Yes, it seems you can't judge gender by username here. We have a male cryptonia, a female Fernando...

Eh. Why is there no "gender" slot in the profile? It would make things a lot easier. There's probably a way to add one, but I can't do that. I'm just a moderator.

LoR?

Why?

I like the mystery. :D

Puts us all on the same uncertain ground. Nothing but minds and the endless realm of cyberspace.

(Feel free to post arguments to the contrary.)

Its fine as it is. If we want to apreciate people for their ideas prejudices are our enemy, then the less information we have beforehand the better. If you pay attention you will find out soon enough anyway.

thats the way i see it. if you're going to be an active member, you'll find out about it, and if you're not an active member, you don't really need to know, anyway.

Eh, I guess we don't really need that. I was mostly thinking of pronouns.

That's what I thought too. I hate when I am having to refer to someone as he/she and have to go read a bunch of posts to try and figure it out. I'm offensive enough without being unintentionally so.

(I'm a dude by the way :D)

As long as the realization is there that the non-gender neutral sounding usernames can be confusing I'm sure we'll be fine. I also like not having it there because it allows me to forget about the gender filter I put on when I listen to people. Its not on purpose, it just happens and I think its great that people are allowed to make arguments without automatically being on one side or the other based on something besides their opinion.

Ha, yeah the "Fernando" girl confused me, too. No offense to you, Fernando... just that Fernando is generally a masculine name to me.

Yes, she did that on purpose.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen her around here much recently. Maybe she's busy with school?

Just looking at the nature of the problem, it's immediately obvious that it is one of those things for which many solutions have been devised and none agreed upon.

?? I don't know what you are talking about. I'm usually here putting in my two cents every day. As for my username, it's a habit of mine since people usually condescend to girls on the internet before considering their thoughts. I prefer people to become acquainted with my thoughts and then find out my gender.

My brain is genderless. Even silly online tests back up my claim :p
My speech, being mostly rational, should be -I think- considered genderless. Not my fault it's assumed to be masculine.
No gender disclosure, please. We don't need prejudice over here.

I make jokes about it (I hope you all understand the genetalia thing was a joke!) but I don't think there needs be disclosure either. It's easy enough to figure it out if we really need to.

I'm a "them" advocate. Have been for years even though the more grammar-nazi'ish people around me find it irritating. They also find it irritating that I revert words back to their original definition, like integrity, rather than accept their modern common usage.

We, Kidege...
I mean, yeah, I like the "them".
There's books that go one paragraph "he", one paragraph "she". Now that's confusing.

I'm averse to a gender marker. I obviously make no secret of my own gender, but that's mainly because I want to be probed about it by INTPs. Normally I don't discuss it with straight people.

Yes, I use gender neutral pronouns. "Ze" and "hir" can be used so easily. In college I used them freely in papers, but I always made sure to put "(neutral pronoun)" after the first usage since it's still so rare.

He/she = ze
His/her = hir

I actually enjoy reading articles that do that. A whole book would be really annoying. It's not exactly the best way, but it warms my heart to know they're at least trying.

We shall maintain gender mystery!

And gender neutral pronouns are very welcome.

If "it" didn't have connotations of non-personhood, we wouldn't have this problem.

I doubt that any of these solutions will become widely accepted within the next few centuries, though.

I actually have high hopes for neutral pronouns in the coming decades, at least in intellectual circles.

(I've been planting seeds..)

I usually go for plural pronouns when possible, to avoid the whole "gender" mess. It's just easier. There's not really a "satisfactory" solution.

Where it would be too ambiguous to use "they", and the person is hypothetical, I just use "he". I don't use "he (I am not using 'she' because I hate women and consider them inferior to men)", however - I don't get what's wrong with using "he". If it's a real person whose gender I don't know, I use "he/she", or "they" if what I'm referring to isn't too ambiguous.

I agree with our blue faced friend, I am nuetral to the whole gender nutrality thing provided that any mistakes in guessing don't result in my pissing anyone off (I do this too much as it is). As for pictures of one's genitalia, that information goes beyond my natural INTP curiosity. There is something known as too much information.

"Hmmm... Are you female? Because if you are, then I'm available XD"

My response
"No I'm not...female I mean. Interesting replies indeed, having another guy asking me if I'm available caught me by surprise."

Evidently my mental/written voice sound female, WTF!
I know what you're thinking... I'm not. Still kind-of amusing though.
But honestly does anyone else here think I'm female?

I didn't think you were female but I've been in your shoes (sort of). I frequently conversed with a female on a political blog for some time when one time she directed a statement to me that said "us girls". I hadn't been trying to portray myself that way but I guess I was so gender nuetral (as opposed to acting like a stereotypical man) that she made that assumption. She was far more embarrased when I pointed out my gender than I was at being thought of as female all that time.

I had a woman ask me, quite seriously, to my face if I was gay. Now I will add that I was taking a Jazz dance class at the time (its a long story how I ended up there, but it involves being misled by another classes description and finding a last minute replacement), but still. Apparently if you enjoy dancing (which I do for the same reason I enjoy martial arts) and don't ogle the girls in the class at every opportunity, then you must be gay. I'm not suggesting that I felt insulted, but I had been trying to conjure the courage to ask her out and that took the wind out of my sails somethin' awful.

I would love to see how masculinity is defined in an INTP culture, assuming they don't throw the word out entirely.

You don't strike me as female at all! That's interesting. Whenever I read your posts I have Crocodile Dundee's voice in my head. :D

When I was in grade school they always said I looked like a girl so I just stopped wearing pants and it solved that problem. Now days no one confuses my gender or sexuality. People frequently ask me if I ever played football (American football that is), which in America is as masculine as it gets, which is funny because I have as much athletic ability as an epileptic school girl on crack (no offense to epileptic school girls intended).

The fact that she had to ask says that you were putting out a lot of straight vibes, but you were a well-mannered intellectual in a not-typically-straight jazz dance setting. And you were likely good at dancing, which further adds to the confusion. She was probably delighted that you weren't gay, but very embarrassed after needing to ask.

Le sigh.

i don't think i've ever been mistaken as a female, but i suppose its my arrogant, dickhead attitude that i often times have lol.

I would love to see how masculinity is defined in an INTP culture, assuming they don't throw the word out entirely.

that would be very interesting to me, too. i know as far as people that i admire and respect, its usually intelligent, independant people, whereas a lot of other people i know (men in particular) seem to idolize physical strength or toughness. they like athletes and rock stars, where i'm more inclined to admire people like Stephen Hawking or Friedrich Nietzsche.

but i don't know if i'd say thats what i look for in INTP masculinity, as i have equal respect for females (or anything in between) with those kind of traits. so, to be honest, i don't know how i would define masculinity in other INTP's or in anyone as an INTP.

Yes, there are a few other letters, the XX and the XY, to consider in this.

There are other numbers and letters to consider in the whole online gender nutrality mystery, namely that often the IQ of the XY goes down with the increase in letter (bra size) of the XX. The internet eliminates the effectiveness of the bra size letter thus causing an apearance of more intelegence.:D Just joking about the whole appearance of intellegence thing
I personally think that the number of shoes that a female owns also conversly correlates with a drop in intellegence. But this is only an observation an juat another justification for my not having more then 5 pairs of shoes.

Anyway my point is that pictures have a lot of effect on how one acts. Without sound or any of the other senses words are left. The objectiveness of the INTP's allow us to not only look at ourselves objectively but to look at our gender objectively as well.
