I personally like a bit of everything but am not addicted to or hate a particular artist or genre. However recently classical music has started appealing to me?
I find it just stimulates me and can get me concentrated and thinking for hours on end.

I prefer jazz to classical, there's just more color and emotion. Whereas classical is more drawn out and not as effective in its attempts to captivate, at least to me.

I enjoy most genres, but I personally choose to exclude black metal and pop rap/rock.

Black metal is alright in moderation and the right mood. My music exclude list basically includes rap (though I listen to it too on occasion), country, and the majority of electronic music.

Now... as to the genres I most listen to: Metalcore, deathcore, hardcore, alternative rock, post-rock, death metal, post-hardcore, and more. There is a very high chance that anything I listen to from those genres is experimental, progressive, or technical, or even melodic. Generic music bores me. Fusion genres are cool. Weird, experimental stuff that melds vastly different genres together coherently is cool. I need to get into post-rock and classical more.

The only black metal I like is Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost, but then again, how can you not like Don't Break The Oath and Morbid Tales? I also like a Venom song or two, but that's really it; the general style of black metal doesn't do much for me. I'm still open to suggestions, but I won't go venturing out into the woods myself.

Actually, I'd be inclined to agree. i listen to black metal rarely, like I said, if I'm in the mood for it, but I listen to a symphonic black metal band or two as well.

I love all kinds of music. I've been on a Jethro Tull/Beastie Boys kick recently, but more generally I like classic rock and psychedelia, funk, blues, jazz, some metal (stoner/doom, thrash), old-school rap, and some electronica (mostly psytrance). I'll listen to anything that catches my ear really.

Once you start listening to classical music, you never stop.

Ever since discovering composers like Rachmaninoff and Scriabin i haven't been able to enjoy any other forms of music.

I definitely would not say I like 'all music' as some suggest. I think there is some underlying theme my ear listens out for which ties my collection, but I have not identified it yet.

I'm currently listening to Jazz Fusion [Mostly Miles Davis and Mahavishnu Orchestra] and Post-Rock [mostly Mogwai and Godspeed you Black Emperor]. My favorite band is likely King Crimson as they are the only band I have consistently listened to for the last few years.

Let me take a shot in the dark and say:

  1. varying tempos/structures, eclecticism, randomness
  2. ominous chords, logical progression, unchanging overtones

Jam bands!!!
:smoker:
For example: phish, umphreys mcgee, Keller williams.
Jazz is also one of my favorite genres, mostly the more experimental stuff though.
You guys ever listen to Medeski Martin and Wood? Great jazz trio

Rock and Metal mostly. I tend to prefer avant-garde and progressive bands.
To be more specific, I love bands like Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Riverside, Fates Warning, Opeth, Agalloch, Blut Aus Nord, Katatonia, Emperor, Ulver etc.
For the last 2 years I've been really into black metal.
My taste is quite varied though, I enjoy a lot of genres, including: pop, rap, trip-hop, electronica, trance, ambient, folk, classical, jazz, swing, blues, post-rock, new wave etc.

Ok, this just makes me seem like a music nerd and/or a pretentious fag :o
Let's just say that I listen to metal 90% of the time, these days. :smoker:
But seriously, I'm open to pretty much everything out there. The only musicians I really dislike are certain metal bands and a few shitty pop "artists".

That sounds a fair assessment Eyeseecold, I'd add dissonance to the list.

TOOL? Lustmord? Phillip Glass? Holst? The soundtrack from The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland?

You're going to be a tool of non-committal intpiquity for the rest of your life. Here's a chance to take a break...

What was the most recent musical composition you premeditatedly listened to?

^ Meant for me ?

Kinda all over the place. I suppose it could be said that when out genre-whoring, I tend to favor the stoner/drone streetcorner, but that might also just be my way of always returning home.
A pathetically incomplete sample OTTOMH...
I can binge on stoner rock and fuzzy/trad doom for days. :smoker:

I'm in a similar boat if anything i'd classify my interest in music as developing... if that makes any sense

Genres I'm generally interested in: Industrial, alternative, progressive rock and metal, synthpop, dance punk, rave, acid house, nerdcore and alternative hip-hop, some poppunk, synthpunk, nu metal

Bands I've been enjoying lately: Cake, Gnarles Barkley, Tool, OK Go, Pomplamoose, Slipknot, Deathstars, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Slipknot, Skinny Puppy, Angelspit, Wolfmother, The Faint, Electric 6, Incubus, and Muse

I'm having trouble keeping the list down so I'll leave it at that...

