My girlfriend and little brother have recently taken an interest back into the pokemon series and, as a result, I've been sucked back into it as well. I have all the new ones and a bunch of cool stuff in them. What do you want?

Damn I actually don't have squirts (I think).

I'm pretty sure I just have Bulbasaur from Prof Oak and haven't used him (In Heartgold, that is). I still actually have an old Venusaur from years ago in my Diamond's pc box. Transferred it from one of the old GBA games.

*checks game to see*

Yeah, I don't.

Yeah. You have to get all 16 badges and beat Ash trainer Red at Mt.Silver.
Then talk to Oak and he'll let you pick a starter poke.

Word of Caution: Red is the most powerful trainer in game history.
Be prepared.

I'm playing blue.

I meant to move right into Silver recently, in order to destroy Auburn, but my blue reset for the sixteenth time in my life. I went on hiatus while I awaited the time when I could afford a device to back up my saves. Then when I got it, I had to wait some more, because I gave my sp to Lor. :(

Now that I have both I'm starting my journey again. :D

I love my Cubone, Persian, Kabutops, Scyther, Charmeleon, and Raichu. With an interchangeable Haunter, Sandslash and Butterfree.

Just need to catch them again. :(

Gonna work my way up to the modern ones now that I have a console covering every generation...

I miss Red and Blue. Lv 250 Metwos FTW.

Hell, Lv 500 Cloysters FTW.

All courtesy of Cinnabar Island. :D

But yeah the series, battle wise, gets real post-third Generation.

I have HeartGold and believe it or not recently gotten into it, but I can't connect to wi-fi anymore for some reason.

But I look forward to playing with you all someday if it ever decides to work again... Sounds like it'll be fun..

I have a Charmeleon I'd be willing to trade, I suppose.

But it's the router I think that won't work. It just won't. The bars stay red then it won't connect, I tried the wi-fi at school and the bars will fluctuate from red to green but ultimately it'll say the connection test failed. I dunno... Sorry..

How many here actually own a system and play one of the newer generation games?

I got an itch to build a new team over the past few days, inspired by this thread and this link, which I have long been subscribed to.

If you guys get (are) any good, please let me know.

I'm currently on Pokemon Online, I get on sometimes to battle competitively. I mostly only play monotype (team of only one type) and challenge cup (random teams). I'm pretty good at both as I have been #1 on the ladder for both tiers numerous times.

And no, i dont have any systems I usually just play on emulators. I like the hacks that people come up with.

I've never played on an emulator, though I just watched my little brother play one of the 3rd gen games sometime last week.

I'm guessing you can't link any of that data/transfer anything to a DS system or anything like that. Do a lot of competitive guys use emulators? Not sure how that works.

I wish wi-fi worked

Currently trying to breed a Skarmory to have drill peck and roost, but i keep getting natures that aren't suitable for a Skarmory. On like the 5th egg. I'd like it to have a careful nature.. I actually caught a careful Skarmory but it doesn't have drill peck or roost and, you know, it can't learn those moves so you got to breed em into it. Yeah

I really enjoyed the battle element back in the day, but I have no patience for training/breeding. If I have have played any longer than I did I would have bought a gameshark to get rid of all the bullshit timewasting and battle confounds.

I heard some of the newer games have changed the physical/special system away from being element type based (e.g. you can have physical water moves now), this would make a lot of shit pokes rather amazing.

I guess, but it actually makes more sense now to have attack/special attack & defense/special defense.

And there's only like two physical water moves, one being the HM Waterfall and the other I can't remember because I'm not sure if there is another one. The one physical fire move I know of is flare blitz, which causes recoil damage, and yeah, you wouldn't want, say, Charizard or Typhlosion to have those (if they could even learn them).. Because, well, yeah.
I have a Tentacruel that has low special attack but high attack so I taught it Waterfall, which is the only water move it has. No biggie. If I want something with surf or hydro pump, shit, I'll get a Blastoise for that.
Infernape is fire/fighting, so why would you want it to have a special fire attack (unless the particular nature it has is a SA boosting one, well sure)? Might as well give some physical attack moves, which really suits it better if you think about it.

It's a big deal because you can now grab on-type move (grabbing the +%50 dmg bonus for on type moves) for monsters that have Att/SpA that is off type. I haven't played any of the new games that implement this, but thinking back to stuff like Gengar who couldn't use ghost moves because he had no attack, and gyrados who was better off not taking surf/hydro pump because he had only average SpA, it looks like a lot of previously under-powered monsters will be much stronger now.

Maybe not much stronger, but that probably helps em out a bit.. There are still other factors that balance/de-balance things out, which is the case with many games and their updates/DLC; etc whatever.. For the record, breeding and EV training are somewhat annoying, yes, but they have a better payoff since they've been introduced.. I remember the carefree days of Gold/Silver where that wasn't much of a worry though..

By the way, I have access to wi-fi now, probably temporary though but we won't get into that.. If anyone wants to trade/battle, friend code is: 4599 5077 4525

Do no underestimate the increase in dmg output. A Genger who was forced to use moves like psychic as a basic dmg move (base dmg = 90) to take advantage of his high SpA, can now use ghostball or it's equivelant ((base dmg = 85) x 1.5 = 122.5) instead.
-
If you worry about the small difference EV control makes on output, a 35% increase in dmg output should have you over the moon.
-
I don't like EV's whether they represent general increase in power to reward excessive training vs weak pokes, or an incredibly user unfriendly system for customisation in the later versions.

You're referring to "STAB" moves? Kinda interesting, I look at them as "signature moves" (wonder why Arcanine doesn't get stab with ExtremeSpeed though), but yeah I can see why they would be cheap. Almost makes you want to make sure whatever Pokemon you have has its stab attacks.. Yeah...

Because arcanine isn't type normal (also it's already incredibly powerful and doesn't need a bonus). It's not to do with signature moves, it's just elemental affinity. A water monster is good at making water attacks etc. There is nothing cheap about it. Without 'Same Type Attack Bonus' there would be no connection between attack type and monster type.

Speaking of arcanine, is there any powerful physical fire attacks? Not that his SpA is underwhelming but his attack is obscene and I always preferred specialised sweepers.

In high-school I used to get my lunch every day with the TCG, both winning games and trading. Then people stole my cards so I starved :(

Oh, I was under the impression stab stood for something else, so now, in hindsight, had I known what it stood for, it makes sense. So Gengar getting a bonus for using shadow ball is legit.
Flare Blitz is one, there's another one called Flame Wheel I believe but it's 'inferior' to Blitz because it has lower attack, although blitz causes recoil damage so it depends on which move you prefer really.
