Right you are. I don't dispute this.

I'm suggesting they are not diplomatic characters by default.

I'll quickly explain in more detail: a diplomat in such a situation would be somebody who would work to resolve a dispute in a pragmatic fashion that equally weighs the needs of every individual against the needs of the group.

Diplomatic is defined in this context as:

As an alternative, I'd suggest the ENFP type is more characteristically going to work to exclude or remove/ignore something which they see as a toxic presence, rather than being diplomatic and sensitive about it. One particular tactic that people employ in this regard is by working to ridicule the opponent and evoking other members of the group to participate in excluding them. I believe this particular trait is highly characteristic of FP types in general.

And while I acknowledge all of this is correct, I simply am too lazy (just don't care?) to make bomb proof, well researched arguments as it is not my prerogative.

I suppose if I DO care enough, I will research more, and in fact, do this frequently. Not in this case, however, as I'm not really concerned about which personality type is most characteristically the most diplomatic.

Introversion makes for a naturally neutral standpoint since by definition intrapersonal conflicts take place in the extroverted domain, which extroverts operate within. Extroverts are more inclined to side with whoever is in harmony with the current extroverted domain. They have a more difficult time detaching than do introverts. Of course there are other factors to be considered as well. An ENFP will be a much better diplomat than an ISTJ any day?

An ENTP diplomat might end up being chased away by both parties no?

I don't know man- some of the entp folks I know will tear out your soul and make you cry- even if you 'win' an argument on the facts. They can be devastating because of their ability to read people and cut thru the bs.

Apparently a lot of comedians are entp too. Go fuck with one of them at a club once.

I don't know maybe you're right about extroverts being more diplomatic. I think that is more of an F thing than a i/e thing, tho. A lot of extravert's can be overbearing, domineering, and insensitive to others feeling-quite the opposite of diplomacy.

In the end- I honestly don't care either way. I don't really understand personality types. I don't even neatly fit into one.

yeeeeahhh, all that stuff you just said? Pretty much dead on. Warning: Pick a fight with an ENTP at your own risk.

ENTPs cannot muster up support behind the scenes like NFJs, eventually they will lose because even they can't fight everyone what with their tertiary egos.

Agree though, I have a cousin 2 years my senior who is an ENTP with anti-social tendencies and probably adhd. In any case I learned many useful techniques from him, then when I discovered MBTI it turned out these tricks were quite typical of ENTPs.

bold: fixed for accuracy

Reading people would be a sensor type "ability" and ESTP are the masters of this.

Better salesman ESTP or ENTP?

Good question. Personally, I think ESTPs would make better salesmen. I don't think ENTPs really enjoy selling shit.

And I believe both types are pretty good and reading people, ENTPs, I think, have a better knack for understanding a person on a deeper level, the inner workings and motivations of that person. While a Sensor may just read them, and read them well, just enough for working knowledge on dealing with them.

I would say an ESTP would read the person pretty well. An ENTP would troll better because they think of more possibilities in the idea of trolling someone. It is not the person the ENTP is reading it is the ideas that the person is presenting that they are reading.

Both have Aux Ti

ESTP is playing the man
ENTP is playing the idea

If you are great at playing the man, consider that you may not be an ENTP.

I disagree. While I do think ENTPs look for more patterns in a person's personality, which are abstract, they aren't entirely made up.

With "ENTP is playing the idea" it wouldn't explain why so many people are easily cut down and hurt by an ENTP. They must be hitting on truths.

I've been told this many times by friends when some other person comes along with my ball busting powers, that uses them on me in playful exchanges: Finally someone to take digitalbum's ballbusting away from me.

They say it jokingly, as I don't just constantly crap on my friends. Just a little ribbing here and there.

Edit: as a side note, it's relevant to add that those same friends (3 of them) that have mentioned similar things to me, are ESTPs.

@forget the sn

I'm out of my league on this topic- I'm not educated on mbti. I like to chime in anyway tho.

Anyway- we probably are referring to different things.

What is your definition of reading people? Body language, speech patterns, eye movements, etc?

Not what I meant but whatever.

How are you hurting them? Are you twisting their words? Anyway none of this matters. You see yourself as a people reader, how you get there and appear to others could be perceived as another "Type".

Wow a sensor (ESTP) being better at something cool/intelligent than a Intuitive. Oh noes.

Hey man...can you intuitively pick up on the despair of the upbeat, happy, smiling chick that takes your order at Wendy's?

That is what I was referring to.

If this is the case, within the context of the typology theory, have you considered that you could be an ESTP.

If you are playing the "person" and not the ideas they are presenting then you could be an ESTP.

Playing the person, using visual cues to make determinations about the person is using Se.

I'd agree that this sort of thing falls into the realm of the Ni,

But I'd disagree that it has much if anything to do with Ti or Fe so I'd suggest if you mean to imply this scenario is representative of your general condition (another Ni trait, by 'n 'by) ..

then I'd suggest you consider your functions to be some arrangement of Ni, Se, Te, Fi (like mine).

