Quiet or Noisy Atmosphere when Studying?

I've noticed when I study I have to be around noise. I usually study in the cafeteria. When I study in a quiet place, I get distracted with my thoughts. The noise helps me focus on the task at hand instead of daydreaming.

Is this a sign of extroversion or introversion? How do you guys study?

Study? What's that?

When I do study it can't be for more than short intervals of about five minutes. In silence, or else the noise distracts me, especially if it's music. Plain noise would probably just give me a headache.

I need silence, mostly. Sometimes I will have baroque music on in the background. It is interesting what you are saying about being in a public place. I find very often that I concentrate better when I'm in a cafe, library, etc. I think it works better for me as I will be less inclined to be distracted by other things to do at home. Also I don't feel as isolated.....But that is me.

I usually study with my MP3 player playing. But I can't really deal with background noise unless I choose the background noise. For example, I can't study where a bunch of people are talking at once, or in front of the TV (I'm oddly compelled to watch whatever is on TV when I'm in front of the TV). I seem to have an issue with interpersonal and visual distractions when studying.

But when I have to work hard to understand the material, I prefer complete silence so my mind can focus completely and go into overdrive.

Lost, after wandering irresponsibly away from the
I prefer a bookstore cafe or a similar place: somewhere where there is noise, but there's also some kind of pressure forcing everyone to be quiet, so that no-one is yelling or making a display of themselves; loud voices irritate me, even make me flinch sometimes. (Not through any fault of the people with loud voices, of course.) If I'm at home on my own, the radio or my music library playing softly achieves the same purpose. Silence makes me edgy and seems to encourage plotbunnies and random thoughts to pounce on me at the slightest opportunity.

Silence. If I'm in a noisy environment I get distracted and want to listen to a conversation or play a game or read or listen to the song properly. I can work with noise if it's 'white noise' such as in college with people talking together until you can't really hear the words anymore.

It doesn't really matter...even though there's a lot of noise, sometimes, I don't hear anything, I just get lost in whatever I'm doing...

I'm not too sure for myself. I never study, but if i had to guess based off of what would distract me and such, i would say in a noisy area or with friends. If i'm by myself or in a silent area, my thoughts would take off and distract me for sure. Maybe if i had music to listen too as it would act like a medium for concentration. being around friends would almost enforce me to study.

I need music. Preferably very loud. I can`t study on noise. Today we had an open book exam and everyone were going through their books/notes :@ I had to read the text a few times until I finally managed to get into it and understand what it`s about (Beer :D )
When I really need to concentrate I lower the volume, but I can`t study without it.

I suppose it depends on what I'm studying.
For example, if I have to read something too technical or boring, a cafeteria is the perfect place to go since the hum of voices helps me concentrate. However, I have to pick the place carefully if I don't want to hear the complete anthology of some stranger's love/sex life, which is usually quite distracting (and not exactly interesting).
But if I'm studying something that catches my attention, then a silent place is the best option because I can be sure my mind won't wander, and because other noises would probably distract me at some point.

When I do study, I prefer silence, any kind of noise aggitates me and it makes my mind wander... though if I am in a nosy environment, I can focus, it just takes a little more out of me, but if it's really loud, then I might just find myself thinking about random thoughts, reading the passage, and not comprehending it at all.

I prefer to study with light trance music.

classical, pop, rock or any other music are too "interesting" and melodic for me and I'm apt to lose concentration. However trance just gets me into "the zone"

A nice rythmic and lazy beat so my mind does not wander~

Study? What's that?
That was my initial reaction. I was never one to study.

If I need to focus and get something done, though, I can't have loud tv/music or background noise that is out of my control. It drives me crazy and completely destroys my concentration. TV/music at a nearly imperceptible volume can work, but I'm not sure if it actually helps.

When I was young (4ish-?, not sure when I lost it), I was able to block everything out around me and focus completely on a task. Whether it was a book, math problems, or just random play, nothing short of direct intervention would get my attention. I still recall times in school when I missed things I was supposed to do because I got so engrossed in a book or other work that I didn't hear the teacher talking.

These days, I can occasionally get into a 'zone' like that, but never to the extent where I can shut everything out like I used to. I suspect those are my most productive times, but I don't really have control over them. Maybe if I had noise-canceling headphones and blinders, in an empty room with no windows and doors...

This is not so simple as noise, no noise. There are many variables at play here: frequency, volume, constancy, and also visual aspects such as the presence of people and light levels, the size of the space and its acoustic characteristics, and the kind of activity you will be doing...

Usually maintaining constant absolute silence is harder because pretty much anything, no matter the volume or frequency, will be quite noticeable. Trying to isolate yourself totally is nigh-impossible, and any minuscule interruption is bound to provoke loss of concentration.

A low-mid frequency, low volume background noise is much more effective, since it can mask most of the accidental sounds, but loud high pitched noises / voices will still be annoying as hell. This can be somewhat mitigated in large places with preferably soft surfaces that diffuse sound (hard surfaces and confined spaces make it cacophonous and annoying). People moving (like in a hallway) can be very visually distracting, so a coffee place or a park where people are more static tends to be ideal (beware birds and girls and ringtones though). A private garden with some trees and a breeze are wonderful too. Alternatively this can be achieved in solitude with mellow instrumental music (no lyrics) or noise generators and provides excellent concentration for reading. When reading, daylight is always preferable to all sorts of artificial light, but the grayish light on overcast days can be improved with a hint of warm light from a lamp. Fluorescent is horrible for reading. Clouds or moving leaves that make the light levels vary can also be very distracting...

High-volume music with lots of repetition / constant rhythm can also be quite helpful to concentration, like some varieties of rock, or trance. This is most useful late at night (for some reason electronic music always seems wrong during the day) and mostly in doing creative endeavors like drawing, programming, etc (not reading). Headphones are good for privacy. Lyrics are good and can even provide inspiration and keep one from falling asleep. After one gets in the zone you really stop noticing the music at all, even if it is very loud. Dim, warm ambient light, with a bright, white task light seems optimal in this case. The ambient light is essential, else the darkness makes too much contrast with the task light and can make for a very drab atmosphere, same with over-lit rooms that can make one very uncomfortable. At all costs avoid the use of a single, center-of-the-room overhead light, it casts depressive shadows and always fails to illuminate adequately... a variety of small peripheral lighting is more even and pleasant.

:elephant:
Of course one can always procrastinate, even in the most ideal of atmospheres...

I can be intensely focused when I decide to be. Most of my studying involves reading and I might as well drop into an alternate dimension when reading.
