It’s unlikely that the experience changed these volunteers’ feelings about death. But Slater thinks the experience might give a feeling that a person’s consciousness is separate from their physical body. “It gives a sense that it’s possible to survive beyond death,” he says.
the other day i crashed into one of those fools who are so much convinced that the so called astral realm is such a "real" reality, that they think they can literally get killed inside of it, by demons and shit. which goes to show that fear is in deed rather subjective, just like degrees of lucidity. just because you know that you are "dreaming" doesn't mean you know for a fact what goes on, because you can have all kinds of silly ideas about what it means "to dream". is it your separate self projecting other personalities inside of your brain? is it your soul traveling to god? likewise we can have all kinds of ideas about what it means to be alive. but organic reality has a way of destroying silly ideas in favor of reality. reality can't be known conceptually, but it's happening and so we experience it indirectly. you have to throw people out of a window and measure their heart-rate as they fall. this is fear of death.

*astral realm is where you go in lucid dreams of the "out of body experience" variety, which is rather unrelated to near death experiences.

Is the origin of our experience our brain? If something seems real to us through our senses processed through the brain should we be able to accept it as reality? Would we be able to accept that the astral projection experience was just as real as our standard reality? That would mean that religion was a reality for some people but not others. I dont really think that we can bring things into being by just thinking about them. Or can we? Hmmmm:confused:

How do you know that it's not a "real" reality? What is it?

VR in its current state prohibits a feeling of self. This is why people don't fear dying in video games.

If/when we find ourselves in a much more robust VR experience (touch, taste, smell, etc) the fear of dying will return. Because we are convinced of the self inside the environment.

Consciousness is what you know combined with what you're about to know. Subconsciousness is a primordial facet of consciousness where thoughts are pulled apart and put back together haphazardly which literally creates something new. Usually it results in a nightmare.

If I had to guess I'd say most of our abstract thought processes have come from the subconscious. It can sometimes be right but it's usually wrong. I would question the merits of any subconscious thought.

Flooding the conscious mind with unconscious thoughts would be an interesting but probably terrifying experience then. Maybe the people trying to access the subconscious are introverted adrenaline junkies.

This reminds me of the movie Flatliners.
