INTP, INTJ, or something else?

I posted this in typology central first but more input is never bad.

I don't know what type I am. I've taken lots of tests, and the most common result is INTP. Even though I identify a lot with the INTP type, I've found myself displaying characteristics of ENTJs, ENTPs, INTJs, ENTPs, and even INFJs.

I'll start with the first letter: I/E

I would describe myself as introverted, but not shy. I handle myself pretty well social situations, unlike my INTP friends, who seem to be less "aware" of other's feelings and thoughts. This overlaps with the N/S and F/T part, but I think that one of my strengths is the ability to intuitively "feel" what another person is thinking and feeling at any given moment. I can't utilize this very well, though, since, even though I'm not "shy", I get pretty anxious in social situations, simply because it takes a lot of energy out of me, especially if it's with someone I'm unfamiliar with. I rarely initiate any social interaction; rather, I let it come to me. I am also somewhat afraid of being rejected, which means I never ask anyone to hang out with me or to do something for me, not because I care what they think of me, but because I'll look foolish in front of others. I'm very good at making people think a certain way about me. I also really dislike it when people pity me or feel sorry for me, which is why I never share my feelings with others, unless they're a close friend. I'm sort of rambling at this point but I hope you get a picture of this aspect of my personality.

N/S:

This is the only letter that I'm absolutely certain about. In addition to the "intuition" I talked about last paragraph with regards to social situations, my thought process is also very non-linear. I noticed recently that I don't think in words. Rather, my thought process is made up of visual things and "shades" or "vibes", which I'll talk about later. When it comes to visual things, this is a good example: When I was reading about how dysfunctional families tend to produce more dysfunctional families, I saw a child as some sort of stretchy material with a small blot of ink in the middle, and when it increased in size, so did the blot of ink ("symbolizing" a child growing into an adult). This showed that most of our values and system of morality is developed in childhood. This isn't something that I do consciously; it just happens. Another example would be a video game glitch on my PC where all sorts of numbers and foreign polygons would appear on my screen. I read that this is caused by overheating, which I thought was cool; in my head, I imagined a video card becoming so hot that it melted and all the various code and data got mixed together like melting Neopolitan ice-cream. I didn't actually "visualize" it happen, I just "sensed" it. This is sort of hard to explain, but I hope you at least somewhat understand what I'm trying to say. Another example: I was reading about scientific racism and how proponents of it were trying to limit interracial marriages because even one interracial child, provided he bred with other whites, would eventually, provided enough generations, poison the entire gene pool (I don't believe in this, by the way.) I "visualized" a drop of really powerful poison falling into a huge body of water, tainting it forever. (Again, I'm not racist at all, this is what they thought, not me.) I'll talk about "vibes" in the next section. I'm not at all interested in sports or anything like that.

T/F:

I'm interested in science, mathematics, and history, but part of why I am interested in them is because they inspire a sense of awe in the case of physics and math, and a vicarious experience in the case of history. When I read about a time period in history, I feel a sort of zeitgeist-esque thing that's pretty powerful, almost overwhelming. It's palpable. This is strongest with Ireland during the Troubles, the Soviet Union in the '80s and '90s, the United States during the '60s, and others. Still, I'm a very logical person; I tend to beat almost everybody when it comes to debates involving politics or philosophy. I like to think I'm a good writer (Don't use this post as an example), but a lot of literature to me feels arbitrary and the kind of in-depth analysis that academics often do as absurd. How are people analyzing characters who aren't even real? How do you know whether the author meant this when they wrote whatever? Dealing with arbitrariness is a big problem in my life. I can never play chess, for example, because it's arbitrary; there's no real reason why the rook can do this and the bishop can do that. If the rook moved a different way then the entire game would be different. In the last year I've become a nihilist when it comes to morality and epistemology. I'm not "depressed", but I am pretty cynical about everything. I love to offend stuck up people. I have a hard time doing things I don't like. I hate institutionalized education. Even though I'm pretty intelligent, my grades are terrible, mainly because the system is so incredibly stupid and inefficient. I'll elaborate later, since I already wrote way too much.

P/J:

My hands are tired from typing, so I'll keep this short. I'm very disorganized and absentminded, especially when bored or unmotivated. I don't think I have any "J" traits, other than maybe being determined. I'm not at all a hard worker. I am pretty assertive, though.

seems like core INTP. it helps to develop some relation to all those other characteristics, to be more able and versatile. the abstract/symbolic association patterns definitely seem INTP.

I/E and J/P aren't testable dichotomies.

