That may have more to do with you genes (at least with alcohol.) I know INTPs are supposed to get more pleasure than most types when smoking weed. Except for the coke the other substances are depressants. They probably help calm you and give you more a a sense of well-being than you paranoia would otherwise allow. (you said in another post you were paranoid.)

I don't get addictedd to anything. At all. I've socially smoked during college. Never craved the stuff. I can go any amount of time without drinking any form of alcohol. I've smoked pot numerous times with friends and family, but never felt like I needed it. In fact, I think it has less effect on me than most, contrary to Kaedri's post. I also don't get addicted to any kind of food or anything.

It may not be addiction, which is chemical dependency.

I read once where the INTP dark side creates a predisposition to mitigate boredom or unpleasantness or chronic dissatisfaction with habitual, but not addictive, overindulgence in such things as drinking. If you're going from one thing to another -- switching from overindulgence in alcohol to something else, for instance -- it's probably not classic addiction.

Interestingly enough many of these substances lower inhibitions and permit our underdeveloped functions to take over. We are, I believe, pretty much maudlin drunks, emotions we'd never let out of the bag while sober running amok through our psyche. Well, let me rephrase that: I'm quite sure I was a maudlin drunk etc. However I gave it up because I was bored with it.

It sounds very much like you're trying to understand yourself and this tendency, so I'm going to do the grown-up thing and suggest you seek appropriate counseling, somebody who, when you ask "INTP spoken here?" responds "You betcha" or something. In the wrong hands you'll become fodder for the mills of the psychology gods, which grind so exceedingly fine you'll emerge as a flat, two-dimensional caricature of yourself covered with greasy dust.

It would be more habit than addiction for me; and I've have a few habits. I don't like to feel a need to consume a substance, and when I start feeling a need I usually drop it.

Alcohol maybe. But it's kind of normal around here.. drink while going out and all. From 14...till, I don't know..you die:rolleyes: (young probably)
sometimes I even drink with my parents (they gave me the evil gene in the first place). but I'm not an alcoholic if you think that.

besides that, I'm not addicted at all. well..maybe chocolate.:D

I used to be addicted to cigarettes, weed, cookies and anything sugar.

That was all part mental, part physical, all of those things have addictive chemical reactions in the brain.

I am addicted to internet, and have a slight compulsive eating problem when I'm bored.

I agree with others that it doesn't sound like addiction in the technical sense. I've been through everything you describe (and a wee bit more) and for me they were more masking agents than anything else. Wanting to feel or be something other than what I was. If when you do decide to give something up and it is easier than what others go through, then the addiction isn't chemical. It's not really addiction but rather wanting to be something else. That's what it was for me anyway. Once I realised it, I quit doing those things except on rare occasions (like one or twice a year tops).

I was going through very painful time in 2007. and first part of '08. Time of my great unrequited love. and literally, I wanted to take anything that would ease the pain I felt (constant crying, wanting to disappear). alcohol, drugs, whatever.
and for few moments it would be ok. not good, but acceptable.
but after..oh good, one of the worst moments ever. chemical stuff can be dangerous when you are depressed. it can be devil itself.

Sugar. Duh. I consume some every day. Probably not on the healthy side, but I don't recognize it as an addiction, at least not a chemical one. I merely have a somewhat oversized sweet tooth.

That is a wonderful analogy.

I guess you could say i was "addicted" to lime and salt when I was little. I used to cut a lime in half, hide under my blanket with a salt shaker, and suck away...haha that sounds deerrtyy

Could you maybe give me a source on that?
That sounds like me 100%. I always figured it was because I have a more entertaining imagination than other people. But if it's another reason, I'd like to know.

I think all types may be attracted to substance abuse for their own unique reasons. SPs may simply be experience-junkies who feel a need to try everything once. SFJs might want to do it to "fit in" or because it's "what the cool kids are doing." INTPs likely aren't interested in that, but are more likely to be interested in the consciousness-expanding properties of drugs. We may see drugs as one big consciousness experiment; almost as a form of first-hand information gathering, with life as the laboratory. We may also drink heavily to fit in with social circles we normally don't just to see what it's like (kinda like spying on the enemy ;)). Curiosity, boredom, and a lack of commitments (unlike J-types) are likely what may drive us to substances.

However, I'd say we're probably less likely to become easily addicted, although we may lack the willpower of a, say, INTJ, if we happen to become addicted and try to quit. Obviously genetic factors are what primarily determine tendency to addiction, but strictly on type alone, I'd say our tendency to become easily bored with things would seem to generally discourage the forming of addictions.

Personally, I've never been addicted to anything, although I have found it hard to change my sleep habits when I have to. Like REALLY hard. Like it makes me feel like I'm sick. I drink coffee, but can go weeks without it no problem. My parents have always been addicted to coffee though, and "have" to drink it daily.

I'd say my Ti is much too active to let me unwillingly become an addict, as I'm always super-aware of what I'm doing at all times.

I agree with 100% of what echoplex said.
I have nothing to add, because what you said could have just as easily flowed out of my brain as it flowed out of yours.
I just wanted you to be aware of that.

After thinking about it, I'd say you are right. All the things I did that were not chemically addictive, I got bored of it after about a year (weed...etc).

But I noticed that the cocaine and cigarettes were really hard. The alcohol...I was easily able to cut back...

Well thanks for the input guys. :)

Wow SlyGuy you and me would be some serious trouble together, we are exactly the same here and I mean to a T. Well except for the dirty liaisons and pillow talk with your citrus buddies there, though I do love anything with a salt/lime/citrus/vinegar/garlic taste to it and find myself getting addicted to one brand of chip or snack occasionally till I can kick it.

And whoever said that thing about INTPs reacting more to THC, I would love some sources on that as well because I have totally noted this with myself. I can undergo heavy and I mean vivid and acute visual/audible and extra sensory hallucinations/manifestations when I am high!

Don't start smoking. That is the dumbest thing ever to do. 100% of all smokers regret starting. I guarantee you that. It makes you more tired and slower. Don't think you won't get addicted. It's a chemical addiction, not a mental one. I know there are no physical withdrawals, but when I try quitting my lungs actually hurt. Like really really hurt. But I did smoke a pack and a half a day.

I have smoked fairly regularly with partners in the past, but only when with them. I did not experience any urge to smoke when not with them. If I wasn't so bad at long term relationships, I would probably have become addicted :D . Butterflies don't get lung cancer, see.

Same here, although not just with partners but with friends. I was, and still kind of am, a "social smoker". Like a social drinker, I only smoke when around certain people and it's just for fun. I never feel any cravings and I can go from smoking several cigs a day to smoking none for a month with no problem.

Hell, I actually have more trouble starting again than I do stopping, what with the nausea and dizziness that comes with smoking a whole cigarette after not smoking for a long time.

I am more careful when it comes to drinking, as I've seen the effects of alcoholism, which, in my opinion, are far worse than those of cigarette addiction. Of course, that doesn't stop me from having a good time when I visit my friends in Germany. :D

I have kicked most of my addictions since joining this forum! Hooray!. Looking back at my posts (these were times when I was still withdrawing from certain drugs) they seem so childish and unorganized.
