I suggest I could put the coordinate here but then
I played Diplomacy once with classmates. They take my backstab personally and I am still unable to make up with them since (I made no efforts to actually ). But it get really hard to find people to play it, I think only NP people can play it without taking it personally. Talk about getting 7 of them...

How can nobody mentioned a game that I forgot the name! It is the game where you throw dice to get 100 points. However, the appeal of the game is that you can actually change the rule of the game as you played, according to rule which you can change. You win if you find a contradiction or somehow exploit the rule to get the winning condition. The name of the game is something started with N, and it is a Greek word means "rules".

Half-Life and Hitman series. Both are very atmospheric, HL is kind of geeky and Hitman is just perfect in the way that you can plan your missions to extreme detail and even challenge yourself with stuff like I will fire zero shots in the entire game, won't change disguise etc (ignore the terrible explosive film adaptation, Hitman is about stealth and blending in).

Oh, did I say Jesper Kyd is awesome?

There exists not a single game, but a whole array of games from one INTP publisher - Paradox Interactive - which are some of the best games I've ever played.

Here's a review for the second addon to the Europa Universalis game.
http://pc.ign.com/articles/881/881636p1.html

I usually get bored with games before even a single walkthrough, some strategy games I might play occasionally during a few months. This game had me entertained (completely) for 2 years. Although, modding did a lot to raise the interest.

Anyway, Europa Universalis (buy Complete) is the best strategy game I've ever played. Period. Too much depth for more shallow minds though.

I play a lot of animal crossing/viva pinata/harvest moon :o
Those games are so mindless and relaxing.

If I'm am erm... .feeling a little agressive though, Dead Space, Res Evil, or Left4Dead/ Dead Rising are all nice mindless self indulgence as well. Some days I just want to shoot things.
I am a huge Zelda fan. I love the original Fable. The second one.... mmm I need to play it more.

I really like word games like Scrabble though.

A lot of really good choices so far. As far as suggestions are concerned, I would say any game praised by the likes of RPG Codex, from Planescape: Torment to Dwarf Fortress to Jagged Alliance II to Gothic II.

While Dwarf Fortress and Paradox Games are getting a lot of publicity as of late, I'd like to bring the attention of the public to an obscure little gem, which I'd call one of the most highbrow fantasy games. It is highly unorthodox, being essentially a massive dialogue menu along the lines of Alter Ego, and exquisitely atmospheric with its setting focused on the interpretation of myth.

Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia article:
The player controls the seven-member clan ring leading the clan, providing leadership to the clan in all aspects of its life from rituals to diplomacy. The ring can make two macro-level decisions per each of the five seasons in the Gloranthan year. Random events are drawn from a pool of hundreds and are often influenced by previous decisions. In battle, the player determines the goals and preparations, and possibly chooses the actions of his nobles at pivotal moments.

To succeed, a player must balance the various needs of survival and prospering, as well as manage the problems presented by the setting or the clan individuals - a lack of food might be solvable by clearing more farmland, but when the forest responds by sending a talking fox to urge leaving the trees alone, a wrong choice could bring the clan hunters to war with their environment. Likewise, should a member of the clan act in a selfish and foolish manner, action needs to be taken to stabilize and defuse the situation, if necessary.

Ive had a particular liking for Battlefield 2142. Much of the fun comes from operating by yourself or by leading a small squad determined to sneak through, kill quickly, and create uncertainty.

Many people scoff at lone wolves (no pun intended), but the impact of a single soldier outside of the main battle can very well change the outcome of the entire fight. Even if you fail to complete your objective (Steal a vehicle, find a nice sniping spot, destroy assets), you can make an impact on the main battle by fighting for as long as possible. If 5 out of 32 enemies are needed to kill you, the other 31 guys on your team can hopefully focus on killing the 27 other enemies. Blah blah blah, ill stop now because I could write a book about 2142.

