Hello, fellow intp peoples. And hello to non intp folks too. And hello to any intelligent chimpanzees, who may be lurking.

I'm basically an INTP to the core it seems, with my own take on the genre. Unique things for me are a really horrible working memory; I don't know which came first my lack of confidence or my lack of mental commitment. A lack of guidance and mentorship growing up has left me figuring out the world works relatively late in life. I'm still learning, but I have since tapered my aspirations to coincide with my worldly experience. I'll be a big fish in a small pond, knowing that I don't need a large pond in this age of convenience.

I come out as a 9 on the enneagram, which I think softens my intp edges. I enjoy people, but I'm not a people person if that makes any sense.

After 27 years of existence i've boiled down what defines me into basically three things.

Mathematics, after a long time I finally got a BS in Math a year ago. Math is an extremely fun place to play for me... it really grabbed hold of me around when I took Calculus in high school... and the more I learn the more fascinated I am. I've developed my own interpretation and algebra for a 3-D pascal's triangle. It didn't go anywhere... but it was fun while it lasted.

Music, I love music. I have to approach it from unconventional ways... since the standard approach to music is not for me. But i've plumbed the depths of musical understanding and have not drowned yet. I listen to lots of different genres from abrasive electronica to danceable polka. I like music so much I produce my own, which has been called video game-esque from critics and fans alike. I also like playing around with synthesizers and tweaking settings. I find it's like a puzzle where you create the pieces and fit it all together... trying to find the right way to make it all work.

Lastly I'm really into comedy. I'm find humor in nearly everything, I love it... Really the only emotion that I care about. I like comedy so much that I've done a bit of stand up at open mic nights. Which is probably a strange thing for an INTP.

Anyways that's me, if any of these topics interest you... why don't you PM me? Because I sure as hell won't be PMing you.

Hi

I long ago decided any current media dealing with news, life or history was so innately corrupt that I exclusively limit my viewing to comedy. Mainly from the Clinton era, which makes it rather repetitive... So I think comedy is an INTP thing.

Welcome

Hello and welcome!

I too am into music and multiple genres. And I share your love of comedy which is pretty much the only thing I watch or seek out in the media apart from music. So maybe it is an INTP thing. I also toyed with doing stand up in my 20s because sometimes with my friends I 'go off on one' and they fall about laughing, but I decided it was best to keep the rest of the world safe from me. I like Eddie Izzard who surely must be INTP!

There is a member here called earthdyedred who's only posted a couple of times but revealed this blog evidenceofautumn.blogspot.com which contains a wonderful take on music and what makes music interesting - go see!

Hallo. I like your spelling of the word, it reminds me of Enid Blyton.

Claverhouse, I don't get too much into politics or news or whathave you. The more I learn the more self serving and unplanned human organizations seem to be. I just notice the ridiculous of it and just assume that humanities fate is to destroy itself. I just be thankful that I'm born into a world that has electricity and is sanitary and is relatively painless... for the time being.

Noticing that it is all a big joke is a safe way of distancing myself from the whole thing, I don't have the strength of conviction or personality to change the whole thing.

I relate to the true comedians. Even if I don't agree with what they are saying, at least they are speaking the truth as they see it. It's like getting into another person's mind.

RubberDuckie, I do enjoy puzzle games. But I am a huge fan of the Professor Layton series. I also really like the Picross games.

Death, I do believe the late great Mitch Hedberg is an INTP... he seems so to me. Also Steven Wright seems INTP. They are two of my favorites.

It took a long time to get up the nerve to go on stage. The confidence in my material also took a long time. I'm so quite that it's hard to tell just how funny my jokes are. It seems that the ones who often get the most laughs are just parroting funny stories and characters they have heard on tv. The comedic spirt of thinking up new observations isn't always what drives funny in social situations.

Like everything you just have to get over that hump and push yourself on stage, and you soon learn that it isn't as strange as you thought... and what is a challenge is not what you expected. If you have a couple of clever observations or word play, you'll get laughs... it's just a matter of squeezing as much comedy out of it as possible. That's the tricky part.

Death, your signature quote is fantastic. Comedians are really philosophers who take a spin on the world's contradictions.

Snowqueen, thanks for that link. Interesting take on what makes good music. My criteria are a bit different than his, but I like that approach. I place a greater emphasize on melody, which seems to be absent in his list. I have a hard time getting into ambient/mood music or since the melody is often obscured or not even there. But his take on creativity and innovation is right on. I love music that's fun to listen to but has hidden complexity. Or music that has complexity that approaches noise, but you can tell that it's really more planned chaos.

I think it's hard for INTP folks to tell just how amusing others see them. I've done just as you, and made all my friends bust out laughing... but sometimes I don't even know what I said that got them laughing... and other times I just think that's what everyone does.

And thank you all for welcoming me... and I just love this animation... :elephant:

Welcome.

That's fucking sweet. I wouldn't say it is unusual for an INTP to be into stand up comedy at all, just ask these guys:
YouTube- Dan Mintz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ajB7luvjzg
YouTube- Mo Rocca - Hilary and Her Rack

I've actually considered doing some stand-up myself, or maybe writing sketches. I wish I could hear some of your material.

