I'm probably not the person to ask. I have an aversion to seeing well acted terror or embarassment, but have you tried Slither? Its comedy/horror and stars Nathan Fillion.

Alien 1, The Mist, The Thing, Prince of Darkness, In The Mouth of Madness and The Shining. Those are my fvaourite horror movies although they are well known and copied to death nowadays.

"Last House on the Left" is horrifying, but actually I don't recommend you go see it, it's that bad. I saw the original back in the 1970s. Apparently there is a more recent remake that is equally discouraging. It is about evil incarnate, all-powerful.

Alfred Hitchcock made some great horror/suspense movies. They are somewhat outdated when compared to some of the other titles available, but you might enjoy them. They're good movies.

I think Silence of the Lambs is the best of all of the different Hannibal Lecter movies, but most of them are good.

If you can deal with subtitles, "Let the Right One In" is a Swedish vampire movie. Absolutely terrifying and wonderful.

"The Orphanage" is also excellent. Guillermo del Toro, director of "Pan's Labyrinth" worked on it.

Movies can't scare me, but I like horror movies anyway because horror movie imagery appeals to me. But the two movies that have come the closest to scaring me, which still isn't very close at all, are Audition and The Thing (the 1982 remake by John Carpenter)

Other fantastic horror movies:
Videodrome
Candyman
Cube
Perfect Blue
Dawn of the Dead
Pulse
Suicide Club

The Ring
The Grudge
The Descent
Cloverfield
The Shining (original)
Donnie Darko (sort of horror/drama)
Some of the Nightmare of Elm Streets
Silence of the Lambs
Pan's Labyrinth (some horrific elements)

"Quarantine" was creepy if gory in spots.

Ooh, Rear Window is a great one, and The Birds scred me as a kid. Silence of the Lambs is one of my favorite movies, but that's already been mentioned. A new Nightmare on Elm Street is coming out rather soon, and that should be great. One of my favorite actors is starring in it... He plays Rorshach in Watchmen! The Exorcist, The Glass House, White Noise, Encounters of the 4th Kind? I'm not sure the last one is out on DVD yet, though. I went to see it with a couple of friends when it came out and we sat in my car in the parking lot for hours because none of us wanted to go home to an empty house (I'm afraid of the dark :o).

If you're looking for scares over violence and/or gore, you might want to start with classic horror. Monster movies. 30's - 50's. Or, skip right to the 60's and just do Psycho, The Haunting, The Innocents, and Night of the Living Dead. Many people say they think those films are scary and have little to no gore. As for post-60's, most people seem to hold The Changeling and The Omen in high regard. The Sentinel fits along those lines as well, but it's kinda goofy. Also, check out The Shining (1980), Don't Look Now, Alice Sweet Alice, The Wicker Man, The Lady in White, maybe Critters and The Gate (but they're also goofy), The Blob remake, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (also goofy), The Amityville Horror, Burnt Offerings, Ghost Story (1981, a little bit goofy), Christine, The Frighteners (goofiest movie you'll ever see in your life), The Sixth Sense, Stir of Echoes, The Others, The Mothman Prophecies.

That's the best place to start.
