The Bible

It defines Self, as the concept has been used in Western civilization for thousands of years.

There could be a companion text, that describes self, from a Eastern perspective, perhaps in the tradition of Buddha

a psychological perspective (or two) can be found within this

Self and Identity
Four-Volume Set

Although the study of the ‘Self’ has been a major theme throughout the history of psychology, it has really come in its own during the last half century. Because the nature of human selfhood remains both fascinating and elusive, many different approaches and contributions have been scattered through the journals over the years. This four-volume collection brings together a diverse assortment of the most important contributions in this area.

The collection includes classic, groundbreaking articles and recent, cutting-edge advances in articles that range from original, empirical investigations to conceptual pieces that build theory based on integrative reviews of the research literature.

The intention is to provide a broad resource that can be used by both beginners and experts worldwide who wish to have strong, useful access to the classic contributions to this area of study in one place. The field of ‘Self’ is particularly difficult to gain entry to, particularly because it has such a rich and varied history. The two editors are both well versed in the study of ‘Self’ and thus well qualified to provide a map of articles that have lasting importance and influence.

I used it for a paper or two, but I did not read all of it. I simply do not agree with a lot of the POVs presented, so I just said 'Meh!' and skipped those...

An Austrian Perspective on the History of Economic Thought By Rothbard is a good read.

The Highly Sensitive Person

As they are described in this book, I find the details of the trait of high sensitivity more salient for me than those of introversion, which seems incredibly hard to pin down. Ask 10 people to define introversion, and you'll get 12 different answers. The parameters of sensory processing sensitivity, as it is more formally known, seem more well defined by many orders of magnitude.

A key point of this book is that, in a nonsupportive culture such as ours, most highly sensitive people (HSPs) become introverts as a matter of necessity. It is likely that not all introverts are HSPs, however. I know lots of people I would consider introverts whose emotional responses are far more moderate than mine.