PS: Steven Wright is an INTJ (So are many others), not sure about Mitch... I'm watching him in an Interview right now, I think he might be INFP.

Wow, Dan Mintz... that's the first I've heard of him. We are like comedic twins or something... it's eerie. Material and delivery and everything...

This is some audio of me performing at an open mic. Compare for yourself.

Thanks for posting that - that was pretty good, actually! Fascinating actually - the stuff you are picking up on. My favourite bit where I did actually laugh out loud was the joke about suicide which was hilarious! But I could imagine non-INTPs finding that a little uncomfortable.

Needs a lot of work, but I think you got potential. I love the one liner style.

Mind if I give you some criticism?

I would say your overall act needs to be cleaned up a lot, not just the material itself but your delivery and familiarity with it. Try to reduce the amount of times you say "uhm", so you can run through each joke more smoothly.
Some of the smaller one liners I think could be better used as segues into other jokes, like the underwear joke for example.

The Love ballad porn music joke was my favorite. :king-twitter:

Edit: Oh yeah, the Suicide joke was awesome, maybe if you reworded it it would do better. Seriously, that joke should have got more laughs than it did.

Mitch Hedberg an INTP? Hmmm... I've never thought about that before! He's my favorite toooo. You're standup is kind of quirky.. I didn't think the suicide thing was that funny, but your observational humor about the underpants and whatnot was pretty good. Do you look down the whole time like Mitch? :D

Oh and welcome!

Thanks for the comments.

Adymus, yeah it's rough around the edges. Performing and speaking isn't really my forte, but it's something I'm working on. This performance is off a relatively cold start, I didn't run through my set at all that day...

Especially with some of the middle material, I really flubbed my lines. :o

To put some perspective on this, I've been up on stage about 5 or 6 times when this was recorded. So it's definitely a work in progress.

Also this was an open mic more for musicians/poets, so they weren't exactly prepared for dark suicide jokes. I'm actually happy with the crowd response, these were more normal joes... than the usual jaded comedian crowd at comedy open mics.

I don't think I look down, but I'm not animated at all. I just stand there at the mic and say what I got to say. I try to bring their expectations down with a 'creepy weirdo' intro and then build it back up with material I know will work. Mitch Hedberg is kind of a hero of mine, because of his great material and that he's such a non-stage type person...

I hate when I use a word multiple times, it's like my brain becomes a broken record.

My favorites are things and I think...

Now I'm curious as to why we'll use the same word over and over and over...

Welcome to the forum, and that's some great music you've got there. I make electronic music myself as well, but I don't have much to show.

Hallo yourself. Welcome.

I seriously think I'm going to like reading your posts. I like the way you put things. Mostly though, I'm a big fan of comedy and I've actually considered making a thread about whether an INTP could be a (good) standup comedian. I assumed the reaction would be a big fat "NO", given our introversion and how most don't "get" us, but hopefully I'm wrong.

I've always wondered what kind of material an INTP would use in standup, and more importantly, what kind of material would actually kill coming from an INTP. Is the world ready for our brand of humor? And do we even care? I could see an INTP comedian as the type who would enjoy doing it even when they're getting nothing but crickets. (or maybe that's INTJ?)

I know what kind of humour comes from and kills INTPs because I share an office with one and we spend most of the time clutching our stomachs laughing. It's either 'what is the worst and most cutting creative insult I can give you?' or seriously dark inappropriate stuff (makes that suicide joke look tame). Basically like sharing an office with Melkor, Noddy, Cog. IB and Fury. That's when we're not arguing hammer and tong, that is. People come into our office and then back out quickly. People only ever come to lunch with us once. I believe I have kept his marriage together because he channels all that stuff towards me!

He is also the most romantic and kindest person I know. When I am sad I make him tell me the story of how he asked his wife out because it is a classic 'princess quest'.

Stuff that really makes me laugh, isn't likely to make others laugh. I'm talking about the completely bust a gut type of stuff... it is far to surreal and bizarre. But I have a pretty wide sense of humor, so I can find a common ground with my sense of humor.

But I think an intp that can notice funny connections in everyday life can make others laugh. It has to be a common topic, with universal appeal... but I think an intp can over think the common things too...

I've found very few people who refuse to laugh at my 'new people' joke.

A little dash of cleverness goes a long way.

I think I'm not as dark as most INTP though, going by how you describe it snow. I can go to dark places, but it isn't where I keep my mind... and it's not what I find the funniest.

My cousin and I can get into some pretty hilarious routines. I tend to come up with strange associations, and he's quick to get a simple to the point joke out of it. I think he's an ISTP.

My Arby's gone wild bit was co-created by him. I came up with the initial premise when he was watching tv and I heard the commercials from the other room, I came in and said what are you watching "Arby's gone wild?"... and the rest of the bit went from there as we bounced funny ideas back and forth. From what I can tell, that is one of my stronger bits with most audiences... I don't think it's my best but if it works... I'll go with it.

A bunch of my INTJ friends seem to go in for really dark humor more than I do, dead baby jokes and what not.

Dead baby jokes? eeew that's not at all the same as what I meant! It's more about finding the bizarre angle like you did with the comedian/suicide joke. I like silly funny and awkward funny too. I love Eddie Izzard and The Mighty Boosh (Sed will get upset now)