I have a really, really, really broad taste. I can appreciate almost anything, but here are some of my favorites. I tend to like indie rock the most I think. According to all my friends I often listen to gay music. Oh and I can appreciate some stoner/doom metal here and there occasionally.

A parallel dimension of a thinker's creation
From a female INTP? I listen to INFP singer, songwriter, harpist and pianist Joanna Newsom. She's amazing. She and Andrew Bird are probably my favorite singers.

That being said, I have an addiction to Muse.

People look at me like I'm nuts when I say that, because I'm the girl with glasses sitting in the corner, staring at the teacher, and looking innocent. Or maybe I'm the one with the twisted mind and a knack for open sarcasm. Depends which class I'm in. Either way, I'm the intellectual. I'm not supposed to like rock music. Phooey. It's good music.

I'd have to say I enjoy orchestral music. soft classical music doesn't really do it for me, but I really enjoy epic orchestral compositions.(Czech philharmonic chamber orchestra!) I also for some reason enjoy techno/electronica, which is almost the opposite. I also like some pop, I really like powerful voices, I cant stand rap and metal though. Most pop bores me, oh and I also enjoy soft jass/blues. It's calming yet depressing at the same time.

Metal (Burzum, Morbid Angel, diSEMBOWELMENT type stuff); some classical/early music, but not a huge amount; have in the past listened to a lot of 90's emo and hip hop; some electronic, ambient, bits of indie.

Anything highly spirited.

All sorts. I love strong female vocalists. I guess most would consider my music as mainstream or pop but I dabble in everything. I like House, alt-rock and some older stuff. Honestly there is very few music that I dislike straight away but I love music where the emotion bleeds through or it's got some strong bass.

I do not really have any favourite genres, although I listen to relatively much Black Metal. I tend to dislike Rap, Country and "Volkstümliche Musik" (mostly purely commercial music which combines the most horrible elements from pop, easy listening and folk; be glad if you don't know it). Other than those, I listen to pretty much everything, be it Breakcore, Ambient, Industrial, Baroque music, Noise, Folk, Classic Rock, Electroclash, Gaynigger Metal or whatnot.

I dabble in a variety of different genres, focusing on one pretty intensely for a short period of time before, studying and learning about out the prominent influences related to it as well as the subculture, and then when I've either burned myself out or soaked up a sufficient amount of information, I move on to something new and restart the process.

Folk music, be it "pure" Folk music or Folk Metal.

I also enjoy listening to other Metal genres, such as Power, Heavy, Symphonic and Avant-garde Metal.

I'm currently listening to a Russian band named Arkona, which I recommend to everyone that also likes the genres I mentioned before.

Hey Arkona is beautiful I love it! I enjoy a broad range of music, but mostly I don't like pop or R&B. I prefer... I think the term 'gypsy music' is probably not accurate, but that kind of stuff. Anything which builds into a big crescendo. Or has strong emotions. Fast and loud, slow and strong... Anything with good trumpets... musicals...

I'll put a couple of links to what I've been listening to.

Ska-punk, Joanna Newsom, and odds and ends from all over the place. Especially really campy odds and ends like cheesy symphonic metal songs and Michael Buble. Oh, and soundtracks.

The music-pirating tool I have most used is not bitTorrent or whatever, but it is video2mp3, which is an online application that can let you download the audio of a YouTube video. I think most of the songs on my list are from that.

My generation has a different taste in music than yours.

I've heard it said that you will still be listening to the same music in your 50's that you listened to in your 20's.

This was b4 your time ... as we old-timers say ... back when music was music.

I usually have to listen to it before I can judge whether I like it or not. However if its mainstream pop that's played twice an hour on American radios, I will most likely not like it.

Music I've enjoyed in recent months has been progressive metal, progressive rock, and symphonic metal. Like Dream Theater, Symphony X, and Queensryche.
I'm usually open with genres though. I get a kick out of new stuff too.

Here is a South Park clip that is relevant

:D I suppose it's true that every generation says that about the one that follows. However, there was a time b4 "the music died" when even the quality of Devious' mainstream music was much higher. But that was b4 the sun went down. ;)

The scary part of it is that the kids today have been brought up in the night ... with night music. Before the sun went down, the quality of mainstream music was pretty good:
