How did you find out that you were INTP, or other type?

I've enjoyed Psychology as a subject matter since I graduated from college in 1998. I have come out as an INTP consistently no matter which version of the assessment I am using.

How did you find out about this forum?

Dang, I don't remember. I was looking up something about INTPs. It may have been personalityjunkie.com. I've been lurking here and it seems like a lot of really smart people are here. I prefer to hang out where there are likely to be people smarter than me. Much better than the alternative.

Do you have a partner/lover?

Yes, I've been married to a terrific ISFJ for 8 years. Somehow we've made it work really well. Fuckin' miracle, looking at our types.

Do you have any kids?

I have two toddlers. It's insane.

Do you have any pets?

Nope. But I'm a cat person.

Hobbies/Interests (among others, of course):

Jiu-Jitsu; reading philosophy, theology, or fiction; smoking a pipe; fiddling with technology; figuring out how things work; eating chips and guacamole; being fairly liberal politically. Oh, and Radiohead.

Is Jiu-Jitsu quite enjoyable? I assume it's less injurious than the other martial arts since your opponent can yield before you crush something vital.

I'm still training jiu jitsu and am relatively uninjured most of the time, though something is always "sore". So to answer your question, now with 4 more years of experience to support my claim... Yes, it IS quite enjoyable and has changed my life in significant ways.

If you are referring to the relationship with my ISFJ spouse, then yes and quite well. I jus asked her today why it’s still working after 12 years and I agree with her answer: Each of us recognizes that we are difficult (as humans are), and allow for the nuances. And each of us has had our share of therapy, which has helped.

I should update my answers ha ha. My toddlers are legit kids now.

I’ve been thinking on your question for a few days and I appreciate you asking! First of all, I should say that after 6 years of training Jiu Jitsu, I’m still a blue belt, but this points to one of the most important things I’ve learned from my training. It’s the newfound tenacity and strength of will that may be my most valuable takeaway. Learning to “stand up, try again and display strength of heart,” as Rickson Gracie puts it. I have a horrible memory, and I don’t drill techniques enough to truly master them, so my progress is slow. But fortunately I found a school where both the hobbyist and the competitor is welcomed and encouraged.

Also, even with my slow progression, I also have experienced an increase in confidence that has spread to other areas of my life. I’ve never been a very confident person, so understand that I’m going from a 3/10 to a 6 or 7. I look people in the eye now and I no longer experience the intimidation once I’m with someone in person. I still deal with a good bit of social anxiety, especially leading up to a social event, but my interactions with people in general have improved.

There are some other obvious benefits, like knowing that I basically get in around 10-15 “fights” a week through live training, so if I’m ever involved in a physical altercation, I won’t be concerned about getting hurt and will be able to handle things with a higher level of competency than 90% of people out there. The end result of that is that I have probably reduced the chances of ever getting into a fight outside of my BJJ gym. And that’s the goal, of course (I’m just too old for that shit anyway). And I don’t train BJJ for weight loss, but it has certainly helped me maintain a mostly healthy weight range and cardiovascular health level.

I could keep writing more, but I’ll lastly add that along with the newfound confidence has come a newfound humility that naturally develops as I am surrounded by people who are more skilled at the art and from whom I learn an incredible amount every week. Many of these people are younger than me and even have been training for less time than me. I think a good BJJ school will cultivate humility in the people there (The contrast to that is a MMA gym where the meatheads train with something to prove. I have no interest in that... I want to train Jiu Jitsu for the rest of my life and getting my shoulder ripped apart by a 21-year-old who is trying to define his masculinity with violence isn’t the kind of humility lesson that keeps you in the game for decades).

Welcome again I guess Stopped doing martial arts now but I think it won't hurt to try another one in the future.