Andropov, tests aren't a very reliable way to discover your type because they rely too much in the self assessment factor. Taking into account that these tests are binary (You're either a T or a F, either a N or a S), more balanced individuals will probably be mistyped.

I suggest you to learn about the functions in depth, and see what works for yourself. That way you'll be able to understand more about the theory and yourself.

But keep in mind that you can't find your type through introspection only. You must also notice what behaviours are you displaying when dealing with the real world, so you can understand your introverted and extroverted parts of self.

And finally, don't fall into the trap that only your top two functions are important. You should learn to deal with the other aspects of your personality if you want to become a more aware individual.

I would guess INFJ from the description provided.

Particularly:

"one of my strengths is the ability to intuitively "feel" what another person is thinking and feeling at any given moment"

"Rather, my thought process is made up of visual things and "shades" or "vibes""

You could be a less sociable ENTP like I am.

ENTPs and ENTJs can be frankly, pretty shitty at being extroverted in the MBTI sense.

Also you said the only thing you were really sure about is your N which if you were an ENTP would be your primary function. INTPs have Fe in the fourth slot while ENTPs have it in the third slot.

I, for instance, am an ENTP with NF parents and an SF brother who always assumed I was an NF because of my relatively strong (hopefully) Fe. Maybe another good test would be "do you find it hard to pass judgement on anyone?" ENTPs can usually justify anything logically, while INFJs (correct me anyone if I'm wrong) usually have clearly defined moral codes which upsets them if someone goes against that code.

From your T/F description you sound like you're more on the Ti/Fe spectrum than the Te/Fi spectrum which would make me think NTP and not NTJ.

You could be an INFJ as suggested above or an ENTP, or anything. I agree that you should research the jungian cognitive functions to help decide between Ne or Ni which would help you decide between ENTP or INFJ respectively.

I guess it depends. Do you think your sense of humour is more in line with an INTPs or INTJs? This should give you a definitive answer.

My functions, in order of strength, are as follows:

Ni, Ti, Ne, Fi, Fe, Te, Si, Se.

That doesn't make sense according to the logical of typology, though.

How do you know this? Is this based on the results of some test?

If so, that doesn't really mean anything.

They're the functions I identify with the most.

All right, here's the bare fucking bones of this shit:

I test as INTP, but I share many INTJ traits, namely assertiveness, confidence, and unwillingness to compromise. I also have a high Ni. In contrast to most INTPs I know, I'm not at all pedantic and hate when people are. I also don't identify with the "geek" subculture or whatever you want to call it, unlike the INTPs I'm familiar with. Still, I identify with the INTP description pretty strongly as well. What am I? Are there any clues that can tell me which type I am which wouldn't depend on observer bias? Like, can you tell my type by my writing style or by the posts I've made on this forum? What about mannerisms? I tend to clasp my hands together in front of my body often. I don't know what else... Should I post a picture of myself smiling? A video of myself?

A video of myself?
Send one to Pod'lair.

I'm sure you can probably find INTPs who match the descriptions you gave, even if it's not common. I don't think brief descriptions of behaviour are ever able to distinguish your type with near 100% accuracy. After reading people's posts on this forum, do you identify with their way of thinking? How does it compare to INTJ forums? and so on for other potential types. Are you sure that you understand the functions well enough to know whether or not you use them?

With apologies to Artsu, with whom I agree that short descriptions of behavior aren't enough to tell, I'll mention short descriptions of behavior anyway.

I don't see a contradiction in a non-geeky, self-confident INTP.

As an INTP married to an INTJ, and with several friends of each of those two types, I have my own ideas on how to tell.

1. Do you make detailed and ambitious checklists before you get going on a project? (Doesn't matter if you get stuff done.) Which of these two lists appeals to you more?

a. Ralph's - toilet paper, chocolate sauce
Dry cleaner - blue suit, 2 white shirts
Health Food Store - Vitamin C, flax meal
Library - return books
Sears - 10 pairs white athletic socks
Mom's - fix computer

OR

b. Pick up stuff for dinner - chicken?

2. Which method of procrastinating a decision appeals to you more:
a. Research pros and cons endlessly, then see if more information becomes available next month.

OR

b. Do something unrelated so you don't have to think about it for a while.

INTJ is option a for both. INTP is option b for both. If you don't like any of the options, or like one of each, or think this is a dumb way to tell, then I can't help you.

For the record, I adore INTJs, and I love being INTP, and I don't think one type is more successful or better than the other. The list thing and the methods of procrastination are just the behaviors that stand out as different.

I don't think I'd make a list at all for the first example.

As for the second, researching the pros and cons seems like something I'd be more likely to do.