Technically wrong. False information.
Using visual cues which are readily apparent to gather information is using Se.

I stand corrected.

With that definition and use of Ni, you can play the person.

Haha, I love real world examples.

However, if she is in despair, I'm not sure how she could be upbeat and happy.

Unless you mean she's faking?

Difficult to fake, and I don't think I've ever come across an upbeat girl working at Wendy's. I HAVE regularly come across this dude at Taco Bell that was always friendly and positive. I didn't see any despair.

I'd say most cashiers I see at Wal-Mart, let's say, seem like they pretty much hate their existence, and have on many occasions mentioned as such "oohhhhh, just trying to make it through this day."

The ENTP exudes tremendous false confidence, but in reality has very few internal principles by which to check the opinions and perceptions of others against his own value system. He does lip service to a philosophy of integrity of independent thought, but in reality is a slave to the perceptions and expectations of others. He appears confident because he recognizes that confidence tends to favorably color the perceptions of others--or at the very least, provoke some sort of reaction, which will provide some form of feedback.

Wow a sensor (ESTP) being better at something cool/intelligent than a Intuitive. Oh noes.

So one example, and this wasn't even me, but it's something I would do.

And most of the time, it's calling out B.S. to our friends, we all do it to each other.

We're on my boat, and one of my buddy's is smoking a cigarette, and another buddy is like "hey dumbass, we don't smoke inside the boat" and the other buddy says "oh shut the fuck up, you do it all the time" and he literally pushes him over the boat into the water.

It was hilarious. And there was much rejoicing.

It's really more calling people out, OR if someone verbally attacks you, you fire back. And generally, it's just little things. While all this may sound ESTP, my approach can be similar, but while theirs can be more blunt force verbiage, mine is a little more scalpel shaped.

But fuck, I'm not claiming to know the truth, and really am only interested in sharing stories and experiences. Truth with a capital T has always been elusive, and few things are absolute, relatively speaking.

Ha, yeah, but I guess my point was that such a mask, I haven't seen it in fast food joints. Their pretty open bout they're misery.

But ya, think ima dip out this thread too. Too much "prove it" over and over and over. Like how many hairs can we split today?

Give me my minimal effective dose of understanding and I'll just keep my deeper thoughts to myself, and choose threads that are ya know, fun.

Vernacular Maoist returns to fuck with you some more.

Are you sure you were paid to teach English? Somebody should inform the authorities.

At least,... I dunno,... in the Western hemisphere, English teachers make sure not to mess that stuff up. No true English teacher confuses they're and their. (I'm half tempted to generalize this to NT types as well but I'm sure there are too many outliers such as yourself)

Sarcasm is a defensive maneuver used by thinkers.

A not getting out, is a generalization he has of introverts it seems.

From his perspective, if you were out having fun and living life, you wouldn't care so much about grammer.

A. I am an ENTP (sorry, ENFP, I forgot you know me better than myself). Plus, sarcasm is a great device to use when someone is trying to bait you into an argument so you can prove how right you are. Also, it shows that while you are correct, I really don't care.

B. You have literally combed through many of my posts to copy and paste grammatical errors. If that's not a colossal waste of time, I do not know what is.

Such are the results of Ni+Te/Fi when Fi gets to play. INTJs have duties, and they think they know people better than they know themselves. At the same time one cannot know if an INTJ is simply enjoying him/her self, finding a harmless outlet so to speak, or is genuinely bitter. One should not jump to conclusions, INTJs are complex, dominant Ni leads them to do things which may seem strange from an external perspective but actually make perfect sense.

Though the latter is something INFJ do as well, being better adopted for interpersonal matters they are typically more accurate when doing it however.

Edit: I seem to be on a preachy streak lol.

You're losing your mind. Sorry. I didn't know early onset dementia could happen so, well early.

Sarcasm is a defensive maneuver used by thinkers.

I see where you're going with this (obviously) and I reject it completely.

A. It (sarcasm) is also used by feelers

B. His form of sarcasm is not sophisticated enough to convey detachment; it's more personally fueled.

C. If it resembles any sort of psychic function at all, it most closely resembles extraverted thinking.

I refuse to budge on this. Auxiliary Fi.

It's not about knowing people better than they know themselves. That's not a valid analogy or comparison to draw. I know the MBTI better than he does though.

ENFPs are fucking champions of putting a personal spin on every sarcastic remark they're gonna make when being defensive. Making off-topic or side-armed remarks like "btw you don't get out much do you?" is a 100% ENFP thing to do, especially when it's irrelevant or used as a defensive technique. Also be wary for stabs at your sexuality - these are extremely common from ENFPs.

How many times can this ENFP say he doesn't care before he actually drops it? It will never happen because he must have the last word and it must make him feel like he was 'right'. I don't need that kind of validation. I will argue this point until you are all physically ill and can't stand the sight of my avatar or I will drop it knowing full well that I am right. However, what I won't do, is let somebody have the last word if it's going to be another bitchy remark about the quality of life I have. Because reasons.

