I have just started to notice how weird my house-cleaning habits are. I will not write a paragraph concerning this, so bear with me through point form notes.

1. My room is filled with junk.
2. When the junk gets in my way, I toss it to another corner of my room.
3. Repeat 2. x million
4. One day, I get extremely annoyed with the mess I've created and experiences a boost of energy to sort everything out to their proper place.
5. A week later, my room is in a total mess like before I cleaned it.

... Does anybody experience this? Note: Feel free to add comments, ideas, experiences, etc.

Well, I experience the same thing I guess. After I use something I leave it where it is,and don't bother myself to put it back to its proper place. But I still know where my stuff is despite the mess in my room. Once my father organized my room *when I was away*, and after that I couldn't find any of my stuff.

Same, but this goes for my entire apartment and the boost of energy comes only once per month. I am deeply ashamed of myself, but not quite enough to clean.

It's like that with me too. In exactly the same way as you described. When a friend from another part of the country came visiting me for a weekend last year, I decided to stay at my mother's house instead of my dad's because my room at my dad's house was much messier. :P

I do the same thing. I'd like to say I keep the place clean since joining the Army, but since I recently moved out of the barracks and into an apartment, yeah, my apartment is a pile of junk I'm not currently using, swept to the side.

This, exactly.

Except I have too much stuff to completely tidy my room in a single day, so it never gets entirely tidied.
I have too much stuff.

Yes that’s it.

At some point I will eventually lose something important (or forget that my keys are still in my car). Grab two dust-bin liners and clean like creasy.

Yep, same here. My apartment looks like the set of Fight Club. My desk at work isn't much better. Strangely, I can find whatever I need with a minimum of searching.

It's hard to put thinks back where they should be when you forget about them they are there I just don't realize thus a messy room is the result.

I definitely do this. I've seen INTP descriptions that discuss it as well.

In my case, I suspect it's related to the haphazard way my mind works. I bounce from project to project and things cease to exist when I'm done with them. I'm only vaguely aware of them until they start getting in the way.

Sometimes I try to get into a routine of cleaning up after myself, but I don't think I've ever made it more than a week or two. Some new project always pops up that makes me forget and/or stop caring.

everything i think might be useful but probably isnt and everything that is certainly useless is in piles everywhere around my room... but piles i like. i think so fondly of the stuff i bring into my room. so it almost never bothers me.

what does bother me is things that happen throughout the day like leaving things on the ground and leaving doors and cabinets open... and if i don't fix those particular things before bed every day it bothers me so much i can't sleep.

Hmmm.... I really dont know.
That is the story of my life!!
Except for the fact that my burst of energy often only gets me to clean one area of my room. mostly because i have many other things that need doing (like how i should be studying) or because i actually let the mess sit for like a couples months and it gets so much that the burst of energy isnt enough for it all
lol!

I'm not sure, but it's rather chilly.
I've got the kind of organized mess which looks in complete disarray but in which I can find anything I need quickly.
I get that "burst of energy" every couple months.

One exception, however, is the kitchen. For whatever reason, I can live in as trashed a place as I want, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. But when the kitchen gets messy, I get depressed and feel like I'm living in a dump. So, the kitchen stays clean.

My room is always messy. But for the most part I know where things are that I use on a daily basis. Problems arise when someone tries to "clean" for me, someone moves something, or I dont use something consistently. In which case, it no longer exists in my field of vision and even if it is right in front of me it will take a while for me to find it. I suspect that I conceptualize my surroundings and when I look for something I am searching more in my mind than in the actual environment around me.

Another odd thing happened to me today. Yes, I will mention it on this thread although its' relevancy is below 60%. Here goes: My friend brought a book to English class called "Angels in the ER", so I became curious with it and decided to take a peek at it. On the first page, there was a life/death "crisis" and I read it. I started to laugh uncontrollably, with no explanation why that first page was funny. Now, my friends think I am more than half insane. *sigh* Just thought I'd share that with all of you. :p

I once had the same problem, you see I was supposed to take an English exam and I was really nervous * because I usually don't study for English exams, but still get the highest marks, that day I thought what if I can't do it this time?". I was kinda scared, when the teacher handed me the paper I started laughing and I couldn't stop. My friend gave me some water that I couldn't drink, because I was laughing so hard. I also noticed that I sometimes smile when I am not supposed to smile. I smile a big smile sometimes when I really shouldn't I don't know why.

Do you have this habit that when something really serious is happening, and then you think about the situation or something funny pops into your head, and you try to cover that smile, but fail...

Hmmm... So it does occur to other people too. :slashnew: I would say it occurs to me quite often nowadays. While others are so emotional when it comes to funerals, I don't feel remorsefuly at all. It is also annoying when the teacher is explaining a hard concept to a quiet class, and I think of something funny and starts laughing.

Yeah, it makes you look insane. THAT smile is huge, it is just impossible to hide, and when you are supposed to smile you can't.

Well, INTPs are fully insane in the eyes of most 'normal' people anyway. You're just reaffirming what they already knew :p

My room is generally a mess. I started working on a project for my art class today and realized that the only thing I clean up every single day is my bed, which I must have perfectly made if I want to sit comfortably on it to do work. Everywhere else is like a tornado ran through the place. (Actually, not really. My junk tends to accumulate with other junk of the same kind. Books in one corner, clothes in another....)

