I've been meaning to get better at this, so I need a place to put my progress. Also sometimes I just don't know what to do, so I can collect suggestions here.

I'm starting my practice first by copying existing photographs. That way I can concentrate on mastering the basic techniques instead of worrying about the content's creativity, composition, etc.

I have a blank canvas and use the original as a reference to copy, yes.

Of course! Of course it takes time to make it, depending on complexity and RL responsibilities.

I can't see how one could try to get the shapes right without focusing on angles and such..

I think ze meant like, breaking out ruler and protractor tools and measuring that way.

This is basically standard INTP artist type work. Either the INTP is absurdly good at art or they have trouble drawing basic shapes.
