ive noticed people talking about their "core values" in a sense that everything they spend time thinking about must not violate the principles of said values. i know that intp's value logic, so i would guess that most of these values will somehow be based around logic in some way. i want to know, or get you to think about, what your core values are.
my core value is "value vs probability". if i have a chance to bet a penny to win a dollar, i know not to do it if the probability of winning does not exceed 1%.

You should play poker.

I don't think I have any core values...if I have, I am not sure yet what they are. Could you tell me what you mean by core value? I value many things...I don't think I can narrow it down to one thing.

Let's say I had a core value, which controlled the way I thought... Or as you say, that my thoughts wouldn't violate the principles of my core value. Wouldn't that in itself contradict a value like "logic"? I mean, if I refuse to accept different thoughts because my values tells me otherwise, wouldn't I be biased?

when i say value vs probability, i dont necessarily mean that in a gambling sense. i like to take this view into random decision making as often as possible. example....
if i see a girl who i would rate at a 9 out of 10 that i figured i had a 50% shot of hooking up with, and i saw a girl who i would rate a 7 out of 10 with an 80% chance, i would persue the 7/10 because in the long run i would ultimately be better off.
i learned about this style of thinking through some book about game theory and it just seems to me to be a perfect philosophy. i have yet to find a situation that ideally contradicts this philosophy.

That makes more sense, lol. I saw this thinking "huh? INTPs don't usually have values..." (Fi being our weakest, unconscious function). I think you're talking more about worldview principles than you are about values, though.

I think if I could narrow down one driving principle that I go with in life, it is the principle of noncontradiction--although I would phrase it "The Truth is One." I tend to investigate systems of thought from within the system, acknowledging and respecting their premises until they come into contradiction. If they can't be resolved, then the system is false.

Tbh, it's probably not the most practical or efficient way to live, because you can accumulate a lot of false beliefs and waste a lot of unnecessary time thinking like this... but *shrugs*, what can I say? It's so ingrained into my thoughts that I don't think I could separate myself from it if I wanted to..

If you acknowledge that it's not necessarily practical or efficient, why do you use it? It seems like you already acknowledge that there are better systems out there; why not find them?

You're still young, and you're already saying things like 'I don't think I can change'. Honestly, one would think you were geriatric, or something! :p

Hmmm... I really don't quite understand what ANYONE else on this thread is trying to say  (don't worry--this is probably my fault).

These are my core values though:
Elegant Simplicity- this is hard for me to describe, but I guess it might be kind of like "value" (v. expenditure). I feel compelled to optimize the design of EVERYTHING. not to make it more effective, but to make it closer to perfect.

Logical consistency- things that don't "add up" bother me to no end. I need to be able to explain the ideas that drive and tie things together.
I could probably come up with more, but these are the most interesting

I think core values are very important to INTPs. They just don't always match what other people value, and they aren't based on authority or societal approval.

My set of values, which I spent a long time working out about 5 years ago, are, in no particular order:

Relationships:
Don't take anyone for granted.
Use good manners.
Respect others' prerogatives, personal space, and privacy.
Be loyal to those who deserve it.

General Behavior:
Act with honor/integrity.
Be courageous (don't let fear rule you).
Solve problems before they occur, and don't make the same mistake twice.
Take responsibility for your own actions, and don't take responsibility for others' actions.

I just joined this forum today. It seems pretty great.

Oh, I do have core values. Many.

While not exactly a value, I swore to myself I would never do drugs and would be reasonnable with alcohol. I don't bother others with that, but I value the integrity and reliability of my own brain. Couple that with the fact that I have a bad habit of abusing sweets and ice cream particularly... and basically anything that gives me lots of fun. With music for example... if I enjoy a tune a lot, I'm likely to listen to it in a loop for hours, then once or twice a day, until it becomes boring and I leave it alone for a year, then listen to it reasonnably. So it could be scary if I took a liking to drugs and alcohol...

I have lots of other values, too. Many were already mentionned, so I won't repeat.
But I will say this though, having no values could make one very destructive, both for themselves and the rest of society... not sure how this would translate through INTP individuals though. We would think very hard about world domination? Wait, I already think of that often...

I'll steal these two, since this is a good summary of my values.

Interesting...these sound more like rules, rather than values. So question - let's say these "values" are directed towards you, rather than others? How would you react?

As for myself, I'm fairly young, so I'm trying to figure mine out, and I'm not even sure if im INTP. But I guess mine are directed more towards relationships than anything else. I value authenticity and beauty in a romantic partner, because without attraction I feel no intimacy, regardless of how compatible we are. If a "friend" or someone starts talking to me like I am retarded, or significantly misunderstands me (ugh, happened many times) then I may never talk to that person again.

What I listed above seems rather Fi....maybe I'm INFP? Huh.

Random:
I won't swear. (It's a challenge most days.)

Relationships:
I try not to influence anyone, but let them do their own thing. If they ask, it's different. If they agree with me and do something I said, I try to make certain it's because they agree, not because they don't want to bother deciding for themselves. Noninterference basically. I don't give advice.

Extreme loyalty to the few I find worth it. I have a limit though. If more energy is expended on whoever than it's worth I forget they exist. Equal return for equal expenditure ideally.

Personally:

Honesty.

Logic.

Integrity/ cohesiveness of ideas and behavior:
I suck at this. I'd like whatever I say and do to be in line with one organized system of thought that I've constructed and accurately portrays me. The trouble is I'm a disorganized person and there are so many models that have at least one fragment that makes perfect sense applied to one circumstance but not to another and all of them are fascinating and seem to have equal merit. I haven't found truth yet, if it exists. I never will either, but C'est la vie. Maybe...:phear:

That's all I can remember. It may be different tomorrow but these are the most constant I've identified.