(maybe im not done)

You can also Command on BF2142, where you assume leadership over all the squads. However, often times squad leaders are incompetent and will not follow orders, then blame you for being a crappy commander. When you find a nice team though, its really fun to command :)
------

Supreme Commander is a great strategy game. I grew up playing Total Annihilation, and SupCom is the "spiritual" sequel to TA. I suggest playing vanilla SupCom, not the Forged Alliance expansion. If strategy and tactics are your thing, try this out.

------

Rise of Nations is fun as well, though it has the crappy rock-paper-scissors setup for units (A kills B. B kills C. C kills A.)

How is it possible that none of you have already brought up D&D?!?!
It's a game that rewards just about any N personality because of the amount of imagination and original thinking that is involved; but for the most part ones with higher thinking functions like INTP, INTJ, INFJ, and ENTP (ENFP and ENTJ deliberately left out, because they usually wouldn't be caught dead playing D&D anyway), because the game does require some analytical skill and the tolerance of bookeeping.

It's actually funny how me and my other INTP were talking about D&D and we were like
"Dude, I wish we lived back in the time when people played D&D for fun"
"...Yea dude, that actually would have been pretty sweet, even if it's nerdy as hell"

then we told our thoughts to our ENFP friend and his response.......

"Dude no you guys are fucking gay"

What? No Mechwarrior? Seriously?

Anything Sufficiently complex. my personal favorites are:
Mechwarrior 4
mechcommander 2 (especially multiplayer)
Age of empires 2
Starcraft
X-wing vs Tie Fighter
UFO: enemy unknown (x-com)
Civilizations 3 (haven't tried 4, Need to do that)
Team fortress 2
Risk
Kings quest and Loom were also really good (and free downloads too!)

Any multi-player strategy game is usually good. there's just something to be said about outhinking other players.

I've wanted to play D&D, but haven't found the people to play it with. More interested in GURPS right now though. It seems more flexible.

I don't do EVE because I know if I tried it, I'd be hooked. I can't afford the addiction.

Comp:
Medieval 2 Total war (gold edition); My favorite game ever.

Age of Empires 1 & 2 (i thought 3 was garbage honestly)
Sid meyers Alpha Centari
Star Wars empire at war

I've never liked RPG's they bore me.

Board:
Axis and Allies
Quoridor
Stratego
Risk
Cathedral

sort of in its' own category: the Pirates cards (the ones you make little ships out of) are really fun.

I play lots of strategy games, from RTS to Sins of a solar empire and turn based strategy like Civilisation 4, galactic civilisations and the latest MW games (I download mods for the TW campaigns. The mods are waaaaay better than the vanilla version.)

My favourite RTS series is Dawn of War. While both games have different mechanics, they are both very complex. There are many layers to Dawn of War, as you get better you understand more possibilities, tactics, strategies to use in your task to defeat you opponent. The Dawn Of War 1 8 player free for alls were epic. Especially when I played as an ultra mobile teleporting race called the eldars that could teleport and cloak their bases. You could hide in an enemy's base and then strike him all across the map which he didn't have the mobility to counter :D. The 10 races in the first Dawn Of war 1 have different strategies and tactics...

Although not a video game, a game INTPs absolutely DOMINATE is Mah Jong. Very popular poker style game in Asia. Basically you have 16 cards (tiles) (17 at the end) and you have to make 5 hands of 3 cards and 1 pair.

It's like the game is designed specifically to our strengths(seeing multiple solutions and outcomes really quickly, reading opponents, knowing what they are going to throw out, maintaining poker face, etc.)

The main thing is making the BEST combinations to complete your sets the first.

Just recently was given Sins of a Solar Empire and have been playing it recently. It's not bad in terms of gameplay and it can be done to rather massive scales which I like. Some things about it can be annoying as one solar system can have 50 planets if you want and the planets don't move in any orbit which disturbs my sense of cosmic reality but I'm getting over it. It's alright.

I have the game, me and some friends were trying to get a group together to play a few massive battles. the one problem I had with it though, was that all of the races are really similar in the way they function(yes, they all have unique abilities, but their unit trees are EXACTLY THE SAME), and so all you need to know is what looks like which and you know all you need to.

For this reason, I'm waiting for Starcraft 2

To add a few more games to the mix:

I do play Go, but not often as the only person who will play with me I regularly own(although he often beats me at chess so thats fair).

I like Boggle, or at least am fascinated by it, just because some people get vastly different words

I often play FPS' just to waste time although I get bored quickly as once you play it there's no more point

Block puzzles are always fun(but not really games)

All of the computer games I can think of have already been chosen, and I don't play many board games.

Dwarf Fortress was really cool, but I couldn't get into it. It took too long to get used to the individual letter commands

Broken Sword!
There's also the better/original (maybe) tpy eof that game, Monkey Island. While Broken Sword is good, it isn't half as witty or insane as MI! I still reference it occasionally XD MI3 is the best on in my opinion.
So, INTP games:

Monkey Island
Shogun Total War
Wesnoth (although a bit too cliche)
Neverwinter Nights (I'm not really sure why, but it strikes me as an INTP game)
Elder Scrolls (mentioned before, but damn they're fun)
Ace Attorney series (Problem solving, witty/odd plot, changes alot)
Layton (to some extent, I found the puzzles fun, but it got repetitive after a while)

Currently playing Aliens vs Predator on the 360,
There's nothing particularly clever about it, in fact it kinda feels like a blast form the past, however each race's play-style is so unique and so in-character it just stands up on gameplay alone. For example with the alien you've got to be sneaky and take full advantage of the environment around you; as the marine you're constantly seeking light and shooting the hell out of anything that moves; and as the predator you're really encouraged to toy with the humans and pick them off one by one.

It’s a tactics game, especially on the harder difficulties.

Haha, yes! I agree, monkey island 1 is a classic. I've completed MI1 and got about halfway through 2, I'm now playing MI3. One of the few games I actually lol at.

My other friend has been playing Neverwinter Nights, and I really wanna' play it. I've played baldurs gate though.

Morrowind! Yes!

Same, I always laugh at Murray in 3! he's brilliant (as are all the characters).
NWNs is one of the best games I've played (and I've played a fair few). If you are going to play it you may get addicted so make sure you don't have any meetings and such around the time you get it! BG was awesome :)

I'm both proud and sad to say that I enjoy playing Magic: The Gathering a great deal. I find it to be the perfect game that combines skill, luck, and strategy. No two games are the same either.

Yes, I play nerdy card games. :p

Your not the only one. It's been 3-4 years since I've played and overspent(money) with Magic The Gathering. My definite favorite part of "nerdy card games" is the construction of decks.

Got to love that game, unless you get no mana for the first four turns, then you know it's just messing with you.

"New" Euro-style strategy board games should be a favorite of INTPs given our ability to think broadly and process multiple potential outcomes. I find INTPs are typically the best at these games once they learn the ropes. Examples: Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, Agricola, Dominion, etc.

Well although I can`t speak for all INTPs, I like all different kinds of games.

On the one hand, SimCity, Civilization, those kinds of planning and micromanaging point and click games that give you all the time you want (or have) to lay out your plan/strategy and experiment with different apporaches (which is ironic as I don`t micromanage or organize anything in real life.)

Then on the other hand I like RPGs like The Elder Scrolls Games, the Dragon Age games, the Mass Effect games and the like.

Never been into MMORPGs, I like doing my own thing at my own pace.

Anyone here ever play the original Tropico on PC? Pretty fun little dictator sim.

Sigh, need to get a desktop rig ASAP so I can get back into PC gaming, I'm getting nostalgic over the slaughter POWs button in total war :D

When I played the Black & White sim, I had too much fun wapping my giant tiger avatar to meanify him + tossing my terrified followers into the brazier to fuel my God powers.

