I'm currently perfecting my fishtail braid style. The key to making the braid look polished and lovely is to use thin pieces of hair when wrapping around from one side to the other. The thinner the hair pieces, the more "manicured" the braid looks. The most difficult aspect to this style of braiding is keeping consistency with using the same "weight" or amount of hair in each consecutive braid piece. Because my hair is in layers, I have the added difficulty of dealing with pieces tha are shorter than others.

This is a nice braid that can even be worn at some semiformal occasions. The braid has a simple romantic vibe when worn with traditional clothing.

Have you tried this braid? What is another braid that you like? Or do you absolutely hate braiding?

Honestly, the only time I endeavor to do anything hair-wise is when I wash them.
I guess there may be some evolutionary benefit to molding one's hair this way or that, but that sphere of humanity does not concern me.

In my fantasy world, barber is a redundant profession.

I learned the regular braiding by spending (what felt like) hours as a youngin braiding the ends of persian rugs (the ones with tassel-like things). French braiding I learned in high school maths class, someone spent the entire maths period braiding and rebraiding her hair. Fishtale I learned in an emergency room department as a gender-androgynous person was braiding their girlfriends hair. Waterfall braiding I learned from my scandinavian buddies. It comes down to practice.

There's a lot of nice styles you can do with just regular braiding, like if you braided a small amount of hair near your left ear, and then wrapped it around the other side of your head like a crown. It's harder to style if you make a thicker braid.

Braids in general are necessary for me because though I'm only 1/4 Native American, I somehow inherited 100% of the hair-genes.

I do fishtail braids regularly because they are easier than a regular braid, once you're used to it. Granted, a regular braid is quick, but you have to pay attention to make it look professional. The fishtail can be done completely absentmindedly, and you look like you've just performed magic.
