Like you most likely have noticed we had yet another throwback and all postings and changes of the last ~2 weeks have been deleted.
Also, no day is passing by without at least one server breakdown. The flash chat is defect and the board software is bugged and outdated.
The problem is that our main admin, Ragnar, who could change this is unavailable for months and most likely we won't be able to reach him at all.
The forum in its current condition is, to make it short, a disaster. The whole situation is as bad as bad can be.

Though there is a solution. We can make a back-up of the actual state and then upload it on another server. I have one, where I momentarily host the board of my old guild but it is no longer in use.
This would actually solve all the problems except that I'm not sure if our old postings are really 100% compatible with a modern board software but the website suggest that it does.

Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?

I thought that wasn't an option, either, unless Ragnar became available to facilitate it?

I'm probably in the minority, but I really wouldn't have any problem editing tons of posts to make them compatible with updated software. I put some music on and just zen out while I do it, but that's just me... (If there was a compatibility issue.)

I asked Jesin about that today and he said that making a back-up is possible without Ragnar's help.
From what I know about forums it should be possible to integrate a backup into another forum and even one with a a different board software which is actually quite awesome.

But this is only for the worst case that Ragnar is completely unavailable.

I appreciate your help nonetheless. :)

I was going to suggest we move on masse to another forum, then "encourage" all the existing members to leave via organised trolling, effectively claiming it as our own.

Some may call it an invasion, I call it liberation :D

Hmm. Even so, I may have come across ragnar elsewhere on the net and am pending a response from him. I can't give anymore details until I know if it is him, but I'm not sure if that should affect the decision.

I'm for an invasion..er, move. Whatever we do, we can't stay here and tolerate this much longer. INTP decision making time (this should be interesting)!

i like this upgrade - will it solve the problems?

I have absolutely no idea since I am unaware through my prolonged withdrawal of what the problems are. I suddenly decided to upgrade today for two reasons, though not having seen the place once beforehand for months and months. One was a sudden emergence from stasis; the other was it was something that suddenly had to be done --- I devoutly combine the irrational with the rational.

As I mentioned in the fleeting announcement, ASO --- 'A Small Orange' --- is a decent hosting company, and we have masses of space: however, they are starting to get a lot of outages, and at the start of the month came under a severe ddos attack which crashed many servers. I am considering a move, but nearly all hosting companies seem much the same. Mimicking politicians' promises in both that delivery is singularly uncertain and even less sincere.

The upgrade ought to fix any database problems; but the hosting remains an uncertain quantity.

Ah... 'tis the hosting now that is an issue...

folk are tired of daily outages and the most recent crash took with it two weeks of posts and pms.

Hmm... so ASO is being targeted?

And changing hosts or getting ASO to move us to another server wouldn't certainly alleviate the problem?

*thinks*

The mordantly inclined may care to peruse threads from A Small Orange's own forums.

This litany of woe --- and wow --- 'ASO Hacked ?'comes to 23 pages so far:
http://forums.asmallorange.com/index.php?showtopic=12905

With autopager enabled upon Firefox, that is one mother of a thread.*
( Note that intpforum.com is Autopager enabled, should one consider this excellent extension. )

and, from 'Change of Server ?':
http://forums.asmallorange.com/index.php?showtopic=12942

"The targets were seemingly random. Moving to another server would not have changed that. We were forced to null route some of our IP addresses to keep service available for others."

Plus: "I didn't find that post informative, but okay."

*BTW, Firefox ran at the speed of light during the upgrade, due entirely to disabling all plugins. The sloth Firefox customarily displays seems generally to be down to the mere presence of the Flashplayer. Which with Flash being an ineluctable part of the web illustrates perfectly that all improvements make us just as tiny squirrels running in a wheel.