I guess we all have our vices.

Ooh remember seeing b&w in game shops when I was a kid but never played it, just wiki'd it and am gonna have to play it now.

Remember the best part about tropico was picking off all the villagers who hated me one by one then eliminating their families too, little did they know el presidente could read their puny little minds mwhahaha

Yeah, I can't say it was the greatest game ever, but at the time it was interesting since it seemed more dynamic than most. If you abuse your avatar, it becomes mean and violent and helps you destroy other god's countries. If you are kind to your avatar, then it usually offered more benign and positive benefits. And you could take either the 'good god' or 'nasty god' role in how you encouraged obedience among your followers and amassed your (un)holy power as you sought to expand your reach among the continent.

Remember the best part about tropico was picking off all the villagers who hated me one by one then eliminating their families too, little did they know el presidente could read their puny little minds mwhahaha

I have a lot of fun finishing the SWTOR storylines for each character class, since you can play them as Light Side, Dark Side, or somewhere in-between. For example, I did the Sith Inquisitor as entirely Light Side... I was the "kind, gentler" lawful neutral kind of Sith and earned the trust of my companions by treating them as responsible and faithful followers.

But I've played some real bad-ass Dark Side characters as well. I finished the Sith Marauder first, and it was just pretty awesome flushing out the Jedi Padawan by tormenting and destroying her friends and family one by one (which she could feel across the distance due to her Force senses) and then turning her Jedi master to the Dark Side by goading him to anger during our epic confrontation and STILL beating him. And then....

...I turned her to the Dark Side and made her my apprentice by actually convincing her the Jedi were liars and powerless in the universe, even her master who obviously couldn't even stick to the Jedi path since he turned to anger so easily, so all of his truths were also empty, the hypocrites... and I had her strike him down and kill him right then and there at my feet.

We were unstoppable!

yeahhhhhh......I don't do that kind of stuff in real life, but sometimes it's fun to be wicked in-game to see what happens.

I can't remember whether this was where most of the SWTOR convo was taking place. (At least, I mentioned it last time.)

I was getting close to finishing the sixth class of eight (and am way freaking above the min level -- Level 63 Jedi Sage still playing Voss, which is Level 46 scale and Coruscant still comes after before the end is reached... the game does scale you down at least) -- with just the Trooper and Smuggler to go [I have one of each up to about level 20].

Now they're releasing something new today as part of upcoming release / promotional: Start new character (any type), get stuff as you level and accomplish certain goals, and apparently based on the culmination of Light/Dark Side choices made by EVERYONE ON YOUR SERVER WITHIN A CERTAIN TIME PERIOD either a light or dark side companion will become available + the degree of light/dark will change the story outcomes for everyone.

IOW, overall balance of light/dark in the universe based on player choices will impact overall storylines and settings.

Characters started before today, of course, don't count as anything. It has to be a new toon.

But what I hate (and I hated it in WoW too) is mandatory teaming/warzoning/instancing in order to scale the achievement ladder. STOP FORCING ME TO TEAM WHEN I DON'T WANT TO TEAM. Basically, by not teaming, I can't get the achievements. I get it; they want more people to team and interact; but forcing players to do it is pathetic. Have an alternate tier just for teamers or PvP'ers or something; stop forcing regular players (esp soloists like me) to team just to play a release.

EDIT: As far my play. I think I'm taking a Jedi Sentinel and playing her total dark side. Screw you, devs.

I've liked different kinds of games over the years, for different reasons. Most memorable examples ahead:

Adventure games with well built worlds to explore (preferably large) and an intelligent story or just nice storytelling/gameplay. Includes a lot of stuff, platformers, FPS and RPGs, and even point and click scrollers. Multiplayer need not apply. No min-maxing, leveling or grinding garbage (I hate that micromanaging, forced competitive, unnecessarily complex shit). No twitching. No clichés (gives nasty look to fantasy RPGs).

