soooo my boyfriend is getting me into that whole anime thing, i haven't seen much besides a few episodes of trigun, a few episode of love hina (or whatever the hell that show was called but that was a long time ago), and i just watched the movie plus a couple episode of haruhi shamalamadingdong and that was pretty cool.

basically, i enjoy cute, i enjoy weird, and i enjoy thoughtfulness.

recommendations would be greatly appreciated. in return, if you accept, i will offer you random trivia about domesticated cat breeds.

Cant go wrong with Death Note. Cant help you with the "cute" recommendation, but all anime is weird. You have to be more specific.

the turkish angora is one of the few domestic cat breeds that does not naturally shy away from water (which could be due to the fact that it is one of the oldest breeds known).

anyway, i don't really know how to be more specific with my anime preferences because i haven't watched enough anime to really know my preferences. i'll basically watch anything that's good though, i'm not picky. i'll try death note next chance i get, since that is a name i see popping up everywhere.

Well, if you are INTP just like me (in the description you have "love" type, so I am not sure), you should try out animes, that have 'one more mechanism' in them. I've found out, that I love animes just like that! In some sort of other dimension (not so important), with one more thing to offer, that is explained in every detail (for example Death Note 'how to use' pages).
[Name of anime - the 'new mechanism'/s]
Death Note - Death Notes, Shinigamis, Their world etc.
FullMetal Alchemist - Alchemy, Homonculus, Lapis Philosophorum, etc.
Naruto (actually not so much, I like more the animes, that have actually end) - ninjas, jutsus, bijuus etc.
One Piece (as I said up there) - Devil's Fruit, Grand Line world (I call it like that)

And, well, there is one more example, that is not anime, but perfectly fit into category of "my favourite": Assassins Creed series.

Or in the short version said - The animes, that have ended, and are introducing some new element/mechanism. And then I don't care if it is fantasy, sci-fi or history.

Theres tons of good ones, but everyones tastes are so different that I often get exasperated when I recommend something and then their feedback indicates mediocrity. I once took a girl along to an evenings anime showing where they alternated between Samurai 7 and Midori no Hibi. I liked Samurai 7 while she enjoyed Midori, so theres my recommendation - Midori no Hibi. (its actually quite sweet and fun and admit I enjoyed it too, lol, and it covers your sweet, weird and thoughtfulness all in one)

As an aside, I just recently watched Basquash which was a fun mix of sci-fi and basketball (who would have thought, hehe). Excellent artwork too for a series. If you liked Trigun then you may enjoy this too.

Ah My Goddess! probably another one. :)
Full Metal Panic is probably also quite a good suggestion, now that I think about it.

And Last Exile is one that I can't recommend enough, no matter what type of anime you like. Its just a great adventure with a lot of heart. And now that Ive said that, any of the Studio Ghibli titles are worth mentoining, notably Nausicaa, Laputa:Castle in the Sky and probably Spirited Away - all three are feature length movies and are excellent.

I'm not really a huge anime fan but some of my favorite series are Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Berserk (there's a remake of this series in the works too) and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (better overall than the first FMA series, although the first ten episodes are really just an abridged version of the first half of the first series). Movie-wise I remember liking Princess Mononoke, Metropolis, Read or Die (the movie, I've never seen the series), Vampire Hunter D and Paprika.

Trigun is a good series too (IMO), although I have some reservations about it that keep me from wanting to list it with the others. Also check out all the super-famous ones, like Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Anyway, if you've never seen them I really can't recommend Cowboy Bebop and FLCL highly enough.

...And you enjoy smart ones? Like Death Note?

I am not a big fan of anime, but this show I honestly cannot call an 'anime'. Much rather "The show I love". You know. It is a mutual connection..... Well then watch this one, indulge , enjoy and comment to: Lydia.

I also must recommend: Naruto & Code Geass. They are rather extraodinary. Code Geass is especially.

EDIT: The date of this thread made, is rather different from today's. But, can't help hope I assisted anyways.

I second both FLCL and Read or Die.

my all time favs:
akira (guy has authority problems, hate-envies his band-leader, blows up all of existence in response)
battle angel alita (cute romantic teenage love plus end-time mood)

other good animes:
papurika (dream hijacking like inception)
Howl's Moving Castle (cute lighthearted)
metropolis (visually appealing, but a bit difficult)
giant robo (funny, fast paced, about supleratives, good vs evil. saving the world)

its a matter of taste but i have sort of disliked most of what i have seen, .... i often sort of like it but still fall asleep or switch to the browser window and do other things ... not drawn in. when i was much junger, things like ghost in the shell, wings of honeamise, green legend ran, well most things would draw me in, ...

i have little to none experience with all the millions of series. besides sailor moon which i watched more than a decade ago, along with nadja secret of blue water and voltron lolz, and other silly things that are better than doing homework.

i have tried to like some older artsy movies like angel's egg but failed.

