I think it has happened. I never though it would. I am now absolutely terrible at competitive computer gaming. Is this common as one grow older?

If you want to be a good gamer, stick with just one game for as long as possible.

To compete good you need a few hundred hours of playing a game.
A good screen and a good mouse help too.

I was pretty damn good at sc2 six months ago but then I stopped playing because it got boring. Now my friends are all playing and they're kicking my noob ass. The lag here is too high to play fps. All games got rid of lan.

The break is hurting you. You get better when you play more (also apparently low voltage applied across the brain improves gaming skillz, but that's a little more complicated).

Wish I could still find the link for that.

I don't see where you went wrong then.

He might have been playing something other than GoW.

A lot has changed in the last 6 months. Your learned hotkey responses have weakened, the meta game has changed, unit balance has changed, maps have changed, technology has been removed, your friends have got better and your general understanding of the game has probably worsened. It is no surprise your friends are beating you, particularly if you play zerg (do you?). How good were you, and how good are your friends? If you play at a high level I would be stupefied if you didn't get creamed.

For example: My boyfriend was and still is the best of all of us (and everyone we've met that plays) SuperSmash in all it's forms. He simply cleans everyone's clock every time. If you win it's either because everybody ganged up on him the entire time (which still generally doesn't work) or because he feels bad and lets you win. He'll play as various characters that are considered impossible to give himself a challenge and he still beats us all. He did basically nothing but eat, breath, and play those games for 4 years in college and high school.

As for SC, same thing. Lots and lots of practicing. However, if you go from SC2 to something else (such as DA2 or even Gow) you might find that you need a different skill set and the skill set you developed in SC2 actually makes it more difficult for you to do well in other games.

Also, if you've taken a break and now everybody is beating you it may just be that phenomenon known as not being in the zone. You may be over thinking it which is easy to do in SC2.

My boyfriend talks games a lot with me. :o

I've honestly found just the opposite. As a teen I was a pretty decent gamer. After many years, and not picking up the controller nearly as much, I find myself to be better now than I once was.

Plat's pretty high, especially for someone possessing the ability to get bored with the game, as this indicates your rank is dependent on innate skill, rather than obsessive practice and analysis (such as mine). I don't think it reflects badly on your skill level at all that you are worse after six months, I'm shit after two weeks.

@ Awaken: So true. If ever I do play the game again I will play protoss, and I will be going straight to masters thankyou. They are so easy to play! their cheese options are fun as hell too.

I don't know what age you are, but I heard something about the age for your response time declining is 24. There are a lot of crazy good gamers who seem to not care about this at all (July and White_Ra anyone?). Six months would not be long enough for you to be significantly impaired due to your age anyway.