Deus Ex
Legend of Zelda series
Metroid series

Chrono Trigger — Best old school RPG.
Baldur's Gate series — For that D&D RPG goodness.
Eternal Darkness — Lovecraftian horrors manipulating human history to bring about their eldritch apocalypse. What's not to like? Nice literary references and ingenious insanity system. And Best Villain Ever™. Of all the games this is the one that should have a sequel/prequel/remake (there's one stuck in development hell).
Transistor — Nice setting, artwork and combat system.
The Banner Saga — Too much on rails, but nice storytelling and mechanics.

Puzzle games, as long as they're not too predictable once you "get it" or too much about super-optimizing something, and more about clever or multiple possible solutions.

Portal — Spatial-physics puzzles and adorable evil AI? Yeah.
The Talos Principle — Moar spatial-physics puzzles and evil AI AND philosophy? Fuck Yeah.

Strategy games. Usually best with people, but being antisocial it's best to have a good single player campaign / good AI. Don't mind if they're turn-based or real time.

Risk — Best boardgame ever.
Starcraft — Loved this game so much I made my own campaign (it was terrible). Waited over a decade for the sequel.
Civilization series
Endless Legend — Another 4X, but with original fantasy/sci-fi setting and factions that play genuinely and radically different. Specially with the expansions. It's so good, if you like the genre.

World-building / Simulation games. These are dangerous time-sinks which I try hard to avoid for fear of passing their event horizons and never be able to escape.

The Sims series — Customize all the things! Disturbingly addictive for such pointless games.
Sim City series — I could listen to the soundtrack for endless hours while laying out plumbing and roads.

Action / Shooters only when there's high-polish or great gameplay. Otherwise idgaf.

Freespace 2 — Much tension. Very adrenaline. So plot-twist. Such giant lasers.
Perfect Dark — Rareware were godly on the N64. I've never liked any FPS since.

When I played the Black & White sim, I had too much fun wapping my giant tiger avatar to meanify him + tossing my terrified followers into the brazier to fuel my God powers.

I guess we all have our vices.

Ohhh Black & White! Game looked so much fun. I had a friend who had it (fucker always had all the newest games) but he was such a dick he never let us play, just let us watch him play. No wonder we dropped his ass.

I should definitely check the Tropico series and Planescape: Torment one day. But I'm trying to save up for VR...

Why hardly anyone mentions Grand Strategy Games. Games like Hearts of Iron III, Europa Universalis IV, Total War: Shogun 2 or Supreme Ruler offer deep simulation, challenge and creative problem solving of the world sandbox. You get to control all aspects of a nation, from its resources, through research, intelligence up to policies and diplomacy. These are by far my favourite single player time drains.

4X games often seem underwhelming to me, they are just so basic, one notable exception is the X series, particularly X3 Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude. It's a spin on the usual ideas of the genre with the introduction of real time control over ships and micromanagement of fleets, production facilities and trade.

Turn based strategies are a great choice, where else can you ponder every move for minutes without worry that your opponent outmaneuvers you on the battlefield or has better reflexes, there's no need for that in a strategy which should be fully dedicated to the thinking element. Games like Heroes III (Multiplayer for challenge), Master of Magic, UFO:Enemy Unknown, Fire Emblem Thracia 776, Final Fantasy Tactics are a good starting point.

There is no better city building game than Dwarf Fortress. Its emergent complexity, replay-value, freedom of design make it a stimulating sandbox like no other. I may be falling asleep suffering the repetitive monotony of Sim City or Cities Skylines, but this one will keep me involved much longer.

Board games and any tabletop rpg for meetings with your nerd friends:
Risk? Are we stuck in the 60's for no reason?

If you're interested in a pure clash of minds there's Twilight Struggle. Arguably revered as the best strategy board game out there. It gives each of two players control over the western and eastern influence spheres as you guide them through the tense nightmare that was the cold war era.