It should be noted that English subtitles are usually superior to English dubs. There are some notable exceptions to this, though, including Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist.

Also, if over-the-top, hilariously epic robot fights are your thing, check out Gurren Lagann.

Edit: Sorry, I can't help myself. Here's your daily dose of epicness.

Kaiji is where it's at. it's like Fight Club. Bringing you down to your most basic and initial standpoint in life, and THEN slamming you further down below to eternal drudgery. Cute and thoughtfulness doesn't often mix well but... Angel Beats! = Haruhi + (life and death)

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood … Akira, Ghost in the Shell

Seconded. Some of my favourites also include Kino no Tabi, Mushishi, xxxHOLiC, and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. Some of the more gory ones include Elfen Lied, Gantz, Ergo Proxy, and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. Hopefully you'll like some of these.

One of my favorite anime movies was "Spirited Away".

If you want to explore lots of anime rather cheaply and have a decent internet connection I would suggest getting a Netflix online subscription. I think its like $8 a month and tonnes of all sort of movies and tv series (anime and otherwise).

There are plenty of ways to watch anime for free without Netflix. Funimation itself has its own youtube channel that pretty much has all of its anime in sub and dub format. Other than that, just google the anime you want to watch and you will find some type of stream.

I've had better luck watching them on Netflix than trying the free ones. The cost of Netflix is trivial compared to how I value my time and the desire to be frustration free.

As with anything your mileage may vary.

I used to watch this when I was a tween...one of the first amazingly well made Space-animes to come out. There is actually a new Space Battleship Yamato animated film out now, see below. I must say Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato is one of the best anime series ever created, but of course I'm biased.

Some stuff has obviously changed, but this still gives me goosebumps:

Quote from youtube:

Debuting in Japanese Cinemas on April 7, 2012, Space Battleship Yamato: 2199 is an animated retelling of the 1974 series, originally announced at the end of 2010 as in development for a Television Series, and then confirmed at Anime Expo in 2011 as a remake of the original "Journey to Iscandar" story arc. Produced by Enagio, helmed by Shoji Nishizaki, the adopted son of the late Space Battleship Yamato creator/producer, Yoshinobu Nishizaki. The Supervising Director is celebrated character designer and animation director Yutaka Izubuchi and Character Designs were created by veteran Nobuteru Yuki. The animation is being produced by Xebec and AIC. The first two episodes of this new series have been edited into a 50-minute feature to promote the new series. From the Teaser Trailer, launched on November 11, 2011, the designs of the Gamilas and Earth Defense Force spacecraft appear to have been kept entirely true to the original series. Other production details and credits (including broadcast network and airdates) have yet to be released to the public as of November 2011. The theatrical feature will bow in only ten Japanese Cinemas, nationwide.

I have no idea how I'm going to find this movie. I guess we'll have to wait for the DVD.......

Death note has a great plot
Dragon ball (my personal favourite, probably because its part of my childhood)
Chobits (is really interesting, it's like a philosophical science fiction romance series, plus it's beautifully done)
one piece is brilliant
black lagoon is quite good, cool characters
full metal alchemist is great a well.

by the way I recommend reading them not watching them, dragon ball for example is crap on T.V and very slow, but brilliant as a book. Alot of them are quite well adapted though.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (tatami galexy) - Great anime about life, has a great twist at the end bringing all the episodes together.

Daily lives of high school boys - Really funny anime about school life.

Monster - About a doctor who saves a boy, that grows up to become a serial killer, over the life of a mayor. Great anime with mature themes.

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin - Anime about a group of boys in around 1955 who are sent to a reformatory school, where they endure abuse and hardship.

Bakemonogatari - Good anime about spirits and the supernatural, I enjoy the psychological aspect of it where spirits have reasons and rules for their curses and can be worked around by specialists also has good art style

Nisemonogatari - follow up of Bakemonogatari

Great teacher onizuka - Good anime about life

Clannad and Clannad after story - good animes about life with eye watering scenes (especially after story) and harem

Golden boy - Inspirational anime about life also contains ecchi

Midori days - Good romance anime

Cromartie Highschool - Manly anime/parody about delinquent life, lost of philosophical ideas

House of five leaves - Samurai ends up working for a band of thieves and uncovers the leaders past

Studio Ghibli is an animation studio created and driven by the infamous Hayao Miyazaki. This Japanese studio is so popular and well-renowned that Disney bought the rights to the American releases just so they could slap on the Disney logo at the beginning of the films. The only other company Disney has done this with is Pixar studios. Disney may not produce any masterpieces of its own these days, but its financial interests are an indicator that the company still knows quality animation when it presents itself.

Here are several trailers for Studio Ghibli films since 1984 until the present so you can check them out for yourself and maybe see what grabs your interest: http://youtu.be/A8T-bfhJjvM

If you're still not sure by the end of the video, then I'd recommend the studios most critically acclaimed film 'Spirited Away'. You won't go wrong with that one.

