/coverletter stick out?

@RT: I wouldn't mind working anywhere actually. I just need a job right now. The airport seems like a nice environment.

yeah, realistically you should totally absolutely lie about drug use, unless you've actually been caught.

Its hard to think about for a part time job. Are we talkin airport tacobell or bagage handlers? The only thing I can think of to is come up with is to find some kind of strange statistic... hey I care about this shit, right?

Yea like I said look for some interesting facts about what you are going to see or deal with. That you would be dedicated to improving those statics or something like that... gotta sell it right? I think you just need to figure out a way to show interest.

Maybe you could not write it in the resume, but come clean at the interview? When they see you're a normal person, maybe it's easier for them to hire you then. Instead of just reading about it.

I don't have any experience in this area, though. I could be wrong.

I would think if it's an airport they'll probably drug test you, if you're confident you can pass the test, there's really no reason to bring it up.

A wonderful excuse for not having worked for several years is either:

1. I've been going to college for the last couple of years and didn't want to try and juggle work and school (obviously this only works if you've been in college recently)

2. Lots and lots of family health issues: Grandma/Pa/Mother/Father/Distantly Related Cousin has been really really sick and I've needed to spend time at home helping them out. :D

As for making your resume stand out...Well, frankly, I get the weirdest shit from people's resumes. One time a guy actually turned in a resume that had a list of his weight lifting statistics...I work at a book store. I just stared at the resume and thought What The Hell?

I've found that the best way to sell yourself is by looking at what the hiring manager for the job wants in an applicant. Put yourself in their shoes. What do they want? Then make a resume that fits that.
