How good is your memory?

I've been thinking lately. And I realized that I barely remember anything from more than 5 years ago. Like I remember all the big things that happened, but even then it's only bits and pieces. My short term memory seems fine, I never forget where I parked my car or anything. But my long term memory is horrible.

How much do you guys remember from your past?

Too good, can't share it though :/, then people think I had a specific intent to stalk them or something. It's my short term memory that sucks.

I seem to only be able to recall bad experiences. I admit my memory is none too good as well. I blame it all on poor diet and lack of sleep.

I haven't researched a correlation between poor diet and bad memory. But if there is one then that could very well explain my memory problems. I've eaten pretty much nothing but fast food and frozen, processed foods ever since I was 13. I've always had more than enough sleep though.

very poor memory of childhood, generally no vivid memories, ie i can hardly re-experience a process in multidimensional manner (emotion + experience). i have impressionistic snapshots, glimpses, with very limited understanding of their date or context.

i also grew up with poor nutrition.
now i eat fruit, rice, tubers, legumes, vegetables, medicinal doses of flaxseed or nuts.
no oil or flour, no wheat.

My memory is terrible. Quite often (read: all the time) someone will ask me to do something. I leave the room and *poof* everything they just told / asked of me is gone.

This really winds people up, but I secretly enjoy it. Having a shit memory is endlessly amusing.

My short term memory is excellent but my long term memory is questionable.

However, my ENTP brother's short term memory is shaky but his long term memory is outstanding. Better than anyone else I know. He recalls tiny facts from when he was 5 with impeccable accuracy but can't remember when I asked him to do something 5 minutes ago. Which only further convinces me that he's an aspie.

I have a very poor short-term memory. I may have lost some keys and be looking for them 30 minutes. After finding them, 80% of the time i lose them again instantly.
It is a feeling of moving mechanically without knowing what you do, there is some purpose deep inside but you are lost in other world, thinking about random shit. Sometimes i think i'll suffer multiple mental disorders when i get a bit older.
I just seem to remember shit that hurt me, besides that, when i hear certain songs or even parts of them i get fleeting images of places or situations and they make me feel sad yet confortable, warm, nostalgic.

That's less short-term memory than simply not encoding properly. You're boring to him ;)

STM only lasts about 20 seconds.

@TheManBeyond
Again, that's not STM. STM is more like your immediate attention span. If you're not remembering stuff after 30 minutes, it's because you're not paying attention in the first place, or you're not encoding it to your long term memory.

Used to be better, it's filling up. This is a proven fact by the way, we have limited space. I did too many things, this is why I recommend being careful what you fill your head with.

Pish-posh.

We have limited space which cannot be filled within a single lifetime (This is based on how much data you can absorb vs. how much potential storage you have).

I guarantee that you have plenty of space left in your brain.

This is me exactly. Whenever I think of something from my past I usually just get a little snapshot.

Well I know that the brain purposely forgets certain things to maintain efficiency. But I've also heard that a lot of memories are not forgotten, you've just lost the access point. Kind of like deleting a short cut on a computer, the file is still there, it's just harder to reach.

Shortest-term memory is not necessarily bad, but it is inconsistent. I'll go to the kitchen to eat and in the 15-20 seconds it takes me to get there I sit at the piano, start playing and then look up some sheet music on my laptop. 20 minutes later I realize my appetite is not satisfied. Bummer. In the shower, I often lose track of what I've already washed, and have to repeat the shower cycle.

Similarly to nanook and SilentStorm, memories from any further back than maybe six months or a year come up as 2-3 second snippets of film with little detail and without clear emotional or sentimental content. I can sometimes figure out from the experience itself what I must have been feeling (shame when telling a lie and being caught, enthusiasm when I had my first kiss, etc) but the memory itself seldom contains that info. Often I can't remember what order events took place in; when I reconstruct memories of eventful periods I'll end up with time paradoxes.

Everything I've read has been in line with Sergeant Pish-Posh here. Could you please link how this fact is proven?

You learn new stuff everyday, yet are still able to recollect information from the past up until the day you die. Providing of course you don't suffer an illness that affects the mind.

If your mind filled up completely, you wouldn't be able to react to anything because there would be nowhere to process it.

Sure you can forget things, but your memories can be reactivated through the right stimuli. That's why you can watch a film you think you haven't watched and then suddenly realize that you have.

i routinely withhold all kinds of inconsequential information so as to not appear Si-pedantic. i'm not sure if other people really have trouble remembering what year thing x happened or if simulating poor S is their only way to be N-cool. actually i am sure though. "oh was that, like, errh, that thing, or... like... nah nevermind [is surely up to something more profound that never shows]" truly disgusting behavior, and common. it's remarkable how quick a functioning cognitive apparatus coupled with odd personality can get you boxed in as "the stiff boring facts dude" in people's minds.

It's pretty good. I used to pride myself on having an above average memory but also wouldn't be surprised if it isn't as good nowadays due to a few years of weed smoke, if anything. On the other hand I've been exaggerating dates and would say something happened two weeks ago when it was actually three days ago. I've met a few people who do that. I've also met some people who say stuff like "my favorite year was 2008" or "man, 2011 was such a crazy year" but I can hardly off top recall events associated with years. Presumably I'd have to take a few moments, do some arithmetic and realize how old I was in said year and/or what grade I was in;etc. Emphases change. If someone gave me a ten digit code I probably wouldn't remember it in a few minutes unless I actively tried. But I do have a soft spot for certain moments while at the same time other things that happened within that time period weren't as cool so I don't randomly think of them although I'm sure they can still pop up if prompted. My memory could always be better.

I think my long term memory is actually good, I can somewhat remember weird stuff that happened during childhood.