___________________

If you want to see a sci-fi action masterpiece with trippiness on par with Space Odyssey 2001 with animation you will not believe possible from a 1988 anime then you might fall in love with Akira. With subversive themes in a cyber-punk future, Akira delivers entertainment on a level one associates with Hollywood classics like Back to the Future or Indiana Jones. This film will not disappoint. Period. Akira should be a synonym for EPIC.

Here's the trailer for the blu-ray dvd of Akira: http://youtu.be/aqp1BDXpAJU

An interesting side note is that Kanye West is an anime fan, and the music video for his song 'Stronger' references the shit out of this film. Another bit of trivia is that Leonardo Dicaprio had a plan for his studio that created Inception to create a live action version of Akira. The plan was scraped due to budget issues.
_________________________________

Ghost in the Shell is a movie produced by the same studio responsible for Akira. It was produced after Akira, and has similar roots in philosophical and dystopian themes.

However, Ghost in the Shell has a slower pace at times, and may take a couple viewings to really appreciate. There is at times very dry philosophical dialogue that takes its time in delivering. Although slow paced, the dialogue is almost spookily poignant in addressing the greatest philosophical of all time. The depth is enough to give you chills.

All this dialogue is couched between beautifully executed action sequences. My only qualm is how often the female lead is naked, but anime is every bit as guilty of objectification of women as the live action studios in Hollywood.

If you don't mind ruining this part of the film for yourself this scene is a great example of the philosophical tone of the film: http://youtu.be/YZX58fDhebc

Honestly, the film usually takes more than one viewing so even ruining this bit probably won't hurt. It'll probably help you understand the whole thing better in its full context.

Ghost in the Shell had a big influence on the Matrix, which I think is pretty cool. I don't think this movie is perfect, but its a movie for anyone who likes contemplative subjects and depth.

And for the love of god do not watch the version of Ghost in the Shell on Netflix with 2.0 in the title. They add some butt ugly computerized renderings of the original hand drawn material that looks horrible!
_________________________________________

If there were ever an anime to watch on drugs it's FLCL. FLCL, or Fooly Cooly, is a six episode series made by Gainax studios. The entire thing was made for the studio to try out experimental animation. This series is a visual orgasm that doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest. You may be initially turned off by it and even find it annoying, but the more you watch it the more you understand what's going on, and the funnier you realize it is.

If you find yourself perplexed by things in the show just look them up online and you'll find some anime nerds with either theories or legit explanations for the mind fucks you have experienced.

There are amazing battles at the end of each episode that really epitomize the experimental animation, and are extremely fun to watch. It's complete over-the-top fight scenes that shamelessly leave reality behind in pursuit of pure animated frisson.

So to enjoy this you need to suspend disbelief and be exceptionally patient and open-minded. I can guarantee you will not understand what you have watched after you finish all six episodes the first time around.

A popular theory behind the meaning of the show is that it is symbolic of the challenges and onset of puberty. This is my favorite theory.

Adult Swim has gone on the record saying that FLCL is the best thing they have ever aired. Also, the music for the series is another of its winning features. And despite its nonsensical behavior, the show also offers several heart-wrenching and emotional moments that make it a well-rounded experience.

Here's a music video with clips using the White Stripes: http://youtu.be/efSUFPAG_mc
________________________________________

Here are some honorable mentions:
- Paprika: http://youtu.be/anu2IrsUlVs
- Millenium Actress: http://youtu.be/vpGrD5wUzKE
- Tokyo Godfathers (Christmas Movie): http://youtu.be/RjmgSccMGQg
- Memories (Three Short Films): http://youtu.be/NTyRMfdDfc8
- Cowboy Bebop: http://youtu.be/T6zDfxZ4NcE

(Cowboy Bebop was influenced by Lupin III, which is given much less appreciation due to its poor animation and trend toward looney tunes and mad tv style comedy over more serious storiest, BUT I have come to really enjoy the old Lupin III shows myself. I find something incredibly charming about the show despite the crude animation its stories are told in. Lupin III is genuinely hilarious. The character designs are still fresh, and hold up well. And when the show isn't making a joke of itself, it will occasionally surprise you with poignancy from its writers and depth and tragedy put behind characters when unexpected. It was the first animated series in Japan to be made specifically for adults. Maybe I'm just biased, but I think this series grows on you if you can get passed its limited animation, and frequently ridiculous scenarios...

Serial Experiments Lain, is a great anime for INTP's since you can re-watch it again and again and still find yourself theorizing about the actual meaning of the show.

The series is about a young girl named Lain living in what can only be described as an alternate universe. It deals heavily in psychology, philosophical "What is life"-"What is real"'s, surrealism, and the effects of technology on human connection.

Good shit.
Plus there's a lot of allusion to random people and events throughout the anime which actually have existed, I've heard that going through all the research makes watching the show an even more intriguing and interesting experience.

(Also it has the best opening ever.)