I guess I'm just not really sure what your m.o. is. I don't understand what your general point is. Are you trying to logically prove to everyone/just me that I'm an ENFP? That I have bad grammar/spelling? That I have to have the last word? That my type has to have the last word? That you are an MBTI stud? I'm just confused by what you are trying to prove/not prove here.

I'm just confused by what you are trying to prove/not prove here.

Good question, thank you for keeping it together.

Answer:

I am not trying to prove you have bad grammar or spelling. That was my ice-breaker to see how you would react. Call it bait, if you want. The reason is that you can watch out for certain types of replies that help dictate the flow of conversation. If you would have not gotten bitchy about it from the get-go, I would have shown you more respect, for example, because I would have thought you were cool and not apt to get bitchy.

Am I trying to logically prove you are ENFP? No. It's an impossible feat. Other members are trying to get your back a bit and help you make your case for ENTP. If you haven't noticed, I've begun to reply to them instead. I am only really concerned with the truth. ((So if you give me a reason to think you are ENFP then I will think you are ENFP and I might tell you that I think you are ENFP and all you have to do is either ignore it, accept it, or prove me wrong)).

How much you feel like an ENTP or think you are is really not relevant to me as I rely mostly on my own perceptions. So are you thinking that perhaps I ought to change my tune just because the others whistle a little differently? Hell no. That's not the NT way. That's F from top to bottom. Maybe I should expand or develop my worldview somehow? Yes perhaps I could incorporate even more false information into my belief system than I am already naturally at risk for (this is multi-dimensional sarcasm that actually has a purpose in rhetoric unlike your version which is best suited to a teenage ESFP female on her period).

Attempts to prove you want the last word ... well no that's not my "M.O." either. It's just evidence and suppourt for my conclusions. It's just a fleeting response to your ongoing behaviour.

Am I trying to prove I am a MBTI stud?? lol. No I am not; that's retarded. Almost every prolific poster here knows almost everything there is to know about the MBTI so people rarely "have anything to prove" about it.

I'm just confused by what you are trying to prove/not prove here.

Well it's sort of become this way hasn't it? I'm in a situation now where I'm arguing a point so uh, logically, yeah .. .I'll be looking for ways to prove it. I've already explained that I wouldn't be arguing this point so vehemently if you would be more thoughtful in your replies. From what I can see, you've exhibited nothing but pure, unadulterated, butt-hurt sarcasm right from the first point of contact with me and then earnest attempts to connect on some emotional level with other posters (I can only guess this is to help gain suppourt and validation).

Sorry, let me just remind you now before you go crazy ... nobody said this is bad. I made sure to mention right at the beginning that it's not bad that you might be ENFP. NTs love NF personalities as long as we're not the targets of your whirlwind.

If you recall, I never suggested you were ENFP until after you replied to my first remarks about your misuse of the word "you're" given that you were an English teacher.

It's called a logical inconsistency - in that from my perspective, a true English teacher doesn't make those mistakes and is generally open to criticisms regarding their writing. In addition, these same traits are characteristic of most or all NT-types in my experience/opinion. You, however, made the mistake, said you didn't care about the mistake, and were very sensitive to the criticism and replied with personally fueled comments. So I suggested that maybe you weren't a thinking type, because from my pov... you use extraverted thinking as a rather inferior function. Of course I only have a bit of evidence... and you make such a strong counterpoint that I don't get out much and how I think I know other people better than they know themselves ... did I mention this is a classic defensive maneuver of the NF?

So, can you keep all that straight in your head as well?

Ha, ok man.

Not particularly convincing a case. Long post, little relevant content.

A case for what? It was a reply to his inquiry as to what I'm even doing. I was explaining my reasoning for my behaviour, not my reasoning for what I've typed him as.

I've already made my 'unconvincing' case to his ENFP-hood and honestly, that was so yesterday dude.

Now he's carrying on this conversation, by asking me to explain just what it is that I'm even trying to do here.

So I broke my activity down bit by bit to explain it to him. I started with the ice-breaker: "Are you sure you taught English?"

Things went south from there. I had no intent to prove anything at the start. I had no intent for anything at all. As you've already illustrated, there is a very fine line between playful provocation and genuine irritation/bitterness sometimes with that tert. Fi and it's really relying on the extraverted function to communicate properly.

What a waste of time explaining things to NFs. Fuck sakes. At the end of it all, after you've gone over every detail and rationalized every bit of your thought process, At their request, no less, all you get is a one-word dismissal. Once you piss them off, you can forget about accessing the thinking process.

okay point of it all being something unclear

Quit being stupid. The point is clear. I got dragged into this fucking flame -war over something incredibly trivial that any fucking person should be able to get over: a small dose of grammar-nazism (and type projection)

Wat I'm not pissed, fucken tertiary ti projection

Wasn't talking about you, guy.

There you go, NFs again, like I'm an NF. I know you included @cherry cola, but "you nfs"

Which brings me to totally other point, base groove, I don't even know your type. Seems like most peeps on here leave it off.

And for the record, I'm not pissed off.

If the one word dismissal is me you're talking about, it's cuz I still don't know