Eclipse is noteworthy, a 4x board strategy involving space exploration and empire building, the downside being how long it takes to setup and take turns.

Letters from Whitechapel, more casual competitive setting with one player assuming the role of the antagonist and the remaining 1-5 players hunting them down.

I would highly recommend The Stanley Parable. It leans more towards the payable story side of things but it is still highly entertaining and gives many branching plots.

Also Democracy 3 is pretty fun for a little while though to me the novelty wears off. It is a government simulator which is basically just a spreadsheet with graphics. There is also a liberal bias so take that for what it's worth.

Oh and you can get both pretty cheap with the current steam sale.

Well. I have not engaged with the world of electronic games much these past two years, but recent forays into it have introduced me to these two procrastinational constructs:

King of Dragon Pass

An oldish(1999) game, where you take control of a tribe in a fantasy world. Decisions made can haunt or help you ten years after, you can raid, trade and diplomate, sacrifice cattle to make other tribe's children grow beards, go on heroquests, much like 'Indian' visionquests, where the hero walks in the realm of the gods to help the tribe. The hero comes back, or dies, or kills members of the tribe to complete the quest. You can choose to have thralls or not, you can sacrifice the thralls as well.

You can become queen or king, or your clan can be slaughtered by ducks, Zebra riders or trolls. I've never played something like this, it gets quite difficult if you don't play on 'easy' and even then you have to immerse yourself to get somewhere.

Stellaris

Seems to be a newish construct, made by humans who made crusader kings. Basically, you generate a galaxy and play as a race within it. You can be bipedal koalas or foxes, Zoidberg-like beings, avian aliens or fungoid beings with heads like shrooms(and many more).

Have only played for a day, but seems enjoyable, with theocracies, direct democracies, quendoms, juntas etc.

Colonize, terraform, explore Star Trek style, have your navy do navy things and try to gain control of a galaxy.

Most importantly, it has a working LINUX version.

Europa Universalis is excellent. I don't like playing games that involve significant and/or sustained amounts of time to get the most out of though (EU has a steep learning curve...), as I tend to game in rare short bursts.

I've played a lot of board games with friends but Diplomacy is the one I'd say I've enjoyed the most (for similar reasons to the Mafia game we played on this forum) as a large part of getting good at it is manipulating social dynamics. I learnt back when I used to play it not to play with people I know, and I think if I took up mafia another time I'd do the same. :D

Personal favourites:

System Shock 2 -- I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned. This game frustrates me as I felt it had the potential to go degrees beyond what it accomplishes, but it is the best fps I've played despite that.
Silent Hill 2
Ico/ Shadow of the Colossus
Zelda: Link to the Past
Final Fantasy VI-IX/ Chrono Trigger
A lot of oldschool platformers (Megaman, Ninja Gaiden, Metroid, Castlevania...)

I like puzzle-games as they can be ideal for short 3-4 hr playthroughs. I've had my eye on Miegakure for a long time and look forward to it.

Pathologic and Silent Hill 2 strike me as being particularly intp-esque games. The former is not very well known but deserves more recognition. It's set in a removed eastern city with it's bizarre customs, that cause the player to feel very alienated and have difficulty understanding the characters' dialogue. The game can be played from 3 different characters who each share very different perspectives. The main goal of the game is to survive a week-long plague, however, if you delve deeper into it, you can find something bizarrely abstract and experimental.

Grand strategies by Paradox interactive are incredible. The amount of freedom really draws me to them.
I also like RPGs with very living and open worlds, such as the Mount&Blade series.
D&D is definitely a favourite because it grants all the freedom i desire in a game.
Total War has a decent campaign and quite enjoyable battles.
I'm good at strategy video games, but somehow I'm awful at chess

Also Kerbal Space Program is god-like and should be worshipped by the masses.