Hell the only thing you have to worry when coming into my room are the stacks of books here and there. My room is also dimly lighted. It glows a dark red. Mostly because of my curtains. I like it that way. If you get on all fours and crawl around, you can pretend that you are in the grand canyon.

But I think it's starting to affect me. Well my eyes anyways. I spend so much time in there that when I come out the light hits me like a head on car crash.

This is not exactly the same, I know, but you remind me of the Seinfeld episode in which Kramer's apartment was bathed in red light from the Kenny Rogers Roasters sign.

Kramer as an INTP is a potentially disturbing image.

Edit: Am I in the minority as an INTP that rarely, if ever, loses things?

i have a problem with rearranging furniture, every couple of months i move everything in the house to a new spot, i think its because when i was younger i never stayed in one place for more than a year and now i have a constant need for change. One plus is that i have become freakishly strong from all the lifting...

I realize he wasn't an INTP, but imagine transferring some of his traits into an INTP...

I like to rearrange my furniture periodically. It feels new and different. I guess I like certain kinds of change. Unfortunately, the layout of my current place doesn't allow for much creativity with furniture arrangement.

I do all of the above. I'm just not bothered by clutter because I don't notice anything around me. I also refuse to clean things if there is no logical reason to do so. For example, I haven't made my bed in the morning since I was 10, and the only reason I did then is because my mom forced me. I honestly could never understand the point if you just get in it and mess it up at night again. Then a couple weeks ago my roommate made her bed at night, right before she got in! I was like whhhaaat is going on??? Please explain this to me!!! She said it feels good to get under blankets that are wrapped tightly under the mattress and it keeps the warmth in. I guess that makes sense, because I always wake up with my blankets on the floor. All my mom would have needed to do was explain a logical reason for making my bed, and I would have done it willingly.

I don't notice the mess until I can't find what I want. Then I just organize till I find it.

People who are busy cleaning everything all the time (my mother) make me really nervous. I just don't like it when all of my stuff is moved around.

But yes, for the rest, I don't think I have much to add to this thread. Everything said here pretty much applies to me too.

I experience similarities in cleaning habits. It's like hot and cold, there will be one day when I just have all the energy in the world to clean. I mean I guess it gets pretty bad though because I have a table near when I first walk into the room so naturally I put my stuff on the table when I get home...then next thing I know I'm eating off the floor because there's too much stuff on the table and I just want to eat food and not have to worry about pushing the stuff off.

By the way...

Hello my name is Christina and I according to my personality...thingy I am an INTJ...hooray...

I do this as well. One day I will have out my pharm books and be studying and then I'll move on to getting out my paint set the next moment and then the next moment I have my guitar out. But because I never manage to 'complete' what I have been doing I never feel like I can put any of it away. It usually takes at least 10hours to clean my room alone and even then it is messy again within a fortnight.
I have been trying to be clean these last few days though just because I have finally acknowledged that a messy house discourages me from working and If I don't learn to be clean now then it will probably never happen.:twisteddevil: (< determination)

I can relate to the messiness described here. I use the "sort and pile" method of organization with piles of stuff becoming bins of stuff when the piles start to fall over. I have a room where these bins and piles go when i finally forget about them and they are in the way or start to "talk to me" and distract me from what I am thinking about or trying to figure out. Months or years later - "oh wow, I forgot about that" feeds my love of nostalgia :D .

As for the following:

I giggled when my grandmother died when I was fifteen :o ...

I think looking into MBTI has finally helped me understand (not solve, alas) a problem I have with death and dead things. I assume it is "external feeling" that makes me now look at the body as an inanimate object and I have had some pretty weird looks when I try to explain it. I just have no use for dead people. Similarly, it seems like "internal sensing" that creeps me out to a palpable level if I go to a funeral and look at the body. It will "haunt" me for days to months and I literally feel like it is in the room with me. I dont "do" funerals as a result and if i deign to attend, I won't go near the casket. Am I right, or do I need more information?

I must say it's also kinda' creepy when I get excited when I see large amounts of blood. ... e.g.- My mother cut her finger somehow and was bleeding over the sink. I saw it and got quite hyped up... ... ... But now I think that incident over, I wonder if I am excited because of the actual incident or the amount of blood on the sink... (Cause: Vampire genes?!? lol.)

Very much so. The urge to clean is usually precipitated by a strong/unwelcome emotion for me. However, after I finish cleaning I often notice I can't find important things then get miffed that I ever cleaned at all.

Does anyone else tend to talk to themselves? I know it's not really another person of course so it isn't like I'm delusional or hallucinating, but it's not like it's very easy to talk to anyone else some times. heh

When I was a kid our house got robbed while we were on vacation. The cops who responded took many more pictures of my room than anywhere else because they thought the thieves had ransacked my room more thoroughly. When we got back my parents informed them that it always looked like that :D

I used to have the pictures, I wonder what happened to them... probably lost in my house somewhere ;)
