Hum, I'd say he/ she sound like someone from a German-speaking or Scandinavian country. Could be totally wrong, though
What marks do/ did you get at school in foreign languages and/or your native language?
The fact that you
enjoy writing doesn't prove that you are good at it, it could just mean that you enjoy it more than some other things. I love maths and science, but I'm rubbish at them.
I'll take that test now.
I don't believe school marks represent your understanding of the subject. That's a general opinion, based on what we learn in the schools I've been.
My marks were poor, as my native language required me to read books in native language, which I have absolutely no interest in. When writing something, we had to use some quotes or something like that from what we've read, so that went bad as well. Another thing is that we had to explain why "marks" is "marks" and not "margs," which means that I had to learn rules, which seems pointless to me when I could simply write the words without knowing the rules.
As for the foreign language, English, I've learned nothing at school. When I could speak pretty well (as I can now), others couldn't make a sentence without at least 3 mistakes. I always made mistakes that day after having an English class. I used to get good marks in speakings (when the topic was right, as I was too lazy to research the other topics) and writings (same situation with topic). I got bad marks at grammar due to the required explanations, and for translations, as I didn't know the word in my native language when I knew it in English. Another case was "exact" phrases, expressions, of which some of them are real dumb. We had to learn around 20 exact expressions and then translate a sentence from our language by using those. I never liked using someone else's work, especially when it's as concrete as expressions (or not related to the topic - quotes). In fact, I find some of those expressions idiotic, and some not even used by anyone I chat with, and I have chatted with a lot of different people from UK/US/CA/AU over the years...
I usually got bad marks in other subjects too, due to my lack of motivation to learn the "concrete" things that I found no practical use for or simply wasn't interested in them. I always loved everything that required pure logic, while the rest of the class hated that. Mostly that was maths, chemistry and physics, however over here we mostly learn things that require reading some boring material and them remembering what you've read. I can't do that, usually my mind wonders on something interesting instead, and even if it doesn't, I can't keep my mouth shut and don't remember almost anything.
